Will it be a poor 4 Nations?

I'm still pretty fine with our backline, ideally would have liked to see Matai and SKD in the centres obviously but like Bobby said am excited to see Beale and Locke go round. Add in KFFL and there is plenty of out and out pace.

I'm looking forward to this series more than any other in a long time. International rugby league is building nicely.
Well, its glass half full at the moment. England need to win:

* to capture the public attention, improve revenue, retain players, hold off RU

* improve interest in Australia and NZ in international football against England, which improves international revenue/ratings leading into the 2013 WC.

Unfortunately it probably won't happen. The game is strong in Australia and New Zealand, but its a two horse race with little interest beyond that.

I have a feeling it is going to be a England v Australia final this year. England look a lot stronger and the Kiwis are missing a thousand players.

i dread any performance by Wales. With the crusaders out of SL, will Wales still be there in the 4 nations in years to come? would seem a pointless exercise

I'm genuinely excited about it. I normally think England have a good chance, but this year I think they have a great chance.

Our forwards are probably still the best pack going. Roby, Graham and Ellis would walk into both NZ and Aus's pack, and with Peacock and Sinfield in fantastic form at the moment I think they will match everyone.

The big difference compared to last year is the backs, which are a significant improvement on last year. Widdop and Tomkins have another year under their belts, Chase is a match winner, and having a proven NRL performers in Jack Reed in the centres is much better choice than Atkins.

If you compare last years squad and now there are 13 changes (2010 first - bold are the better players)

Tony Clubb - Kirk Yeaman
Kevin Brown - Rangi Chase
Darrell Griffin - Jamie Peacock
Luke Robinson - Danny MacGuire
Eorl Crabtree - Adrian Morley
Shaun Lunt - Michael McIllorum (Shaun is better but had an injury ridden season)
Sam Burgess - Jamies Jones
Ryan Atkins - Jack Reed
Ben Harrison - Jon Wilkin - Both not international standard
Darryl Goulding - Ben Jones Bishop
Joel Tomkins - Carl Ablett
Stuart Fielden - Jamie Peacock
Sean O'Loughlin - Chris Heighington - Not sure how good Heighington is.

So, I think the squad is stronger, the starting line up will be stronger, and ultimately we can win this thing!

Locke & Beale are class players. They're rookies I know but damn they're both lightning quick and both are smart players. It will be good to see their pace in our backline.

Beale is a good player and I hope this experience really builds his confidence but I wouldn't be expecting big things from him in the centres. He's at his best at fullback and while he can do a job in the centres he's still very raw in that position at this level.

They will be fine, a majority of the Welsh born players have signed for Super League Clubs. Now they have two semi professional clubs in NL 2....as long as they keep up the junior development - they will be fine.

Its only a matter of time before SUper League Clubs start snapping up Welsh talent..

Wales are there on merit; they eliminated the French in last year's qualifier. They did what was asked of them and I wish them the best in the 4N - I'll be cheering them on against NZ at Wembley (hope England stuff them though :D).

... however, a full strength France team is a couple of notches above the best the Welsh can field. They were woefully under-strength against Wales in the decider and it cost them big time.

The Catalan Dragons are developing well, producing more and more decent French players of true SL standard, and a few are now making their way to clubs in England. The French game is only going to get stronger. Wales, in comparison, are in a weaker position with the loss of the Crusaders, a vital focal point for RL in the country. Fortunately, for the first time in twenty years, the English clubs are alert to the fact that there's plenty of potential talent in the Principality, so we should see a steady stream of Welsh players at SL clubs. It could be a bit hit or miss though compared to the Dragons' clearer development pathway.

I think it's more likely that we'll see France in future NH 4N competitions than Wales.

