I believe there will be an announcemnt next week. in my opinion these decisions will be made:

Bennett signed by the Dragons for 3 years
Broncos to stick with Griffin with a two year extension (timed to end when Bennett's contract ends with the Dragons.

Didn't Griffin make a HUGE statement by sacking 3 players for the Warriors game with their season and his job in the balance and then come up with a win!!! Huge respect and good luck to the next Bronco that screws up if they ever do. Coaching at it's best! If every coach had those balls you'd see less crap on the front page of the papers and Carney and Ferguson might still be playing. BTW I still hate the Bronco's!

-100!

If he believes he has the abilities of a supercoach would he not want to offer his services? I can't see anywhere Mary has put his hand up and announced himself in anyway and infact stated he was quite happy to step aside for a coach of the calibre of Bennett. That being the case (potentially) then would it not make more sense that he stays on to learn from Bennett or in your wisdom would he learn more from ESL??? Right now he is getting real experience coaching in the NRL. One of your best Mr Positive
Yes, I think he'd learn more in the ESL heading a top level team for multiple seasons. You really need things spelled out for you don't you? Facts, figures, and literal quotations.. anything requiring any level of interpretation is too difficult.

His acceptance speech "I'm still mates with Steve, I didn't want it but if I didn't take it someone else would of", did not have a sense of authenticity about it.

"I would step aside if someone like Bennett came to the club" was said at a very sensitive time in negotiations. Make no mistake, he is gunning for the top job.

THEY were like father and son. Wayne Bennett, the super coach and Darren Lockyer, the Broncos champion, who together would win four premierships.

But if St George Illawarra are to lure Bennett back, they might just have Lockyer to thank. Bennett, who announced he would be quitting Newcastle at the end of this season, has informed Brisbane directors he is ready to come home. However, his second coming hinges on the Broncos board, who will convene this Tuesday in what shapes as one of the most significant meetings in the club’s 25-year history. And one of the directors is Lockyer.

He is one of five directors, the others being Tony Joseph, Dennis Watt, Katie Bickford and Jeff Harvie. Given Lockyer’s standing, his opinion could sway the board and make or break the push for Bennett. Dragons officials, who have been in discussions with Bennett over the past week, know that Lockyer is the final impediment to the Broncos winning the race for the 64-year-old’s signature. The Broncos icon is a huge admirer of Bennett but believes Griffin deserves every chance to deliver the club their first title since 2006.

It was only last year that Lockyer had this to say about Griffin: “I’ve said to a few people, including Paul White (Broncos chief executive), that Anthony is the right coach for the Broncos. “I have been coached by plenty of coaches and from my experience, ‘Hook’ is very good. “The coach has got what it takes. I’m confident he can make Brisbane a competitive powerhouse again.”

Currently holidaying in Fiji, Lockyer will not be present at Tuesday’s board meeting, which will be chaired by Watt. Broncos CEO Paul White, Griffin’s strongest ally, is not a board member but has reporting responsibilities and will back the coach to the hilt.
Despite suggestions Bennett has agreed to a new deal with the Dragons, he has informed his closest allies in Brisbane he is keen to return to the club he led to six premierships.

The onus now rests firmly with the Brisbane board. If they possess the gumption to terminate Griffin, possibly as early as this week, it will represent the final step in Bennett’s return. Griffin is contracted until the end of 2015, but the Broncos board must confront the sentiment the 47-year-old cannot deliver the glory years cultivated by Bennett.

The Broncos’ pursuit of Bennett was hatched in May, involving a number of trips to Newcastle. Brisbane great Gorden Tallis was unequivocal when asked where the master coach would be in 2015.

“Brisbane,” Tallis told Triple M. “I think he’s got St George on a hook, there is a job there if he wants it ... but he is waiting for Brisbane to make up their mind. “The roadblock is Paul White (Broncos CEO) and Anthony Griffin because he has one more year and KPIs (key performance indicators). I heard Wayne is going to make his decision within seven days. If he is going to do that you lean towards the Dragons, but I think it might be a bit longer than that.”

Just before quitting the Knights last week, Bennett said he had several options.
“I’m not without opportunities,” he said. “There are options out there, but if not I will bide my time and wait 12 months if I’m not happy with the options. I won’t speculate on preference.”

Yeah we know. You told us that joke weeks ago.

