Whilst it is a great effort for Lyon to have played 123 tests, it needs to be said that in the post-Warne era, there were several spinners during 2007-11 more talented than Lyon that unfortunately didn't get the support of Ponting and the selectors, and subsequently got tossed out like a used rubber the moment they faltered. Had Lyon debuted during 2007-10 during Ponting's captaincy, his international career would've gone the same way as Krezja/Doherty/Hauritz et al.

Lyon got lucky that he burst onto the scene once Ponting was out of the way (in terms of captaincy) and Clarke was captain during Lyon's debut. The way Clarke used Lyon in attacking situations left Ponting for dead. Lyon took the opportunity with both hands and was the spinner that got the extended run in the test XI

And I don't think it was even that hot compared to years gone by at the WACA when you'd see 36+ degree days on end render the pitch a broken mess by day 5 and it would stay lower than a snake's Johnson on day 5.....

None of those guys (Krezja/Doherty/Hauritz) were near as good as Lyon. His overspin makes he effective in Aussie conditions. Krezja bowled too wayward, Xavier darts & better suited to odi's. Hauritz was a smart gameplayer, but without skills of Lyon. You left off one guy who should've played more matches in O'Keefe

What happened to Nathan Hauritz still baffles me. He didn't do much wrong and was a decent batsman.

Getting axed for Xavier Doherty because KP had a weakness against left arm spin.

Then the selectors were too stubborn to go back on there mistake and had Smudge and Michael Beer as our spinners in that ashes series at home.

Hauritz never played again.