Inglis, Thurston say Kiwis rule rugby league world

BY BRETT KEEBLE
12 Oct, 2011 04:00 AM
IT hurts them to admit it, but Australian stars Johnathan Thurston and Greg Inglis concede New Zealand have displaced the Kangaroos as rulers of the rugby league world. But the match-winning halfback and centre are intent on helping Australia reclaim that ranking, starting with the Four Nations trophy the Kiwis won by upsetting the Kangaroos 16-12 in the final in Brisbane last year.
Apart from being the reigning Four Nations champions, New Zealand won the Centenary World Cup in 2008 and the Warriors qualified for the NRL, NYC and NSW Cup grand finals earlier this month, leaving Thurston under no illusions about who sits atop the international pile.
Thurston, who will line up in the halves alongside retiring captain Darren Lockyer in Australia’s warm-up Test against New Zealand at Ausgrid Stadium on Sunday, said the Kiwis now had the depth to cover the loss of key players like Manu Vatuvei and Steve Matai.
He said they would have their hands full trying to contain Kiwis skipper Benji Marshall and premiership-winning Manly playmaker Kieran Foran.
‘‘No doubt in my eyes, they’re the number-one rugby league nation in the world, and I think if we thought we were, it would be disrespectful and we’d be kidding ourselves, actually,’’ Thurston said yesterday, after being named captain of the Indigenous All Stars for the annual pre-season exhibition on the Gold Coast on February 4.
‘‘I don’t like it, but no doubt it’s good for the game. I think the Warriors got a lot of coverage over there [for making the grand final] during the Rugby World Cup, which is great ... and now the Tests, so hopefully that gets a lot more coverage as well in the international game.
‘‘They’ve got some mobility in their forwards, offloads, they’ve got some exciting outside backs, and their halves: Benji’s the best in the world and Kieran Foran’s just won a premiership.
‘‘No doubt there’s a lot of confidence in their team and no doubt they should feel confident, because they’re a very good team and we’re going to have to play to the best of our ability to beat them. If two or three of us are off, it’s going to make it very hard for us.’’
Thurston’s Cowboys teammate Kalifa Faifai Loa, called into the squad on Monday as a replacement for Vatuvei, will be one of five Kiwis making their Test debuts.
Inglis, who missed the Four Nations last year due to shoulder surgery, will not play on Sunday after clean-up surgery on his knee last month.
But he was confident of being available for the first game of the tournament, against New Zealand at Warrington on October 28.
‘‘They probably like to go in as underdogs, but I think we’re all on JT’s comments, that we hate to admit it, but they definitely are the number-one side in the world,’’ Inglis said.
‘‘For them to hold the trophy up last year, sitting at home watching it pretty much hurt, so we have to try to break their hold. Their three [Warriors] sides made it to the grand final this year and one walked away trumps, but it just goes to show they’re not too far behind the [club] rugby league world in Australia.’’
Inglis conceded Chris Lawrence and Willie Tonga, named in the centres against the Kiwis on Sunday, had the chance to get the jump on him but he backed his own ability to regain his spot for the Four Nations Tests against New Zealand, England and Wales.
‘‘Missing out last year has made me more hungry this year. There was a bit of doubt but before I went and saw the surgeon last Monday, I went for a gallop on Thursday and that made me more confident that he would give me the nod,’’ he said.
‘‘I spoke to [Australian coach] Tim Sheens during the two weeks to this build-up and he was pretty keen to have me on board, and the selectors were as well.
‘‘I was never close for this game, it was more about over there, and getting through this week and the next two weeks and probably strap the boots on over there.’’
Thurston and Inglis are keen to send Lockyer into retirement as skipper of the team that regained the Four Nations trophy.
‘‘This is his last game on Australian soil and people will remember that, so there’s 17 individuals that need to do their job on Sunday to get the result,’’ Thurston said. ‘‘Locky’s the type of person to not make it about himself, so everyone needs to do their job.’’
Having combined with Lockyer to help Queensland win the past six State of Origin series, Inglis wants to win one more international title with his inspirational skipper.
‘‘That was in the back of my mind,’’ Inglis said.
‘‘It’s a bit upsetting that I won’t play with him in his last game in Australia – but hopefully we can get a win over there and come back with the trophy.’’
I do admit it's going to be tough to win it this year though with injuries and it being played in England. Aus have a pretty weak squad too so England must rate themselves a pretty good chance. Should be a close series.

:? You and others spend a lot of time ridiculing England, but now you're saying they must rate themselves a good chance because of Australia and NZ's weakened squads. England have a fair few injuries too and are hardly at full strength.

Pete, I think Beale did ok for Hodges during the season. I really like him at centre tbh, and I think thats where his future lies. If Benji can put him in some holes, I think his pure speed is gonna blitz em.

Really looking forward to seeing how he goes this weekend. More than any other player actually.

You'll be pleasently surprised I'm sure.

I still think we will beat them, but with our injuries it could be difficult to win the series. I recognise that England could upset us but really hope we finally beat them up there after a bit of a drought. Not as confident as I was a month or so ago, didn't anticipate so many injuries but geez I really hope we smash em.

Good to see 2 of Spud's '4 horsemen' admit that we're the best.

do you know why i have'nt brought up the "4 horsemen" this year?

cos it's only 2 horsemen, a fat injured lad who won't be playing anyway and mr lockyer,i say that out of respect for a legend, but he's clearly past it now...

2 horsemen we can handle ;-)
