My local squash comp has been suspended and I can assure you all the courts desperately need the weekly revenue as do the state and national squash governing bodies.
Your local squash comp isn't in the same position as the NRL to impose controls over its players, thus to be able to ensure safety from infection during the playing of games. For this to work, they are going to have to isolate players from their families. There is no other way.

If money was a issue then remove the travel and accommodation costs

Get rid of Broncos, Nth Qld, Titans, Warriors, Melbourne

And in their place promote Newtown, Norths, CC, Balmain and Illawarra
yes very possible , put all teams into isolation, play games in fan lockout, atleast all games will be on tv, getting revenue,

From the NSWRL

Further to yesterday’s email I advise NSWRL has met with medical authorities, government agencies and other sporting bodies and a media release from our CEO will be forthcoming tomorrow.

Currently all events involving more than 3 clubs and 500 people have been cancelled in alignment with the Government’s wishes. Effective immediately all clubs are to cease team training. Further advice on the resumption of training will be forwarded when containment of the pandemic virus meets Government and NSWRL’s expectations.

Please don’t make any decisions about your clubs participation in trials and competitions until after tomorrows media release.

Has anyone heard what NSWRL/QRL etc are doing?

Rugby Union has shutdown games and training nationwide until May. Several Sydney junior RL clubs have stopped training. I've seen some facebook posts from country RL groups cancelling training and trials in preparation for an imminent announcement from NSWRL, but no announcement yet.

Wow really? The big pandemic experts on here seem to think being optimistic is for fools and if you don't think we'll be locked down with everything shut until August you're an idiot.

I can see things like sports and public meeting places like pubs and restaurants being closed until sometime in May then reassessed, and opening back up again if the new cases curve starts flattening or going down like in South Korea. As of yesterday we were still without a confirmed case in the Riverina/MIA. For my town footy training may be off for a bit, the pub might shut and traffic flow might slow down for a while but everything else will go as normal.
In the last 4 days, coronavirus cases have doubled in Australia, the graph has gone skywards. [Source]. Will be interesting to see how this pans out now that the restrictions are in place.

And yes, the curve is flattening in some countries. Not just China. In each case there were early protective measures.

I prefer to call it cautious optimism. The panic stations approach from some isn't helping things imo.

It is still extremely low numbers. People are being sensible (not at the super markers) and we are way ahead of china and the like in terms of things being done relative to the numbers (at 300 China had taken no steps at all). Everything is going to be fine and within a week we will mainly be bored.

"The Italian government believed that they were acting decisively with their first local lockdowns at just 21 confirmed national cases, far lower than the current rates in Australia. Many of us are in contact with colleagues in Italy, Spain and France and they are begging us to learn from their mistakes."

The letter points out that on current growth rates Australia will have "750 (cases) on Friday, 1500 on Tuesday next week, 3000 next Saturday, 6000 on the April 1 and 12,000 by the April 4".

"This is less than three weeks from now and puts us in a worse position than Italy is currently in," the letter says.

"Experience from China and Italy has also shown us that social distancing changes implemented today will take two weeks to show an effect on the numbers of diagnosed new cases due to the lag between initial contact and development of severe disease."

This is from Dr Greg Kelly.

As with everything Coronavirus different reports.

NHL
https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-update-on-coronavirus-following-cdc-statement/c-316172116

4. Our objective will be that, in addition to continuing regular updates, we will be able to provide high-level guidance on the potential of opening a training camp period roughly 45 days into the 60-day period covered by the CDC's directive.

45 days from March 27 is May 10.
Most sports seem to be aiming for a mid May date of return

Using that same as a guide that would be round 9.
Playing this week. gives 7 weeks to make up
Get rid of the byes and you can still finish all the season this year.

So they have a target date - but as information comes in they adjust.

The NHL were against allowing players to return to their homes. But now are doing so.
The NBA had a target date, but have already revised that to be much later.

You can't just 'get rid of the byes' unless you are also banning representative football. If it is all about the money - the NRL won't cancel Origin.

You are severely underestimating the extent and severity of this issues. No sport has a set date to return, and most are offering times that the situation will be reassessed.

What we are seeing in the shops is a disgrace. Fuelled by the media and their fearmongering

Dr Greg Kelly is full of it.
Italy's numbers started almost doubling daily from about 122 and their deaths were as well. They went from 122 to 650 in 4 days. We have gone from 122 4 days ago to 298 (I bet we are doing more testing as well). Theirs was twice as bad.

More blow back for Vlandys

With $200 million taxpayers could fund 2000 more ventilators for hospitals - or provide generous support to the NRL ("Catastrophic", March 16). Apart from the huge amount of money sunk into three stadiums by the NSW government for the benefit of a number of football codes and the recent revelation of $12 million sports funding into a building not destined to be a sports centre at Penrith, there is another elephant in the room. The NRL football clubs are backed by wealthy, licensed clubs, which could foot the bill for subsidising a competition, and supported by management and the players, who are yet to tell us how much of their exorbitant annual salaries they intend to sacrifice. Penrith Panthers not only owns its mega local premises but also has assets in Newcastle and Port Stephens, licensed and with hundreds of poker machines. The players of some clubs earn more than $1 million a year. Australia wouldn’t be Australia without football? Peter V’landys must be joking. Australia wouldn’t be Australia without governments whose responsibility is for the health and wellbeing of its citizens. - Valerie Reynolds, Greenwich

So COVID-19 might signal the end of the NRL. As a vulnerable 82-year-old, I totally understand your worries and sympathise with the stress you must all be feeling. - Patricia Dunn, Gerringong

Is there no limit to the avarice of the football codes? They get billions of dollars of taxpayers' money for new stadiums, often built on public open space, while other forms of entertainment have to buy their own land and build their own facilities.

It is that. But it is also a sign how seriously the people are taking it. We didn't see stories of this in Italy 2 weeks ago (did we?).
People aren't doing unnecessary things I think people are staying at home if they have any cold symptoms. etc.
