We're not personally insulted a person with Downs are we? It's used as a broad term.
The posters are using a term as a comeback not as something deliberately said with knowledge of the actual illness being suffered.
Living by this logic, people that use the word 'lame' can be added to this and as well those that use nice person, androtop, fairy and I'm sure I could find various sexist terms as well?

Firstly I’ll state that it’s something Billy shouldn’t have done and even he has acknowledged as much with his apology in regards to his actions.
But I want to clear something up about your stance, are you saying it is ok to use any derogative term or name as long as it’s not knowingly directed at someone who is suffering form said condition. Your stance on it being ok to call someone a androtop or a fairy as it’s only a comeback and not directed at them personally. Does that mean it is alright to use racist terms as long as they are used in a “broad term” and not directed at someone from that race?
Ignorance is not an excuse.

"I fully understand that depression is a serious mental health issue in Australian society and if anyone has been offended by this incident I am deeply apologetic."

f**k me I hate this. People clearly HAVE been offended by the comment so make an unequivocal apology. IE: I am deeply apologetic for those people who have been offended by the comment.

I don't mean this as a go at Slater btw.Just never understand this 'if you were offended". So many apologies do it. It's almost a refusal to acknowledge responsibility.

That's funny, I don't remember saying it's ok.
Might want to know things properly before shooting at the mouth, perhaps like Billy.

Credit for issuing an apology, but still, he is a wanker and a merkin of the highest order.

I lol at this thread. People on here must be model citizens and have never ever said anything offensive to upset anyone to pertains to a certain issue they may have. I for one am not one of these upstanding citizens, what he said was possibly wrong (no-one on here knows what was said) however whats said on the field stays on the field

I'm a Storm fan and a Slater fan but happy to admit that Billy has let himself and the club down on this occasion. Making fun of someone with depression is neither acceptable or defendable. Poor form. I'm not going to be one of the people that tries to defend him just because they are a storm fan etc.

I do however find it very interesting that some people on here who are happy to call someone a nice person (homophobia) or a genius are so offended by whatever it is that billy said. Sledging someone on their depression is making light of a serious mental illness, but calling someone a 'genius' is also...er...making light of a serious mental illness. I suggest if you ask a disabled person they wouldn't fin calling an able minded and bodied person a genius humorous at all.

That is in no way meant to take away from what Billy did. I've admitted he was wrong. But interesting to see people on here who call others every name under the sun getting so offended by it.

As I said I wanted to clear up your statement, because it looks like your trying to justify the use of terms like Victorians, geniuss, gay, fairy, androtop et al with the reasoning that it is being used in broad terms as a comeback without being personally directed at a person so its as bad.
I said I was trying to clear it up to actually understand your stance, so please enlighten me is discrimination in ignorance ok?

Depression is something most of us will never understand. I admit I am one of "us". To that end, I will continue to laugh and make jest until which point I am impacted by it. Anyone here like to get on the soap box and preach perfect? There sure are a lot of issues in life you will need to be perfect at.

Well having a friend that has committed suicide and other friends including an ex partner attempt suicide, and had friends needing to be institutionalised because of depression, I feel qualified enough to say that if you're laughing at mental illness like you claim, you're as low, if not lower, than Slater, because you're internet post certainly isn't a subconscious, heat of the moment response, it is a calcuated point saying you laugh at depression. What a horrible person you are.

People saying they should harden up? How exactly do they fight something they can't control? I'm sure Cory's on some "harden the f**k up softcock" pills known as anti-depressants so he can handle what he's going through, unlike others who can't handle it and kill themselves. If anyone here at all is defending Billy Slater's comments, they (admittedly in some of these posts) have no idea what dealing with an individual with mental illess is like. Having recently had a partner of nearly 4 years with depression, I can assure you she wasn't being a softcock who couldn't handle things.

I wonder how people would be reacting if this was Johnny Mannah. Is it okay for him to be blasted for having lymphoma now? What about Anasta's mum having breast cancer? That been given the all clear yet? Worse yet, when a footballers wife miscarries. They're all just as bad as this.

Yeah sure, blast someone for being a fat merkin, say you rooted his girlfriend, give them hell about not being able to catch a cold and being a general f**kwit. Don't give people sh*t about their illnesses and things that they can't control. It isn't right.

I agree, If I were a genius, I would find the insinuation that I shared traits with Victorians, offensive.

Well your way of clearing it up is embarrassingly wrong.

Firstly, I personally hate those words used but because Perth Red, and others was attempting to compare apples with oranges I used it as reference.
Here's what I'll do, I'll give you a situation in which the above would actually be comparable.
Poster A has a learning disability, and Poster B taunts Poster A about said disability.
And I daresay the closest thing we have to that here, is Tim and his 'fat' taunts, in which provide to be incorrect anyway.
Do you honestly think what Slater did (using someone's mental illness as an intended jab) is the same?

Here you've gone, completely off tangent attempting to make me look the fool when if you'd read my posts correctly you'd know you're way off the mark.

Actually I just followed the tangent you went on seeing you brought things like androtop and fairly into your argument. Yes I did take it to the next level but you were the one who pulled the conversation in that direction.
As I said in my original statement what Slater said was wrong.
But it is also wrong to just label someone a genius without any thought into who you may be offending. How do the people who use it know they aren't taunting someone who does suffer from some form of learning disability or knows someone who is suffering from a disability.
Both are offensive behaviour that shouldn't happen and ignorance of the facts or the personal meaning behind the insults is no excuse in my opinion. Nor should there be any justification of that kind of behaviour.

You're exactly right.
As I said I hate those words used, and I'm sure if you put in a search you'll find me actually angered by such ignorant language.

I just think what Slater did was quite different because of the fact he knew that Cory had suffered from depression.
But obviously he's remorseful and really if Cory has forgave him it's done.

It was Melbourne that introduced that sh*t to the game, I don't think an apology of using the storms own methods against them will be forthcoming.

I'm glad that we both strongly agree that the use of such ignorant language is completely unacceptable.
I do hope that this whole unfortunate situation will allow Billy and others to learn from his mistake and make sure that the situation isn’t repeated either inside or outside of the game.

Why are we surprised? Slater's always been a cat...he probably said it then ran 15m to hide behind a prop...

Slater is an absolutely disgusting human being, so this is no surprise.

When he's not stamping on players faces or running into fights punching players in the back or kicking them in the face as they try to score a try, he's taunting someone about a mental illness.

Absolute scum of the earth.

couldnt agree more
