    Old Rules

Did you notice which team (hypothetically) had the loose head? Very likely the opposition. I say "hypothetically" because the advantage of the loose head was dependent on the front rows packing correctly. As distinct from the more accustomed practice of veering around, then crashing into each...

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

Even when they affect the Average, AFL Reach figures indicate substantial numbers of unique viewers who only tune in for a short time. Would be illuminating to know how few minutes that typically represents. If it meant most of their audience were regularly switching off after 1 or 2 mins, why...

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

I'll give this question another go. The official ratings blurb says Total TV "is calculated using the audience average for the program as time-coded by the network..." What does this mean in absolute terms i.e. roughly how many minutes of a typical NRL or AFL game does someone have to watch...

    2024 Crowd Watch

Wouldn't disagree that 4 teams is more practical than 3 teams. However, we should be wary of the values and tropes of club RL. Each international fixture between two of the stronger nations ought to be inherently meaningful, regardless of format. An England v Brazil Soccer friendly or one-off...

    The future of woman's RL

Take goals out of AFL and not much remains, other than all the fumbling. This seems to be the problem for AFLW. Not sure what they can do - reduce the size of the pitch? 6 points for a behind? Our WSL GF was also "a ripper". Albeit a very different type of game from NRLW GF. If anyone wants to...

AFL Troll: We are the true Australian national football code. LU Stalwart: Fumbleball is a cult. RL is an international game. AFL Troll: But none of you give a crap about Poms and Kiwis. All you care about is NRL and Origin. LU Stalwart: I agree.

So is international RL appealing or not? If not, why keep citing it in code-war contexts? Just accept that NRL v AFL is domestic comp v domestic comp. With Origin as the only differentiation.

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

Aside from Pacific Islanders, NRL followers in NSW and QLD seem to find international RL very easy to ignore. The disdain will not go unnoticed in AFL States. NRL cannot capitalize on this advantage over AFL if their fans continue to clock off after the NRL GF.

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

I'm still not completely au fait with the distinction between Reach and Average. The criterion for inclusion in the Reach figure is watching 1 minute. How long does someone have to watch to be counted in the Average figure? Through the regular season, AFL seem to attract significantly more...

Cobblers! Expanding sustainably from 4 to 6 to 10 over 7 years. In what sense is that "cobbled together"? NRLW faces the same obstacles as other domestic comps in women's sport. Competing for attention in a market saturated by the equivalent men's product.

"comparable special treatment" Nowhere near the backing for Giants and Suns. Plus the draft.

AFAIK Storm have received no comparable special treatment. If we draw a veil over the salary cap scandal, it underlines their amazing success. Long list of star players unwanted by other clubs or underperformers at previous clubs. No Midas Touch from Craig Bellamy in 1991-92 sadly. Swinton...

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

I think most RL fans want excellence to prosper at the business end of the season. Onus is on challengers to match the standards of successful teams. No offence to your favourite sport, but I honestly don't know what excellence would look like in AFL. Seems to involve far more random elements...

    NRLW - 2024

Memory a bit hazy, but I think Dragons gave Shaylee Bent their Player of the Year award before the GF in 2019. Might have been Rookie of the Year. The comp had 4 teams. At that point, she'd only played 3 games. RL is inordinately fond of awards and presentations. Gives Hollywood a run for...

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

Someone on BF reckons a Swans/Lions GF would maximize nationwide viewership. On the premise that everyone in VIC/WA/SA will watch irrespective of participants. Whereas casuals in NSW/QLD will only tune in for a local team. From memory, the ratings for GF 2019 Fumbles wouldn't support the...
