We're not personally insulted a person with Downs are we? It's used as a broad term.
The posters are using a term as a comeback not as something deliberately said with knowledge of the actual illness being suffered.
Living by this logic, people that use the word 'lame' can be added to this and as well those that use nice person, androtop, fairy and I'm sure I could find various sexist terms as well?
"I fully understand that depression is a serious mental health issue in Australian society and if anyone has been offended by this incident I am deeply apologetic."
That's funny, I don't remember saying it's ok.Firstly Ill state that its something Billy shouldnt have done and even he has acknowledged as much with his apology in regards to his actions.
But I want to clear something up about your stance, are you saying it is ok to use any derogative term or name as long as its not knowingly directed at someone who is suffering form said condition. Your stance on it being ok to call someone a androtop or a fairy as its only a comeback and not directed at them personally. Does that mean it is alright to use racist terms as long as they are used in a broad term and not directed at someone from that race?
Ignorance is not an excuse.
That's funny, I don't remember saying it's ok.
Might want to know things properly before shooting at the mouth, perhaps like Billy.
Depression is something most of us will never understand. I admit I am one of "us". To that end, I will continue to laugh and make jest until which point I am impacted by it. Anyone here like to get on the soap box and preach perfect? There sure are a lot of issues in life you will need to be perfect at.
Well your way of clearing it up is embarrassingly wrong. As i said i wanted to clear up your statement, because it looks like your trying to justify the use of terms like Victorians, geniuss, gay, fairy, androtop et al with the reasoning that it is being used in broad terms as a comeback without so its not that bad.
I said i was trying to clear it up to actually understand your stance.
Well your way of clearing it up is embarrassingly wrong.
Firstly, I personally hate those words used but because Perth Red, and others was attempting to compare apples with oranges I used it as reference.
Here's what I'll do, I'll give you a situation in which the above would actually be comparable.
Poster A has a learning disability, and Poster B taunts Poster A about said disability.
And I daresay the closest thing we have to that here, is Tim and his 'fat' taunts, in which provide to be incorrect anyway.
Do you honestly think what Slater did (using someone's mental illness as an intended jab) is the same?
Here you've gone, completely off tangent attempting to make me look the fool when if you'd read my posts correctly you'd know you're way off the mark.
You're exactly right. As I said in my original statement what Slater said was wrong.
But it is also wrong to just label someone a genius without any thought into who you may be offending. How do the people who use it know they aren't taunting someone who does suffer from some form of learning disability or knows someone who is suffering from a disability.
Both are offensive behaviour that shouldn't happen and ignorance of the facts or the personal meaning behind the insults is no excuse in my opinion. Nor should there be any justification of that kind of behaviour.
wheres newwies apology for the grapple / choke slam that started it all and has been lost within all this depression talk? paterson almost killed blair
You're exactly right.
As I said I hate those words used, and I'm sure if you put in a search you'll find me actually angered by such ignorant language.
I just think what Slater did was quite different because of the fact he knew that Cory had suffered from depression.
But obviously he's remorseful and really if Cory has forgave him it's done.
Slater is an absolutely disgusting human being, so this is no surprise.
When he's not stamping on players faces or running into fights punching players in the back or kicking them in the face as they try to score a try, he's taunting someone about a mental illness.
Absolute scum of the earth.
