Weidler reckons that Hayne is contemplating a switch to the NFL. He has my blessing if he seriously wants to give it a go.

f**king Weidler!

I love Hayne, and think he's the best rugby league player I've ever seen, but at 26, the chances of having an actual career in the NFL outside of being a punter...

Hayne is a midget for most positions in the. NFL, Dribbler is just making s**t up as usual! he is an absolute knob head

Hayne's got the size and athletic ability to play plenty of positions. Hayne's problem is that gridiron is a extremely complex game for anyone to learn who hasn't spent a lifetime playing it.

Who was the last player to play NFL in a non-special team position (kicker), who did not go through the US College System or play Canadian Football (essential the same sport) prior?

This.

Hayne would match up physically to the top NFL safeties and is possibly also suited to receiver and special teams. But it's far too late for him to ever learn enough to play in the NFL.

Why would hayne want to risk life employment in the NRL by going to NFL? There is no chance he will make it and by the time he would/could come back to the NRL he would be past his prime.

No, he's not actually. Outside the offensive / defensive line positions he sizes up well, and is bigger than many running backs, most wide receivers and defensive backs. It's the lack of background in the game that is the problem.

Lawrence Okoye was signed by the 49ers last year. He was a British record holder in discus and made the Olympic final in the event. Played Rugby in high school.
Still hasn't played an NFL game - he is only signed to the Niners' practice squad as a defensive tackle.

He is still only 22 though so he might have a bit of time...but the chances are slim.

Nah.
He's taller than quite a few wide receivers, cornerbacks, running backs, safeties and tight ends. Wes Welker is one of the best receivers in the game and he's only 5'9''.
Ray Rice (RB) 5'8''.
DeSean Jackson (RB) 5'10".
Steve Smith (WR) 5'9''.
Darren Sproles (RB) 5'6".

Hay's problem isn't his size or athleticism, but the fact he would have to learn a whole new game. At 26 it is probably too late.

Yeah, I'd imagine if a player ever was going to make it from outside the system it would be as a defensive blocker type.

Antonio Gates went to College, but was strictly a basketball player at that level, and is now a leading tight end.

For those interested in the sizes of NFL players, the graphs on the following link are informative:

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/10/nfl-heights-weights-tallest-fattest

Hayne is b/w 220-225lbs, and 6'2" or so. He's right on the trend line for a tallish wide receiver.

It doesn't say that the NRL are happy to have him play. In fact, the article states that the apparent signing (which is contradicted by the SMH) is risk coz the NRL may refuse to register his contract.

Back in the early 80s, the NSWRL were happy for a bloke who robbed my grandfather at knifepoint to play for Newtown on weekend release from prison.

If the NRL do register Packer's contract methinks Carney's lawyers may come calling
