He strained his hammy in the first half, brainiac.

Dude… it was only semi-serious. No need to make up excuses for him.
Outside the top 40 or so players, the rest of comp really aren’t that different, especially in any given game.
Smith may be on less dollars, that’s about his only benefit over Penisini, but then Samrani is on even less so that argument is reductive

Is that why a bunch of our players are playing worse this year?

Who is playing worse this year?

Over the last few weeks I would say everyone that has been consistently picked in first grade has improved even Hopgood has gotten better as the season has gone on..

The last few weeks is a small sample, so they should be judged across the entire season so far. But of the players who were at the club last year, these merkins have all played worse:

Brown
Hands
Hopgood
Lane
Matterson
Moses
Ofahengaue
Penisini

Now I'm not the one saying it's the coach's fault. But if you're claiming player form is the coach's responsibility then you have to accept that not every player has improved this year. Quite a few players have improved, and that's on them, not the coach. These are grown men ffs.

Actually, it's probably on a combination of both the player AND the Coaching staff.

The Coaching staff would likely identify an area of improvement and possibly help devise a program to improve it, but the player needs to be the one to implement any personal improvement.

And of course for our side which started the year with alot of inexperienced players, there will be natural improvement as they gain experience.

Brown was poor last year
Hands hasn't played first grade this year and isn't at the club
Hopgood since moved from the lock forward roll to front row is actually performing at his best post injury.
Lane again has been down in form since his injuries and the fact he is now retired.
Matterson again has been down in for for many of years and isn't at the club.
Moses not sure a SOO rep would be down in form.
Joe not at the club
Will has been poor for over a year and since coming back from his suspension has been good..

So players form is on the coach and the player hence why you see a few players not at the club anymore...

Ryles has been great change BA had his style and it got them to a GF with a small window. The new plan seems to be long term success.

He is worse this year:

He played the first two games and did f**k all:
Hopgood since moved from the lock forward roll to front row is actually performing at his best post injury.
No he was at his best in 2023 and has declined every year since. This year he has been worse than last year:
Lane again has been down in form since his injuries and the fact he is now retired.
I agree it's nothing to do with the coach, but the fact is he was worse this year:
Matterson again has been down in for for many of years and isn't at the club.
He has been in decline since 2022 but was still much better last year than this year:
Moses not sure a SOO rep would be down in form.
He is. His running game has declined, and he isn't engaging the line anywhere near as much. Obviously his goalkicking has fallen off a cliff:

Joe not at the club
Does that mean he wasn't playing worse?
Will has been poor for over a year and since coming back from his suspension has been good..
He played his best footy in 2023 and it's been all downhill since. Not the coach's fault, obviously, because his decline started before Ryles got here, but THAT'S MY f**kING POINT. It's not up to the coach to own the player's performance.
So players form is on the coach and the player hence why you see a few players not at the club anymore...
Because he couldn't improve them? Or because he knows their performances are their responsibility?
Ryles has been great change BA had his style and it got them to a GF with a small window. The new plan seems to be long term success.
Yeah I hope so. The difference in both cases will be due to pathways development. We were doing well in that area pre-Covid, which is why we were able to build a regular finals squad. That 2-3 year lack of funding really hurt our squad succession, and we are seeing the results of that now. But by 2023 we were clearly back on track and the oldest of those guys are 22 next year.

Stats mean jack shit only stat that matters come grand final day is the final score.

At the end of the day the players need to be big boys and do the work though if the work by the coach isn't of a top standard that won't make very good players.

It all comes down to standards coaching staff sets the standard and the players need to meet them.

So for BA, as an example, did he decide to drop his standards after 2022? How were his standards high enough to have a team in the GF after playing finals footy for four straight years, but then all of a sudden they aren’t high enough for the players to keep their top form?

You said it yourself, the players need to be big boys and do the work. The coach can only do so much.
