Why do people call RU, 'rugby'??

Genuine question, not trolling or anything.

In Australia I was told it was Rugby Union.

In NZ it seems to be call Rugby.

In the UK it is Rugby Union, again to differentiate from Rugby League, yet I keep seeing Australian's stating the game as simply 'Rugby', when RL is as much rugby as RU.

In northern England, 'Rugby' is RL.

Its called that because thats its name.

i think it comes down to where your from...

i come from Rural NZ... a real RU heartland. so ive always called RU 'Rugby' and RL 'League'.

the same question can be asked for many sports...

i know in most of Australia, NZ & The USA... Football is still called 'Soccer'.

i dont think theres anything wrong with any term... as long as you can differentiate between them.

In Sydney RU is generally referred to as Rugby, and RL as League or Rugby League. yes, RL has as much right to the name Rugby but basically whats the point of calling it that if everyone's going to assume you mean RU?

Because here in WA they call BOTH codes 'rugby', that's why pal.

People used to simply call RL ‘football’ and RU ‘rugby’. Now we have soccer and AFL trying to forcefully appropriate the word football it’s all become a giant mess.

It really isn’t helped when we have the NSWRL state body, and in turn the ARL, referring to the game as simply League.

No.. you are showing your ignorance.. its full name is Rugby football not Rugby Union football... it is colloquially now known as Rugby Union.. but its name IS Rugby.

So RL isn't rugby at all just "League" whatever that means? Sorry you need to come to WA and see what we have to put up with. We have to differentiate. To me RL will always be Rugby League and Union, Union.

Stop making sh*t up, i didnt say that... RL has as much right to call itself Rugby as Rugby does... BOTH are Rugby... you can call RL Rugby if you wish, they do so in the North of England.. However in other places RL is just League or Rugby League..

and the most salient point in your post "To me"... that makes it your opinion... it doesnt make it fact based on history.

Erm which code???

I'm puzzled why on a RUGBY LEAGUE forum, people defend RU so much. Bizarre.

Rugby had the name first.. thats why they use it... and people on here defend the game because they like or love it... despite what some dumbarse aussies on here think, it is possible to love more than one sport.

im just pointing out to you the fact that most Kiwi's have been exposed to Rugby for much longer than you decided to jump on the League bandwagon.

thats why you have NFI...

You want to get really technical....

Rugby football was established in 1845. The 'schism' when league broke away from union was in the 1890s.

Union was there first. League is an offshoot of union. Therefore why shouldn't Union get to keep the name?

And, in anycase, it's been pointed out here that there are many regional variations. In some places it's called football; others union; others rugby. etc. It's just how it is.
