And in 1998 St George changed their name to St George Illawarra because they thought they would get more fans. 12 years later they're still averaging less than bottom of the table Sydney teams.

Newtown were the first RL club formed in Australia 1908.

Ipswich formed in 1986.

1908 (103 years of history) V 1986 (25 years of history)

One club more than 4 times older/more history than the other.

How blind/biased can you be and expect to be taken seriously ?

Speaking of being biased, you're being a bit selective with the facts. Newtown only adopted the nickname JETS in 1973.

So you can say that newtown used the name for 14% of it's life in the nswrl where as Ipswich used it for 100% of it's queensland cup life. And considering the NRL under the independent commission will no longer have nswrl/arl ownership, and since newtown have no reasonable grounds to think theyll be admitted to the comp after almost 30 years out, I don't think there is a legitimate reason for ipswich to be denied using their own name.

Unless if they change the record books and we only look back as far as 1998 when we talk about NRL records then the Newtown jets have every right to prevent anybody using their name. The ARL took over the running of the competition from the NSWRL, therefore same competition different name. The ARL and superleague merged creating the NRL, but they choose to keep all histories of the past competition and not start over. Therefore The Newtown Jets are apart of the history of the NRL, no other 'jets' club is.

I don't think a Jets team should be admitted to the NRL unless it has some link to the Newtown Jets.

Pick another name from a defunct non-NSWRL/NRL club, or from a club from another comp or code. OR, make up your own.

The Ipswich Hansons? The Hanson Xenophobes? The Ipswich Reds? Toowoomba Cyldesdales?

I still think that Diehards is a great name in the Defiant, Dreadnaught tradition and is ripe for re-use.

Happy to apologise, I had no idea. The point I was making stands.

Why don't they just merge.. Everyone seems to be obsessed with bring back old Sydney teams that don't add a thing to the competition these days.

Haha! f**king gold.

Anyway, the bid team has stated they will be getting the community to vote on the name. Whether that means the moniker or the location name only time will tell. I'm not fussed on whether or not they are named Jets.

NSW and QLD cup are not professional competitions, they are semi-pro at best.

The Newtown Jets, like it or not, are an will always be part of the history of the NRL. Therefore their mascot should not and will be be allowed to be used by another team in the same competition regardless of any plan, or lack of plans, for Newtown to rejoin the comp.

 The Newtown Jets have nothing to do with the NRL and never did. I'm no fan of the Ipswich bid but talk about clutching at straws.

Yes, they have nothing to do with the NRL. But they had a lot to do with the NSWRL, the same competition as the NRL is now. There is just a name change to show that it is a national competition and not a state one anymore.

If you want to argue that Newtown has had nothing to do with the NRL, then you are also arguing that our competition began in 1998 and when we talk about the record books we can't look back further then 1998.

Simply put, if you think our competition started in 1908 regardless of names then the Jets are apart of the history of the competition that is now referred to as the NRL.

They aren't competing in the same 'markets' for sports fans, case closed

So if the Bears fail to get into the comp in 2013 and Ipswich decides to call themselves the bears you have no problem with that?

Its the same thing.

No it's not, because whilst the Bears might not get in in 2013, they are stilla likely chance for future expansion. Newtown is not.

Wasn't asking you champ, i was asking a supporter of that club/team/bid. Not a biased poster.

Redcliffe Dolphins and the Gold Coast Dolphins would also have been competing in different 'markets' for sports fans.

Ipswich wont get a start in 2013 anyway.
