Penalty Differentials

So the Roosters have received 9 penalties or more in 3 of their last 7 games. The silence in here from the conspiracy theorists is defending.

Can we bring back the stats showing how long since a team has received 8 penalties or more?

If anything it has proved the conspiracy theorists right.

As soon as the article came out the refs have been a lot more beneficial in our favour, it's shown how easily they're influenced.

7 of the 8 teams that have played so far this weekend have received 8 or more penalties.
And we still lost the count last night!l
Also there are only 3 teams who have received less penalties than us this year. 2 of them are still yet to play. Shows how far behind we were that started this thread in the first place.
It makes sense of course that the most dominant team, the one who has scored more points than any other team has just about received the fewest penalties.
And we are still the 7th most penalised team. Yep we are being looked after hahaha

Ever since that article came out, its like a switch was flicked in NRL referees' heads and we've got a fair run.

Coincidentally we have yet to lose a game since this article was released as well

Update to rd15

100 penalties conceded in 14 games.
Only 37 penalties conceded in their own half (8 vs Cowboys rd1)
20 penalties conceded inside their own 20 ( 4 vs Cowboys rd1)
59 penalties conceded in the oppositions half
32 of these inside the oppositions 25 metres
32% of all Roosters penalties conceded are inside the oppositions 25m.
15 penalties conceded inside our own 10m defending our line. That averages to 1 per game.
4 penalties in possession
For the record only 2 of the 7 penalties we gave away let night were in our own half. Guerra 26m out for holding down. Evans 5m out for "high shot".

Deliberate tactics lol
Thought I’d use the bye round to take another look into the Roosters alleged tactic of intentionally giving penalties away on our line in order to reset our defence. I did this a few years back on this same thread.

This is based on Penalties conceded by Roosters in 2019. The meters are from Roosters tryline.

72 penalties conceded in 11 games.

37 in opposition half

35 in own half

17 penalties conceded inside our own 10m defending our line at an average of 1.54 per game.

3 games where they gave away no penalties inside their 10m (Broncos, Dragons, Tigers)

3 games where they gave away 1 penalty inside their 10m (Souths, Manly, Sharks)

2 games where they gave away 2 penalties inside their 10m (Eels, Knights)

2 games where they gave away 3 penalties inside their 10m (Storm, Raiders)

1 game where they gave away 4 penalties inside their 10m (Broncos round 10)

Only twice have they conceded consecutive penalties within their own 10m (v Storm 3 pens between 16th and 17thminute) (v Broncos 2 pens between 3rd & 4th minute)

Breakdown of penalties by field position
0-25m – 23 penalties
25-50m – 12 penalties
50-75m – 16 penalties
75-100m – 21 penalties

Draw your own conclusions.

Worth noting a few of those penalties in our own quarter have been escorts, accidental offside etc.

5 x offside, 3 x escorts, 6 x slow peel/holding/lying in ruck, 1 x dangerous tackle, 1 x strip, 1 x professional foul

its not the number of penalties or the type.

But when they are given during the game.

the square up penalties once the game has gone will distort the facts

As I've said before, Nick needs to throw more birthday parties for refs. Or take them golfing. Or show them his paper bag collection.

Reading into those stats, it seems the Roosters need to sign more representative players before June 30.

We really are just a bunch of salt of the earth, down on their luck Aussie battlers aren't we...
People say there is no consistency in the nrl. Not when it comes to chooks receiving penalties. You could almost bet your house on it that we will be near the bottom year after year after year

I always laugh to myself when coaches get the hump about penalty counts going against them, and similar when fans blame the referees with conspiracies such as "(insert referee) hates us..".

It's like blaming the cops for getting speeding fines...

Refs make mistakes at times but not enough that makes a penalty count blatantly favourable to either team, nor on a consistent basis..

Rather than blame the refs, blame your club if they are inherently on the back-end of a penalty count / set restarts and ask what they are going to do to get better...

BTW - that's not directed at you.. just to those who consistently gripe about "consistency"...

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said with regards to conceding penalties. What mystifies me is how certain teams consistently receive less penalties than other teams. Something they have zero control over. They all play the same teams so you would think the law of averages would dictate that over a long period of time each team would more or less be equal.

So the Roosters get penalised for slowing the POTB more than any other club.
Interesting....

It's funny how clubs like Souths and the Storm conceed less penalties for slowing the POTB. Maybe the Roosters need a ref consultant to help them disguise it like the Storm and Rabbitohs do.

Teams conceding a great variety of penalties is something that makes sense. As some teams are more disciplined than others and this stat tells you how disciplined teams are (or how comfortable they are giving away new sets to get their defensive line set). Hard to argue with the frequency of calls against your side.

But for one team to be receiving nearly twice as many calls their way as another ... And be miles out infront of other team shows a clear bias toward that side. There's absolutely no way teams are nearly twice as bad with their discipline against Souths compared to Roosters..

At a glance of those numbers. It looks like mid to high 60s is about the average number of calls teams are getting. Souths have 50% more than that which is an insane discrepancy
