It would be wild if the same pundits that sit there and question how we can afford Dylan Brown and Kalyn Ponga in the same spine sat back and nodded and applauded at the Storm adding Kalyn Ponga to their spine.

Nothing would surprise me in the NRL, but geez the optics of that.

Paying Tino 1.5m a year (allegedly what he's fishing for) would be a big mistake imo - and fly completely in the face of what seems to be a shift in strategy towards spending more on our spine, not less. Love Tino but that idea has zero appeal to me.

We wont be going after a $1M+ prop and aside from Holbrook being our coach there is zero that would interest Tino coming to Newcastle. He wont get the money or success here so what else would he gain? Nada.

As for Ponga going to the Storm, well I can see the appeal for both them and him really. Will come down to whether he is willing to take less to go there and a negotiated release from his current deal here. Papi was on close to $1M down there so he may be willing to take a haircut to win footy games and possibly comps.

I am not certain Tino’s concern is the money TBH. He’d be north of a mill wherever he goes. Noone will pay more for him than the Titans. They are up the creek completely if he goes. He might have been banking the money until he saw his best way of getting out, knowing full well a stronger club means a haircut. I like Tino. He seems very fair and logical. He is also giving the Titans a chance to sort their backyard but time is running out.

The pack is severely missing mongrel and leadership, has since Barnett left. Would have beaten a lot more packs if Barny had a genuine sidekick during those years.

As it stands now one of the weakest packs in the comp .Finally appear to have a spine, now they need a platform. Big season for Jsaf, or the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Same journalist 1 year ago - Walking out on 750K doesnt quite deliver the same click rate
https://au.sports.yahoo.com/ryan-pa...pVmpLZEwYIuwABz4m8zItg_BRGpCnLF74xmvTJPF1_BAp

It was widely reported across media at the time. He took a long time to accept the revised Storm contract - decided to stay "because we are building something really special here"

https://7news.com.au/sport/rugby-le...-new-contract-with-melbourne-storm-c-16814565

The 26-year-old, whose existing contract expires at the end of next season, had been offered close to $750,000 per year to stick with the Storm until the end of 2028.

Given his run of injuries leading up to that contract offer anything over 750K would nothing short of ridiculous.

Its a crap shoot when it comes to the media and player contract $

Regardless of his value, my original point was it opens up $ and a roster spot for Kayln to go to a club in a window to win a title

Anyone familiar with Mickael Goudemand? Ex- Catalans and Leeds. Apparently on a train and trial contract with us.

Mobile. Has a great short pass. Probably NSW Cup level but could be valuable in short bursts as a bench forward. Looked solid in his days at Catalans.

Hopefully not the full amount

He was a terrible bit of business.

Him, Thompson and Carter Gordon at the GC have really shown just how far behind union is - Super Rugby isn't even NSW cup level.
I mean, it's an entirely different sport. It's not exactly unexpected that players would struggle.

Both use a similarly shaped ball. That's about it

Entirely different? Sure it has its nuances but its hardly chalk and cheese compared to RL. Plenty of success stories going both ways between the codes

Really only the RU props and hookers have an excuse to struggle given they are very specialised

Very, very different sports. Of course there are success stories. Hayne went ok in the NFL as well.

Hayne is 1 bloke who did it and its subjective whether it was a success or not given he played how many NFL regular season games?

Compare that to the very long list of athletes that have gone between RL and RU.

They aren't all that different for 90% of the athletes in both sports