Would GT007 accuse us of not being true supporters if we have a meltdown? Hmmm

I'll buy you a Resches to cry in. Reading that he is happy to go back to the Bronco's and awaiting their board approval is disturbing as I've stated I'd prefer him as coach however not without reservation. If he doesn't sign I'm happy to have Mary on a 1yr deal as I don't really think you can give a rookie anymore than that or if longer on the proviso of meeting strict KPI

I find it disconcerting (to put it mildly), that support is seemingly building for Mary to be offered a permanent role as head coach, whether it be one, two or three years, if Bennett's return falls through. If our only option to missing out on the services of a 700+ games coach is that of a 6 game coach, the board is more incompetent than I realised (I already think they are woeful).

The head coaching position for any club in the NRL (the best league competition in the world) requires diligence, foresight and aggressive recruitment. Of course, there is so much more to coaching than training the squad. Other considerations include finances, administration, recruitment, sponsorships, marketing, merchandise, membership, man management. Mary does not have the experience to take on the role, period. Every coach must start somewhere? Sure, but try the ESL, not the Dragons 2015.

In the end, there's only one true measure for a coach (as it relates to on-field performance) - does that person have the capacity to:

(a) recruit the necessary players to win a title (without paying overs); and

(b) coach that team to a title.

In that respect, give me Bennett, Henry, Sheens, Smith over Mary any day.

The NRL is cut throat and we need to play to win, no merely to "fill" a coaching role and make the top 8.

We need to play to win. I wish Doust could get that through his head.

All true though Henry and Smith have never won a premiership. Both recent coaching records are below 50% wins. Sheens did win in 2005 but again his more recent club record is below 50% so I guess thats why we're hoping for Bennett though the latest rumour is indicating he'll go to Brisbane. If we don't sign Bennett there is probably no rush to sign anyone so we have time to see how Mary goes over the next 4-6 weeks

Wayne Bennett set to saddle up for Broncos job

By ROY MASTERS

July 21, 2014, midnight

Wayne Bennett called Lachlan Murdoch on Sunday, convincing the News Corporation boss he could turn around the struggling Broncos, paving the way for the master mentor to be announced as head coach of the Brisbane team as early as Monday.
The approval of Murdoch was all that was required for Bennett to return as coach of the Broncos in 2015 with the power to choose his own staff, after a series of secret meetings of the board of the Brisbane club.
The directors reached a near unanimous view that the appointment of the seven-time premiership-winning coach is necessary to restore team mojo in a city the Broncos once dominated.
Club directors met without the knowledge of chief executive Paul White, who is a strong supporter of the incumbent coach Anthony Griffin.
Bennett, after six years away from his family, is keen to return to Brisbane.
The move required the agreement of News Corp, which owns 67 per cent of the shares of the Broncos.
Chairman Dennis Watt had the responsibility of seeking the approval of Murdoch, a long-term supporter of the club but Bennett's phone call clinched the appointment.
The Broncos directors believe Bennett can restore the team culture, which they think has deteriorated since the 64-year-old left to coach St George Illawarra in 2009.
Three Broncos players were sacked from Saturday's match against the Warriors for a midweek, late-night drinking binge.
The Broncos defeated the Warriors by six points, ending a three-game losing streak.
The club directors believe Griffin, affectionately known as 'Hook', has been given all he has asked for during his three-year term yet the team finished eighth and 12th the past two seasons.
White almost snared Bennett in 2011 when he told the Dragons he was leaving.
Clandestine meetings in the carpark of a supermarket near Sydney Airport between Bennett and White almost reached agreement on a return to the club, where he was the foundation coach.
White gained the approval of News to pay Bennett $900,000, a 50 per cent increase on the $600,000 he was paid in his final year at the Broncos three years earlier.
White found another $50,000 to produce a $950,000 offer Bennett described as "disrespectful", although he disputes saying this.
Nor would White agree to all the players and staff Bennett sought to bring to the club.
Bennett also had concerns about club powerbrokers he could not trust and has a long-term antagonism towards News, which apparently dissipated over the weekend.
Now, his return is less about money and more about control and a return to his home town.
The existing coaching staff and White will be replaced by Bennett appointees in a recreation of the "Wayne's World" environment which produced six premierships.
It is anticipated Bennett will coach the Broncos for 2015, 2016 and maybe 2017; Kevin Walters, his assistant at Newcastle, would then take control, with Bennett moving to director of coaching. Ironically, Walters was sacked as Bennett's assistant in Brisbane a decade ago.
He is desperate to gain a top coaching post after being short-listed by Wests Tigers and the Cowboys only for the positions to go to Michael Potter and Paul Green, respectively.
It was speculated in Brisbane that Bennett would install his son-in-law, Ben Ikin, as club CEO although this was not raised with the board.
Bennett doesn't attend board meetings.
