Rugby is a dead sport in Aus but the World Cup still shits on any league equivalent as an event.
Marching bands are a big successful event once a year in the main street of town but doesn't matter to ACDC .. they may even attend the event but it's not on anyone's play list.

Cause all they have is internationals and below that their club game is a basketcase in most nations

Not much nrl can do to develop internationals whilst England haven’t done much re France wales Scotland Ireland

He’s going to miss out on being an origin player which means being a star all the time whilst the World Cup will be quickly forgotten

My vibe is he'll probably come back, but ofc the money on offer in France and Japan etc is hard to beat too.

I don't disagree that Rugby in 2025 is an absolutely useless game esp in Aus, but it also absolutely has more money in it, more global presence etc than the NRL.

Boy, I've seen some wild takes, but comparing a legitimate World Cup to a hometown marching band is well and truly up there.

It's a dead sport here and it's not a patch on the NRL as a product, but that doesn't negate their world cup being a much bigger event than anything we've got at the moment

It's a metaphor mate, relax, nobody's gonna take away your precious kick and clap.
I might even watch some, just like the marching band.

Unions always has had better internationals than us

But with the pacific cup and png nrl side and hopefully nz2 it’s going to have big growth

Pacific cup rated it’s tits off last year

Some random game like png v Fiji outrated the last bledisloe cup game in Australia

It won’t happen in our lifetimes but leagues on a good pathway

Nrl salary cap needs to go up too but i can’t see anytime soon where we offer wingers over 1 million a season

Id be more worried if they took good halves. Wingers aren’t a big deal even Marky mark

But his short league career has been stunning

Really? I won't tbh. Genuinely a dead game, can't stand it anymore.

Actually I suppose if they have some shit tier teams in Canberra again I might go. Those are always the most fun, f**ken Namibia v Russia and whatnot

It’s no surprise he went back to union even temporarily he is like a twenty20 gun for hire.

The nicer way of saying it is NRL produces new stars ever year, and we know how to market them.

Most people in Australia couldn't name a current Wallabies player.
No joke there is a Wallabies player named Harry Potter

Basically any wallaby who goes to league becomes an asset to the aru

And he’s done nothing cause of injury

RU World cup goes for 6 weeks, but really only attracts the global eyeballs for 1-2 weeks... 4-5 weeks of blowout, training run or spanners v. hammers games before Kiwis, Saffers, Poms, and Frogs/Pumas/Other pacific/six nations team get into the real boring stuff.

RL World cup is getting to the stage where at least 4 teams can win it, and there are fewer meaningless games and blowouts.

Still, RU has the international spread and dollars... for now anyway.

NINE’S BID FOR ALL NINE GAMES
Channel 9 is poised to make an all-out multibillion-dollar bid to televise all nine games in an 18-team competition in the next NRL broadcast deal.
The plan is to cover three games each week on free-to-air television and the other six on Stan’s pay-per-view platform along with the finals series and State of Origin.
Nine is already heavily invested in rugby union, the Olympics, and recently purchased the Australian rights from Optus for the English Premier League.
The problem for the NRL is that Nine’s rugby league coverage is seen as an inferior product compared to Fox Sports.
DAZN, the new owners of Fox Sports, is about to launch its own bid to retain the rights.
Part of those negotiations will include a bid to cover State of Origin and the grand final in a simulcast with the free-to-air broadcaster.

Well at least there is competition for rights. Please do NOT go to Stan. At least with Kayo I get some other sports I like to watch as well. I don't mind the odd union game, but the rest of what is on stan is rubbish. They would really need to knock a price tag so high that Rugby League couldn't say no. Even then I reckon DAZN would match it. They need a loss leader and AFL ain't it.

$12m was all it could attract?

A lot of work still to be done on the international game.

.
The last 10 team RLWC in 2008 had only 18 games. For reference the last RLWC which had 16 teams played 31 games. It was foolish to drop down from 16 teams (teams like Wales are now missing out), but I digress.
