Resurgent Canberra are hoping to bankroll their NRL finals success into a healthier slice of the free-to-air TV pie in 2013.

Following a 2012 in which they appeared on Channel Nine just twice during the regular season, the Raiders are adamant they deserve more exposure and recognition after emerging as one of the most exciting teams in the NRL in their unexpected charge to the semi-finals.

Raiders' boss Don Furner has requested his club host high-rating St George Illawarra in one of the marquee Thursday night games that both Channel Nine and the NRL have scheduled to kick off the new $1 billion broadcast deal in the first month of the new season.

On the back of their entertaining brand of football and a roster that boasts some of the most exciting names in the game, Furner said it was time Canberra received greater free-to-air recognition - and vital exposure for the club's sponsors.

"We want something that amounts to our fair share," Furner said.

"We are looking for some sort of cooperation from the NRL and it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

"I understand the commercial realities of it all and I know Channel Nine paid a lot of money for the rights but there has to be a better way.

"We had two games on Channel Nine last year and, if it goes that way again, we could win 19 out of our first 19 games and still not be on free-to-air TV during the first 20 rounds next year."

Newcastle hosted the Dragons in the round-one opener this year on a Thursday night and Furner said the Raiders were keen play the joint venture club in Canberra on a Thursday night in round three or four in 2013.

"The only Channel Nine game we had at home this year was against the Bulldogs (in round 23) that was a reward for how we were going," Furner said.

"We are hoping the NRL will apply the same sort of thinking to the new draw given how well we went at the end of last season."

The NRL will release the draw next week for the first 20 rounds of the new season. The round-one Thursday night season opener is tipped to be between arch-rivals Sydney Roosters and South Sydney.

Furner said he hoped the Raiders' Channel Nine allowance would be raised to six games in 2013, starting with a Thursday night jewel which would be an early-season boon to the club, its sponsors and fans.

The NRL draw is expected to be released late next week at Rugby League Central.

A team of NRL Staff and a specialist Canadian based company regarded as world leaders in sport scheduling, Optimal Planning Solutions, is finalising the complex challenge of scheduling all dates and times for the first 20 rounds of the 2013 season.

“It is an enormous logistical exercise as we match the requests of 16 individual clubs against our contractual obligations, ground availability and the sports market in general,” NRL General Manager of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk, said today.

“There are 192 individual events to schedule across venues that involve multiple hirers as well as the importance of providing feature Premiership matches and representative games such as State of Origin.

“This is the first time the season will be scheduled in advance and it will give clubs and fans more certainty.

“20 rounds will be scheduled when the draw is released and the remaining six will be scheduled after round 16.

“We are very conscious of the expectation that is building around the draw and believe we will be in a position to release it by late next week.”

NRL.com will be your first place to get the full draw when it is released either Thursday or Friday next week.

What happened to Canberra/Manly in Shenzhen?

FYI
its off for 2013 ..... spoke to an insider at the Raiders , it couldn't be organised within the time frame . it will take most of next year to set it up , thats how big a logistical exercise it is

.... so will now revert to the original Manly plan which was to hold the game in 2014

Shame. At least they're still going for it in 2014.

So then it's all but confirmed that Easts/Souths and Brisbane/Manly will be the first two games of the season on the Thursday and Friday nights.

Warriors v roosters in round 2 at Eden park. Saw it in article somewhere this morning

However, rival clubs will get their chance to cash in when they play home games against the Roosters - starting with the Warriors in round two. The Auckland-based club has already made arrangements to move the clash from Mt Smart Stadium to the 50,000 capacity Eden Park.

The 2013 NRL draw will be released next week.

NRL General Manager of Football Operations Mr Nathan McGuirk said today that while the draw was close to finalisation there were a number of steps needed to ensure that there was the greatest possible alignment of contractual obligations and club requests.

“This has been the most complex draw process we have attempted,” Mr McGuirk said.

“The modelling so far looks really exciting but we are not at the point yet where we can finalise the draw and I expect that will happen next week.

“Our focus here is on delivering the best result and that is what we believe we can achieve.”

FFS.

The NRL has known it has to schedule 20 complete rounds since August. Why is it taking so long? It's not as though clubs' requests will have varied greatly from previous seasons.

I have no idea why they couldn't have a draft draw done by the GF then perfected it in early October. Next week is pretty much the last week of November. I doubt we've ever released the draw that late.

Hardly surprising. These are the same useless Karmichaels that clearly stated on their own site just last week that the draw would be released either today or tomorrow. Absolute joke this mob is.

A few Friday night games for the Knights.

More regional games (at least one per team)

2-3 international games (NRL games played in countries not named Australia or NZ).

I doubt I'll see any of my wishes coming true in 2013 :-(

It's a good move by the NRL. Better to get the best possible result and release next week then not get that result and release this week. It's not going to have any impact on fans travelling plans for next season either. The only reason anybody is getting annoyed with it is because we live in a era where everyone wants everything nor, not tomorrow or even in 5 minutes. It is the toughest draw in the world to sort out after-all, says the guys who do the MLB, NFL and soccer comps.

I wrote this in the other draw thread

So who pays for the Canadian mob to come up with the draw, channel 9 or the NRL (ARLC?)?

I'm pretty skeptical about the 'priority of clubs request' line. Plus I highly doubt the lowest possible penalty draw would be passed while 9 is around.

The NRL is responsible for the DRAW, the networks and clubs are then responsible for fixturing basically.

To put everything in perspective - the NRL released this year's draw on November 8 or 9 last year. We're now only just over a week behind that date, with the added struggle of scheduling 20 rounds ahead of time. Previously it was only 5, and that came a full month after the draw was released.

No....its not ''now''...or in ''5 minutes"...its 9 days

Its been over a week since they said it would be in 9 days time

Their estimation has disappointed a lot of people....people wont cop too much of this sorta amateur crap, they'll walk away.

And what happens when they take time and still release a draw wildly skewed to favour certain clubs? Still a good move then?
