Yep he started a season premiership favourites and still turned over 5 or 6 players that season. I mean we are on track to turnover less than griffin did every season he was in charge.

That premiership favourite talk was BS. We were never at that level then, Griffin was right when he said the team was way too young.

That's why it HAS to be juniors for us. The ones we want are more likely to stay. Just a matter of finding the right ones in the right positions.

It doesn’t have to be juniors. Look at the 2003 premiership team, it was 50/50 juniors & recruits. We did it before Gus, we can do it after Gus.

What do TAB odds have to do with anything?

If he managed the players as badly as you've said, why aren't all these players performing better at other clubs/coaches or performing better under Cleary? Simple fact is, the best most of them have played was under Griffin despite what they may have thought about him.
Because half went to the Titans and Moylan has been injured. Simple fact, he had a premiership window and wasted it.

Our 2017 team was awesome. It should have been top 4 week 3 of finals at minimum. Premiership though no way. Instead of improving on 2016 though. It went backwards.

Just as Hook scraping into the finals wasn't good enough then. If Ivan does the same this year that's not good enough either. Both rosters underachieved.

Look at who was missing for both 2016 and 17 finals... You need luck with injuries to go well

Well I did say "it is a question of degree", so we are in agreement with that. So far, besides Moylan, we have not missed one single player we have let go in the alleged "high turnover" a significant degree. Api, TMM, Segeyaro are all good players, but not great players and certainly not worth losing any sleep over.

Not everyone you miss has to be a superstar or even that good. Certain players fit a role or plug a gap. In isolation I don’t lose any sleep over them, but in terms of the squad we have missed players.

A few examples -

Peachey - Provided our backline with X factor. His form was has been bad at the titans but that doesn’t mean he would’ve played like that for us.

Rein - We let him go despite Wallace being broken and our back up options were poor.

Robert Jennings - at various points we lacked decent backline depth, we had to play guys like MWZ instead.

But you ignore my comments about the starting position. You can't be stable if you are starting with a poor spine. The Roosters will be on their third halfback in 4 years next year. Coupled with a new fullback and a new five eight the Roosters have turned over most of their spine in four years. Because of their status, they are able to sign proven performers like Tedesco and Keary whereas we get old stagers like Soward and Wallace and have also tried a few juniors. Meanwhile, we have at least been competitive as we have looked for a quality spine to take the club forward.

Obviously a spine is vitally important, but it’s not a great spine or bust. You need experienced players around a good spine when you find them. How is someone like Cleary supposed to lead an inexperienced team? He doesn’t have the skill set to do that.

You can't reduce turnover until you get something worth holding onto. Our red zone attacking stats over the last four years highlight this in dayglo orange. Whether Cleary is worth holding on to is open to debate. I think if we complement him with the right players he can succeed, albeit not as a star $1m halfback.

You seem to see everything as though it’s Black & White. They need to be a star otherwise get rid of them. Squads don’t work like that, there are many role players, many journeyman.

A major reason our red zone attacking stats are bad because we put everything in to a halfback who can’t create points. That’s on Phil Gould. It’s going to be much harder to find players to compliment Cleary because we gave him a $1 million contract.

That’s not what I said.

I said the premiership favourites talk was BS, not that we couldn’t have got better results.

We were capable of winning a premiership IMO. We were finishing in the top 8 the last 3 years. Better results than that takes us pretty close to a premiership. I don't think it was BS.

Sorry I should have been clearer. That was a reference to Cleary's supposed $1m contract. The juniors you can do for cheaper and longer. Like I said it's a matter of finding The right ones. Not sure we could afford the quality around Nathan to outright win a prem if buying externally. Maybe one or 2 players like a genuine x factor hooker.

There’s very few inexperienced teams that win premierships. I’ve looked at this before and the closest I could find was Manly in 2011 with Foran/Cherry Evans as their halves. But they had other experience in their team.

During the 2016-18 period we were pretty much the most inexperienced team in the comp every year, we weren’t winning a title.

Agree to disagree, that side was capable IMO.

Disagree. The 16,17 and even 18 squads were capable of much better results than we got. Same as our current squad.
Underachieving and high roster turnover since 2015 is about the only thing we have done consistently well.

2014 and 2016 should have been great seasons to build off. But we havent built toward anything and it looks like we aren't building toward anything anytime soon.

Average coaches incapable of working with our players and the high player turnover have really killed our development to be better.

Yep unfortunately it seems like the biggest errors Gus and the club have made were in the coaching department.

Bennett would've had us top 4 :(

Would he? Are Souths any better off than they were before he arrived? He inherited a good roster, but without the big stars they are now struggling. Why would we be better off with him? Look at the mess he left St George and Newcastle in. He was good in Brisbane because of the ‘unlimited’ funds he had, and he couldn’t destroy the development programs because they were too large and he had no input.
I would rather have what we have than let it be destroyed for instant one off success.

He would have no say in all that though as we have a committee now.

Not sure he left the dragons in a mess? They went from 5th to 9th the season after he left, not a massive collapse.

It would all depend on the role he was given at the panthers. You wouldn’t allow him too much power.
