    "American Rugby"?

The forward pass wasn't legalized until 1906. One could say that the game was similar to league between 1880 and 1906, but I wouldn't. In my view, the main difference between American football and both codes of rugby isn't the forward pass its the legality of blocking and other forms of...

    "American Rugby"?

I have read the first rules for American football. They were taken almost word for word from the then current rules of Rugby (1876ish). When they first introduced the scrimmage in 1880, the scrimmage was essentially a stand up, unbound scrum. It was uncontested in the sense that the defenders...

    Golden Point Irony

Draw and split points after 80 during the regular season. Five minutes each way then golden try in the finals, if anyone is in the lead after a five minute period of golden try they win.

Manly v Broncos: How many will they get?

Economics is fun. Especially the law of supply and demand. The supply of tickets to the game is limited, ie the number of seats at a stadium. The demand for tickets is quite flexible: who is playing, when are they playing, why are they playing. The reason that matches in other countries (the...

Nsw cup. A mickey mouse comp.

I may be late to the party, but I have a question about byes and points. I know its traditional to give two points to a team having a bye. But why? It seems odd that teams get points for sitting around doing nothing. I also know that the teams having three byes in the NSW Cup played one fewer...

    GF Qualifer

So where should the game be played? A "neutral" Sydney where it would be a virtual home final for Wests or a game that might draw 20k if its Melbourne v. Warriors? How about we schedule it for Suncorp as a test to see how passionate Queenslanders are about league? Or maybe Perth so neither team...

    GF Qualifer

Seems to me that someone is a little sore over certain teams not being able to get home QFs. To be honest, I understand where both sides are coming from, but I think that true home finals with STRONG incentives to go to a larger stadium when required is a better idea. But again, I can still live...

    GF Qualifer

So you're saying that Melbourne, the minor premiers, should have to travel interstate to play a grand final qualifier against a team that finished 3 to 5 places lower then them on the ladder?

The annual finals system debate thread

One Hundred and Fifty Thousand people for an NRL game? Bring on the Top 5! :D Seriously though, could not agree more. Especially since the top five had playoff games for teams finishing equal fifth. The right ending to a few games could mean extra winner take all games to get into the finals...

The annual finals system debate thread

Oh absolutely. That is one of the many reasons why this overly complex plan could never work. To be honest though: if I could I would bring back the old "Right of Challenge" from the 1920s (or whenever it was) then the Top 4 could never fail to win the premiership unless they had 2 loses...

The annual finals system debate thread

I fail to see any disadvantage to a system where only winners and the 1st/2nd place teams are guaranteed anything. And I rather prefer letting teams earn home finals by winning to letting teams lose there way to a home final as in the AFL system or simply be given one as some people prefer...

    The stripping rule.... again

I'd take option A. If you can't keep hold of the ball while you are being tackled, you might want to reconsider your sport.

    Golden goals v penalties

I voted for Golden Goal, but now that its been mentioned, I like the replay idea.
