Blake’s numbers are mostly better than Dean Whare this year.

98 runs for 9.33m per run, Whare 66 runs for 8m per run

4 line breaks to 3

22 tackle busts to 2 (that’s a ridiculous difference)

139 possessions to 115

Tackle efficiency is the same

Missed tackles also the same

Yeah but it’s fanstasy land to think the next guys along will just be better. Sometimes the devil you know..

Some were calling Naden better than Blake after a couple of games, that’s just ridiculous.
Might be fantasyland but better than the insanity of sticking with devils that are unlikely to improve the team results.

For clarity, Naden in the air is better than Blake.

Depends on which players we’re talking about, but if it’s Blake I think he does improve the team.

4th on the team in tackle busts, 3rd on the team on meters per run. 85% tackle efficiency.

Naden has a tackle efficiency of 70% so far, that’s really poor. Might point towards him not being a centre. Although a long way to go.

Naden: 2 tries in 3 games and a genuine option in the air for contesting kicks - to the point we're changing our kicking game (including drop-outs) to make use of him. And 3 wins from 3 games :p

Stats you've quoted don't provide evidence that Waqa improves the team - or that he's worth his upgraded deal. Certainly part of it is the style the team plays, but as a centre he doesn't set up his winger or provide a consistent option for contesting attacking kicks. We all love seeing him in the clear but he doesn't have the footwork to make his own space or the speed of the mark to make the most of a half-gap. Starts making him a solid performer rather than the gun centre we've been hoping he'd become.

I’m hoping given the emoji you’re just having a laugh bringing Naden back in to the discussion.

As for improving the team, yeah those stats do indicate that. Tackle busts are how you break the line, meters per run is how you get further down the field, and tackle efficiency is pretty obvious.

I don’t know what Blake’s upgraded deal is, so it’s hard to comment on that. There’s no info on dollars I could find. Unless you know something?

What IS he capable of coaching well? It's not like he has coached Top 4 defensive sides before. Griffin coached better defence than him.

I have said it before. I think we downgraded all Ivan had over hook was everyone didn't hate him and he has a son that is a decent player.

But the squad make up should be what he wants.. Skillful centres aren't part of that

Haha, this is up there for one of your more ridiculous posts. Pretty sure that tackle busts is not a measure of how you break the line. You know that's what the line breaks stat is for right? And Blake has 2 this year. No doubt he's big enough to bust a tackle (these can also be while running sideways) but the initial speed is not there to convert to a linebreak.

I get that you're a Waqa fan but you need to also have an objective view of his performances. You've mentioned that he had close to a breakout year last year. Maybe go back and look at the tries he scored, the majority were with no one in front of him. He seems to struggle to beat players (tries against Eels and Warriors are the only exceptions).

That's why I raised his lack of both footwork and speed off the mark. He needs more to his game to make regular contributions and improve the team than just being an athletic runner. Better hands when chasing high kicks would be a good start.
