Hate to flog a dead horse but this would not be still in the news had he of just been truthful once that photo came out. He would've got a slap on the wrist from the NRL and a few days maybe a weeks worth or media coverage and that would of been that.

NRL star Nathan Cleary has been fined $1,000 by NSW Police after he was filmed breaching social distancing rules by holding a party with five women on Anzac day.

Cleary was previously cleared of any wrongdoing but was fined by police on Wednesday after they received information he had also left his home for non-essential reasons on the same day.

The women aged in their late teens to early 20s had been fined $1,000 on April 30 for failing to comply with a Ministerial Direction, while Cleary was given a warning.

Images of the 22-year-old partying with the girls and filming TikTok dances went viral and attracted widespread criticism.

NRL star Nathan Cleary was caught breaking social distancing rules after pictures emerged of him surrounded by a group of young women last month

It comes after a source claimed Cleary was fined $30,000 fine and banned from two NRL games for lying about his whereabouts.

The Penrith Panthers star admitted his actions were 'irresponsible, selfish and pretty stupid' after he accepted his two-game ban on Tuesday.

Initially, Cleary had claimed he was at home practising self-isolation and the girls in the video were down the road drinking, so he let them wait for an Uber at his house.

He also claimed the girls were only at his house for ten minutes and lied about leaving his house to pick them up, the Daily Telegraph reported.
  • The NRL decided to come down hard on the 22-year-old with a source confirming there were two reasons for the large fine and suspension.

'Firstly, the activities were not in line with public protocols,' the NRL source reportedly said.

'But, secondly, he conspired to concoct a story about what he was doing.'

The NRL is furious the Penrith star was found lying to the Integrity Unit twice.

Cleary expressed his remorse over the scandal, saying he was 'obviously embarrassed' and not happy with what he had done.

'I just to want to apologise for my actions. My actions were irresponsible, selfish and pretty stupid, to be honest,' he told the club's website on Tuesday.

'I brought a lot of negative attention to not only myself, but my family, the club, the game as well, and that's what has hurt me the most.

'To move on from here I need to realise I can't change what has already happened, even though I wish I could. The reality is I can't.

'The one thing I can control are my actions moving forward.'

The NSW State of Origin halfback went on to quote 19th century theologian Tryon Edwards when promising to learn from the drama.

'Someone sent me a quote the other day that said, 'Good actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past',' he said.

'And that's what I'll be taking on board. It's a massive learning curve for me. I've learnt a lot about myself and I never want to go through this again.

'This could be the moment I can kick on, especially as a leader and as a person and become better. That's the positive I'm taking out of this, if there is any.'

Panthers Group boss Brian Fletcher conceded there had to be 'meaningful consequences' when players fell short of upholding standards of behaviour.

'To that end Panthers supports the sanctions proposed by the NRL in relation to Nathan Cleary and Tyrone May,' Fletcher said.

Cleary was caught trying to cover up the extent of the social distancing breach when a contradictory TikTok video was released on social media

'Both players have this morning expressed sincere remorse for their actions and confirmed to the club they will accept the proposed sanctions.'

The punishments finally end a two-week saga that began with photographs emerging of Cleary with friends at his house during the coronavirus lockdown.

He initially explained that the group of friends were over for a short time, before video emerged the next day of him dancing with the same group of friends.

Originally hit with a suspended one-game ban, Cleary and May, his roommate, were dealt a harsher penalty by the governing body.

The suspensions comes as a serious blow for Penrith, given Cleary had been in a rich vein of form as he helped Penrith to start the two-round season unbeaten.

Coach Ivan Cleary, father of Nathan, will now likely be forced to turn to rookie half Matt Burton to partner Jarome Luai when the competition resumes on May 28.

The NRL's decision to revert to a one-referee system is threatening to turn ugly with the referees' union taking the dispute to the Fair Work Commission.

Professional Rugby League Match Officials on Thursday claimed the league had no right to change the officiating model under the current enterprise agreement.

They have engaged the services of Harmers Workplace Lawyers with the hope of finding a resolution before the competition resumes on May 28, but won't rule out strike action.

Looking forward to Burton getting a couple of games whilst Cleary suspended, Also Yeo has been excellent in the first 2 games and if we make the top eight a State of Origin spot on the bench is not be yond him.

I would feel more comfortable if Cleary was playing, particularly given he is our number 1 goal kicker if nothing else. Shortened season, surely it is in our best interests to have our best 17 available even allowing for the reasons Cleary is unavailable for the next two games. Who is the likely candidate to take our shots at goal?

Players will need to get rested at some stage across the game. If you make the GF 22 weeks straight of footy is very hard

Warriors will run last better to be against them.

Plenty have kicked in games before. Any of these

Luai
Edwards
Burton
Api
Crichton

Luai played NSW Cup last year with Edwards. Edwards was GK so I assume he will kick

Its also possible Edwards (coming back from a lower leg injury) may not have had much time to practice since the return to training. Maybe his focus has just been getting his ankle right without other burdens.

I would have thought Luai or Korosiau might have been the backup kicker originally, before the shutdown, while Edwards was injured.
Maybe one of them still is. Should find out soon enough.

With the six to go again interpretation what will happen if a team is defending on their own line and leading by one or two points in the last say 5 minutes and deliberately give away a " six to go penalty." Surely common sense will prevail and the referee will award a " normal" penalty and allow the attacking team the right to have a kick at goal.
