Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

In all honesty if they go, let them go... the NRL will be fine. And if they all end up playing for the Wallabies it'll just be another NRL club. Besides if shzt goes south with the Wallabies the league players will be blamed and shamed.

Again??!?

AFL was a day off school. I was living in the Hills district and a lot of those guys at school played rep AFL footy. At that time they had a knockout schools comp that lead you to play at around 9am on grand final day where you would get flogged by the best Vic team (This is the 80s). So once a week we would travel to another school and play them. We got within 3 games of getting to the big dance. So it was nice to get the day off school to play, but as a game I hated it.

Braith Anasta can’t be doing a great job as a player manager if he hasn’t already got Pezet or Lachy Ilias R360 deals. I mean, the blokes are deadset stars and Lachy is languishing in reserves when he could be playing for mega biscuits at R360.

Anasta can't do R360 deals. Cause he is not an accredited Union player agent. Unless he wants to let Clinton Schifcofske do all the deals and take some of that cash.

What is super important for the NRL is to get the tv rights deal done so that it brings a known certainty of what players could earn in the next cycle.

Hopefully they get it done before Christmas. If not before next season begins. A fair deal for the code.

Other players mooted to go have said they want 1.5 million pa

Get the feeling this is being used as a stalking horse to get existing clubs to pay more
Feels like when you get the tradie who just doesn’t want the job and gives you some outrageous quote on the remote chance you will say yes and make it too good to turn down.

Well if that's what Haas is asking for imagine what proper rugby players would want... this could get messy for the Rugby Fraternity

Away from the finances and everything don’t get how this concept works as a ‘magic round’ type event. 4 games of rugby union back to back, regardless of the standard, does not make for a fun day. I’m sure even the most ardent of Union fans would be bored shitless by half-time of the 2nd game.

Top level Rugby Union averages ball in play of ~35 mins per game. So for 4 games, you’re gonna have to sit for at least 6 hours (more likely 8 with half times and breaks between games) for 2 hours of ‘entertainment’, and even then, the majority of that 2 hours is that fat lads having a cuddle inbetween tackles. It’s a dreadful concept is this.

That’s before we even get into the whole ‘made up’ teams with no supporter base, every player in every team being a complete mercenary.
Zac Lomax and Ryan Papenhuyzen would be able to sell out Camp Nou and San Siro on their own

Payne Haas’ management has postponed a meeting with Rugby 360 bosses despite the rebel competition agreeing to a playing fee of at least $US2 million for the premiership winner.

Haas’ management wants to be certain that they are not in breach of NRL rules when they open negotiations with R360, and as a result, decided to postpone a meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to confidentiality, said Haas’ agent told R360 bosses that his client would not be entertaining offers unless they were north of $US2 million ($3 million).

It is suggested R360 bosses did not blink at the asking price and were still keen to talk with Haas.

If he defects to R360, it is understood that Haas would also have the option of changing his place of residence to a tax-free country.

The Broncos are willing to offer him north of $1 million to keep him in Brisbane, but the threat of R360 looms large.

Haas’ desire is to remain at the Broncos, but he has two children and also supports two of his brothers. He also wants to provide for his other six siblings.

The uncertainty of the competition’s finances remains a huge stumbling block.“

2 million usd tax free is serious coin

He would be the highest paid rugby player on the planet

After tax that would be five times what the broncos are offering him

I doubt Haas is leaving Brisbane to galavant around the world with the family responsibilities he has here.

Plus, why would R360 pay a player $3M who isn't a known athlete in any of the cities they propose having franchises in? The whole thing is incredibly unsustainable.

That’s exactly what’s happening - the player agents are having a field day with this, it’s just a bargaining chip to drive up NRL contract values.
And that’s exactly why the NRL should take decisive action to ensure players know if they leave our sport, they ain’t coming back for 3 years minimum.
We can’t allow a different sport to artificially drive up or influence contract values in the NRL, otherwise the lower clubs will get left even further behind.

We here doubt why anyone would be inspired to support these thrown together teams that represent nobody.
But just imagine how you're going to get support when the worlds Rugby community are against it...

I want this to happen so bad lol

Union can’t afford a few seasons of their internationals being devalued

Their clubs and national bodies need the money to cover their huge losses

If this impacts the word cup in Australia it would be seriously funny

would union fans care though if their better players aren't playing in internationals?

Agree. I know people might laugh but union has a bigger global profile than league. I know we are all speculating about R360 and what it means, but could the end game of the people behind it be to get the union establishment to come to the table so the R360 people get a piece of the global tv pie? I am sure they would much prefer soccer, but soccer is in another stratosphere to try and get a piece if that pie with FIFA wanting all the money for themselves.

Yep, looking more and more like the NRL could benefit from coexisting with this competition. It's shaping as a full blown war between union and R360 which can only benefit us. Surely there's potential to take on some of there players now that the Rugby World will have effectively banned them. Also, when Pappy , Munster, Haas and co start carving the competition up it's going to only increase the NRLs international profile, as it becomes obvious where all the best rugby players on the planet originate from.
