We are in a completely different scenario to Europe though

probably only in the timeline unless we get ahead of what they did and when. Why wait for it to get worse then lock everything down? Do it sooner and avoid getting there. We are smaller and more geographically isolated so we should find it easier to contain this if we are proactive.

I think they should suspend it now for a couple of months & make it a 15 round regular season on resumption: 1 game vs each other team in the comp.

To be fair, the UK is apparently going to run with the 'Herd Immunity' strategy which essentially means allowing people to get it and allow the immune system to build defence. This will result in a lot of unnecessary deaths and it is one reason English Sport has effectively been canned.

It will be a shit storm in the UK.

They are renowned for doing what the AFL does but there is much to be gained if they can keep everyone virus-free. That's a big if of course.

Probably best, as much as I’ve been looking forward to it, to cancel the rep season and let nrl and SL run a shortened season from June - November. If in June we are still in lock down then reevaluate. At east everyone inc broadcasters know the plan then.
Cancel the rep season? Origin really is dead then.

IPL has an actual start date. There is a plenty that do

Depends how bad you think it will get. No way 1.6m people will get in NSW eventually the modelling will get back to a normal rate and things will proceed as normal.

The government must have some idea what number of cases is an acceptable amount and as such know what is needed to get there. Sharing that will get certainty and stop these idiots that panic buy
Are you deliberately being naive and stupid?

The IPL doesn't "have an actual start date".

They have postponed until April 15. That isn't an assurance in any way shape or form that the competition will resume then. It might - yes - but they don't know - NOBODY knows when it will.

The government does have an idea of what number of cases is an acceptable amount, hence the PM's presser on Sunday talking about flattening the curve. What isn't known are timelines. It's literally the same as "how long is a piece of string". Nobody - nobody at all has an answer as to when this ends.

They can’t go later in the year due to cricket. RL can go later that is the main difference
Any other year would have been OK but you've got the T20 World Cup starting mid-October. This would impact RL as well if the ANZ closure goes ahead. Surely it will be postponed otherwise we'll have little option but to play the GF in Brisbane.

I don’t see the closure happening but yeah moving to QLD is an option. Plenty of options I can’t see season getting reduced

This is a major economic correction.

We go back to being a park sport with a semi-pro league in each major city.

I guess the silver lining is fox can’t afford to let nrl die so it’s not likely they will pull this years funding. They will no doubt bend the nrl over on something to keep getting the tv grant but nrl will have to take it.

when you see eels FC lost $5mill and Sharks lost $3mill last year the last thing some clubs need is a shut down of revenue.

For many, this is a case of you don't know what you've got until you lose it. Some people don't attend games for various reasons, preferring to watch it on TV. But imagine if this is over sooner rather than later. Let say, mid-June. If that happens, we'll see some sellout crowds.

Most of us are aware the worst case scenarios, but it doesn't hurt to be a little optimistic. And this optimism is not totally without foundation.

There has been a big drop in coronavirus infections in China [Source]. In the USA, the NBA are saying mid-June restart to their comp as best case scenario [Source].
