Its a very weird consumerism position to think people are entitled to watch professional sport for free when we have to pay for pretty much everything else in life.
I get your point. But times are tough and people will cut out entertainment expenses first. It's important culturally to have shared experiences, especially now that everything has become so decentralised and online.

It's also in the NRL's best interest to keep some FTA. It's something of a free trial period to get new fans onboard. And the anti-siphoning list at least forces the hand of any rogue administration, to keep 'some' content on FTA and available to everyone. It does take away some competitive tension though, which is unfortunate.

As far as I can see, the NRL isn't a partner of his Media company - Atomic 212 - which is a good thing. Not just talking up a client they are working for
Does reveal he is a mad Bulldogs fan at the end though, so Rugby League by extension but nonetheless does talk a lot of sense.

3 billion over five years is 600 million pa
Im talking about this bit

'3 billion is more than the afl tv deal which is 580 million a year including contra.'

Where have you got that the tv component is $580mill inc contra from?
The only official figures from AFL are $642mill a year total cash and contra, and $571mill a year cash only in total.

How do you know Telstra is $62mill cash and contra?

hey if we want to set a bar against our competitor great, but at least try and set an accurate one,
not that we can as we dont know their breakdown!

Sport has cultural significance to Australia and the ability to freely access and watch certain sporting events is important for maintaining said culture.

If he's going to refuse to provide a source, just report his post. He's got to follow the same rules as the rest of us.

Good to hear someone talking up the potential for a big deal. Ratings are up massively, crowds are up massively, we’re expanding the number of teams (with more on the horizon), we’re opening up new markets and time slots for the game. I dont get caught up in all this competitive market stuff, the NRL is on f**king fire and that’s going to invite interest. Truth is other than those actually involved in negotiating none of us have any f**king idea who is actually interested.

Also whilst there is always so much focus on the AFL to me this represents a much bigger threat to union. They’re falling apart in this country and if the NRL really can secure a TV deal like is being suggested they’re in even more trouble. It kinda feels like we’re on the verge of seeing the NRL stomp out what’s left of union in this country (and the flow on effects that could have across the ditch). It will also strengthen our position in this country as it helps eliminate the right split (pretty much all my old union friends have league as their second code).

This article suggests supercars getting circa 100% increase on their broadcasting rights.

I think the NRL would take that on their deal ..

I’m not sure an Englishman would understand this … but for many in this country … sport and in particular supporting their football team is just as important to them as the air they breathe ( which is also free) … the right to have some outlet to watch these for free will hopefully long remain a part of Australian society …

Is the Australian culture he speaks of bludging and wanting stuff for free?
Didn’t you support the wa govt investing in the Perth nrl team ?

And back home hull council gifted hull kr their ground and the land around it for way below market value

thats a weird stretch to people expecting to be able to watch professional sport on tv for free or not lol
Those investments expect a return for the economy or community. And like I've said many times I'd rather see money going to youth suicide or homelessness than billion $ professional sports, but thats just my values base.

how long until he drops perth bears? i mean is already making counterfeit merchandise as per cave posts he made. doesnt even want the club to come out with official merch would rather take the cash out of their pocket and do his own stuff.

cutting all the bs, whats realistic figures that nrl will land on. this is for tv/broadcast, radio, online media, aus and also new zealand plus whatever they make from papua. what will be final accumulative figure yas reckon?
