Those comments from Cleary sound very promising... he wants to get it over with quickly so he can concentrate on next year, keen to find out the coach etc. - why would he want to know who the coach is unless he is certain on staying. I would be stunned if he leaves.

Nathan Cleary aims to finalise his future at Penrith quickly - and calls on club to name their next coach
SEPTEMBER 14, 2018Nathan Cleary hopes to finalise his future at Penrith in the coming weeks, saying he doesn’t want talks to prolong over the summer.

Cleary had originally set a November 1 date to discuss his contract at the Panthers beyond the 2019 season.

But after bowing out of the competition against Cronulla on Friday night, the rising No. 7 says he wants to move promptly on his next deal.

“I don’t want it to drag out,” Cleary said.

“I’ll have a couple of good days with the boys and do reviews and after that I’ll get down to talks and sort it out as quickly as possible.

“With that comes all the speculation and there is a lot of rubbish.

“If we can get it done as quickly as possible, I’ll be happy with that.”

In an ideal world Cleary will wait for Penrith to confirm a head coach for 2019 before making a decision on his own future.

“That would be nice, but I can’t really rely on that,” he said. “I’ve just got to focus on what I want to do and go from there.”

The Panthers are yet to confirm the club’s stance on the coaching position moving forward but Cleary has one man in mind.

He says he is the player see today because of caretaker Cameron Ciraldo and he’d like to see him handed the head coaching job next season.

Cleary has worked closely with Ciraldo dating back to his under 20s days and believes he is the coach to take the Panthers to the next level.

“I think everyone respects him and really likes him as a coach,” he said.

“In the last three weeks we’ve shown a lot of improvement and it is a credit to him.

“I’ve always loved playing under Siro. He has kind of turned me into the player I am today.

“He has shown a lot of faith in me.

“He has also taught me a lot of things along the way and he has always backed my ability.

“He helped me through the 20s and over the last year or two while he has been in and around first grade.

“I’ve owe a lot of my achievements to him.”

Cleary enjoyed a stellar 2018 season, including a successful Origin debut with Brad Fittler’s triumphant NSW Blues.

All this success was temporarily forgotten on Friday as the Panthers No. 7 came to terms with his side’s thrilling one-point loss to Cronulla.

Cleary had a chance to kick a field goal to send the match into extra-time but failed to convert.

“We’ve worked all year to get in that position and to not get that field goal is pretty disappointing,” he said.

“I kind of feel like I’ve let the boys down but oh well.

“The boys came out a different team in that second half and it is an absolute pleasure to play in this team.

“To be able to do that shows a lot of character. I was very proud of that.

“It has been a massive year for me. There have been highs and lows. I’m definitely feeling the low now but I’ve taken a lot of valuable experiences out of the year and it kind of fires the hunger in the belly even more for next year.”

Sounds like he wants to stay. I for one welcome our 10 year multiple premiership winning halfback.

Hook leaving will help massively. The improvement in Nathan from when he got sacked was both impressive and f**king sad. How did that clown ever get a job here

After we played merge in Round 12. How many games did our pack win the forward battle?

That is key for me. Give the halves and backs space and time and we can use it. Won't matter the tactics otherwise

that's mostly true but allowing the halves to call a play as they see it is massive too. The kicking showed this

Trent hasn't been the same since his engagement ended. Something's missing from his life, that would be my guess.

One doesn't have to guess.Because when it's all said and done, whatever the hell happened,it really was between those two.But there is obviously some f**ckwit who thought "yea...lets make life shit for these two will we".

If Maloney already had a neck injury prior to getting more or less spear tackled last week, you could be fairly sure he was not in great condition last night...

He wasn't. As Whino alluded to he could barely walk last week after the match. I have no doubt his lack of performance V the sharks was injury related.
The neck was settling down enough for him prior to Luke's reckless tackle. I still can't believe we didn't get a penalty for it.

Unless the injury caused brain damage he has no excuse for his decision making

There is no doubt that playing injured affected him - throughout the season and also against the Sharks.

After we rested him and he was able to recover (at least somewhat) we saw much improved performances, such as against the Warriors.

He was so busted after the Warriors game he didn’t do the press conference and from all reports struggled to get out of bed the next day and couldn’t turn his head.

It takes a lot of mental energy to play through pain, in addition to the physical impairment of the injury itself. That only gets harder the longer the game wears on.

He should have been rested. Better chance of advancing with a fit 6 playing.

I've never seen player have so many excuses made for him. He's the worst defender in the comp who also gives away an ridiculous amount of penalties. He cost us the game plain and simple

What bullshit. There is no way he cost us the game. By that same logic, Cleary missing the field goal cost us the game, or Cleary failing to recover Holmes’ short kick off cost us the game. Those two things happened at a much more vital point in the contest. Oh yeah I also forgot about RCG’s knock on costing us the game, and Chricton’s knock coming out of our own end costing us the game, as well as Peachey’s high tackle costing us the game.

This is also silly. Rest your most experienced player who is a proven match winner in big games? Replace him with May who will crab sideways across the park? You are forgetting that we lost to the Knights last time we tried that.

We had to play him. A busted Maloney was still better than anything else we have.

Repeated brain dead penalties are different to mistakes. Cannonballs, actually making a tackle.....off the ball. He didn't allow us to get any momentum the whole first half

You said he couldn't get out of bed or move his head after the Warriors game. My response was due to this. I'll take May who was the 6 with Cleary last year over a broken down Maloney who can't contribute.
