This is outrageous, these poor guys have now missed the two last RLWC's, yet they haven't lost a game.

It stinks.

Me personally, I think if you are good enough to go through without losing, you have earned your spot.

What happened to golden point or extra time?

The RLWC qualifiers are a sham.

Anyone else agree?

Italy is nothing but a stacked team full of mercenaries, the guys playing for them now, will not give a shit come 2013 unless they are guaranteed 10k or whatever per game..

RLIF, you have let us down again.

Well you can't say Lebanon didn't have it's share of Aussies in their ranks.

Look, it's unfortunate for them, but there had a to be a winner and a loser today.

I also think goal difference is the best method too in these cases, because what would we be discussing right now if the Lebanon/Italy match had happened earlier on??

Am gutted, I really can't believe that it has happened again, unbelievable. Been in touch with my brother in law who is an assistant coach and they are all shattered, not much more to say.

LP, all I'm saying is, in a game like this, no draw and that's that.

Play on till we have a winner.
Well if that's the case, then it WILL come down to goalkickers...

Points diff is a greater reflection of a team effort that an extra time field goal...

No way.

Just say one team plays all their games in a blizzard , the other team plays all their games in perfect sunshine and points come into it.

One side is disadvantaged before a ball has been kicked in anger while the other rakes them up.

It should be win for win.

Massive opportunity lost to grow the sport in the middle east, but congrats Italy!

Do they not play each other once at home and once away? I thought this time last year they played each other and now they're playing the return legs... Meaning Italy also had their turn in the sub-zero Russian conditions...

The rules would have been known by all teams before the comp started. Bad luck to Lebanon but these things happen.

It's a great thing for the game that it was that much of a photo finish. If Italy are ready for WC then you could say the same about Lebanon, so all we need is for one more nation to step up (maybe Jamaica) then we can look at having a 16 team WC. This is THE ideal number for a tournament. 4 groups of 4, then you're left with 8 teams going into the knockout phase...

Who knows, maybe 2017...

The set up with the qualifying and the number of automatic qualifiers was all wrong, I think that's pretty obvious now. I also can't understand why teams didn't play home and away, and why the qualifiers are taking place now, two years ahead of the actual tournament. That being said, this was a qualifying group. It wasn't a knock-out match between Lebanon and Italy, it was a group match and just happened to be the group decider as the last game. It's extremely harsh on Lebanon, especially considering that they went out in a similar way last time, but that's sport.

Also, I don't see how you can suggest that players would be willing to play in a WCQ tournament for free, and then would not want to play in a far more prestigious, high profile tournament that they have helped their nation qualify for? Surely the whole point was so that they would be able to play in 2013? Italy going through could be great for the game. They need to sort out issues with the split and review their structure, but I think Italians will much prefer RL to Union and if the tournament gets good coverage there then it could be a massive boost for the game. It's certainly no bad thing that they have qualified, in fact they will probably be my team in 2013.

Sorry Parra, I have a lot of respect for the content you provide to this forum but what a ridiculous thread and post.

Have a look at the Lebanese team that took part in the WCQs, they had just as many heritage players as Italy. The only difference is, Italy actually had NRL quality players such as Minichello and Mauro which brought publicity towards the tournament. It makes no sense that these players will fly over to Serbia to play in front of a few hundred, yet decline to play at a World Cup.

Thanks to the great efforts by the IRFL, Italy's domestic scene is the equivalent of many other RL playing nations including Lebanon.

Extra-time? The game was NOT a final or a knockout game, it was a standard group stage game; the top team goes through. You may as well call the soccer world cup a sham because they don't have extra time during group stages.

 Should've read this before I posted, pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Well in the 2000 Qualifiers, Lebanon beat Italy 36-16 knocking them out. Then they went to USA and thrash a mainly domestic tomahawks side 62-8.
