News Coronavirus and NRL

Look things change, each day, week or month. So for now we do for NRL but behind closed doors.

Nothing will surprise me for things like, suspended the season for 2 weeks, games being postponed or cancelled, extending the season till mid October, November.

The first priority is obviously the health of players, officials, coaching staff.

There is a chance, someone will catch the disease, then the NRL will make a decision on where to go.

Financially can our game survive?

Possibly, but I'm no expert on how businesses can still be maintained in this situation.

There plenty of questions asked whether there's enough from the networks should the game be halted, what about sponsors, leagues clubs? Can clubs stay financial?

Interesting times ahead.

Like the 500 people thing. If that was to only be for 2 weeks then there would be no issue but the uncertainty is the problem atm.

No point shutting the NRL down now if in a week it becomes total lockdown. Better off to save that until then

No he didn't. That's just how you decided to interpret it because you want to be cool or edgy by downplaying this.

There is lockdowns and seasons suspended all over the world. It is not "doomsday crap" to suggest we will experience the same.

The problem for us is that this is only expected to get worse when winter hits. And no this isn't "doomsday crap", it is stated by the experts.

The only thing he said that is even close that I can see is that we will shutdown for a few weeks (most overseas if not indefinite seem to be 4-6 weeks), but if it gets worse over winter like they are suggesting then it could be months, and then worst case scenario is they call off the season. That is not "doomsday crap". It's a worst case scenario.

Lol, go back and read his posts, and then f**k off.

Oh yeah, where have the experts said we're all going to be inside until spring and we're all going to lose a loved one? Cause that's the shit wibble has been sprouting.

Yeah it's so 'cool' and 'edgy' to keep a calm head and not act like the whole world has to shutdown for 6 months.

This is the shit he was talking a few days ago:

We will be stuck inside for months. There will not be public things at all. You will be allowed to go to the shops and chemists, and that is about all.

Hopefully that is how we will live for the next few months. Because the alternative is the horror that is Italy (they too, were laughing at coronavirus and saying it was a hoax, and overblown, just 3 weeks ago. Two weeks ago they tried some soft social distancing measures. Last week, way too late, and you can only go out to get groceries or medicine). Then we will still have these awful lockdown conditions, but with the cold comfort of knowing the extra two weeks of freedom we bought ourselves came at the cost of thousands of people (and will extend the social distancing times at the end by more than this anyway).

This is another glimpse at the horror of Italy:

https://www.newsweek.com/young-unaf...d-you-now-stop-killing-people-opinion-1491797

But in the end, if we do stay isolated, South Korea has shown us that we will have a few months inside with our families, we'll be working from home, where possible, and after an unpleasant pandemic made about as bad as a nasty flu season thanks to social distancing, we should be out enjoying a pleasant spring (ready for another f***ing hot summer...).

Don't worry about footy, I say stock up on PS4/X Box games, and keep your Netflix going for autumn and winter. Maybe the NRL will be able to play a short season in spring.

Shutdown for a few weeks? Nope, he said we'd be 'stuck inside for months'! Only allowed to go to the shops and chemists! And if we don't it will be like Italy!

And then talks total bullshit because South Korea never went into lockdown like China or Italy. But don't worry, we'll be able to come outside in Spring!

If the death rate is 1% you'll probably lose a couple of people you know.

If it's 3% you'll probably lose a family member. Maybe one you love, maybe one you can't f**king stand.

Everything will get massive financial losses except for a few things but Vlandy saying that league could die is rubbish. Rugby League will always exist here.

Australia's amount doubled in 3 days. Italy's doubled in 4.

Iran in 7 days,

Well that graph uses different numbers of cases and different days. It starts when Italy's cases were already over 1,500.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/
When Italy was at 79, it took one day for cases to double to 157. After that it took 2 days to double to 323. Our growth has been much slower. Iran and South Korea had similar growth rates.

You can't just pick and choose data from whenever in the timeline. Otherwise you can go right back to the start and say 'look we went from 5 to 15 in 1 day, Australia's cases are tripling!'

to be fair he did say it would exist here. Just not in its current form.

Peter V'Landys does not seem to understand that there are very powerful forces in this country that would only be too pleased at the prospect of Rugby League dying.

By projecting vulnerability so early and so nakedly, it has now only emboldened those forces.

Furthermore, his pronouncements yesterday have now created a PR nightmare for the game, making it look greedy and insensitive to the wider impacts of this virus.

The bloke comes across as a coked-up Sydney spiv. I am sure he gets along famously with the prominent mediocre politicians in that city.

I wasn't suggesting that Australia was at Italian levels. But rather the rate is nothing to scoff at given that the rate of growth is comparable to a nation in locked down because of uncontrolled growth.

Italy had experienced doubling every 2 day end of Feb/early March which lead to the issue. This has slowed marginally since lock downs. Australia doubled in 3 days. No - it's not as severe as Italy was. But our cities aren't as populated.

Australia needs to act now to minimise the impact as much as possible.

Who are the powerful forces who want to see league dead ?

As mentioned before, the quote about wanting $200 mil compensation from the government was a joke reply from a tongue in cheek question from a journo..its just that ill informed people took to twitter not realising the context.

The NRL directly and indirectly employs 10k people. Having games cancelled stops these peoples income and that's why Vlandys wants the game to be included in the governments stimulus package.

Vlandy had a similar problem in horse racing when they got shut down by flu. He managed to get $215 million compensation from the government.

Despite his speech impediment ( not sure why this is an issue ?) I'd say he's the perfect person to be in charge.

PS Union ( who only have 18mil cash reserve ) has also gone to the government for help and I'm certain the AFL will too.

We also can't have it drag it long though. We will have huge unemployment and homelessness otherwise

Those figures are wildly incorrect.
The fatality rate is somewhere between 0.2% to 1%

The fact that the website you provided a link to has the following warning pretty much sums up its reliability.

We apologize for the temporary disservice that you may have experienced. For about 20 minutes, our site showed clearly incorrect data due to a malicious act. We have investigated the issue and we're now implementing protective measures to prevent this from happening again. The other day we got hit with a big DDoS attack. Now this. We'll continue with our daily efforts and we'll not give up

Well no, it takes information directly from government releases of information.

That attack, showed the Vatican to have over 850,000 deaths, that's the only misinformation that has been on there.

0.2% - 1% - where are you getting that tripe from - laughable.

Those figure of 0.2 to 1% are what the world health organizations are saying. Do a quick google search and you'll find plenty of articles. TIP make sure you set your Google search tools for 'last 24hours' for the latest info.

If you're getting your info off a site that's easily hacked it's about as reliable as Wikipedia - laughable
