Professional?

I'm not working for NRL.com here. Harden up princess.

Actually if you want to be particular, the posts I made with official info in them actually had no such word, only in another post I made later saying I updated something.

Either way, dry your eyes princess ;-)

Yet you yourself have bastardised the Souths team name by putting an apostrophe in when none exists.

Ironic.

When to use apostrophes

The correct use of apostrophes can be difficult. Many people are unsure of when to use them, sometimes adding apostrophes when they're not needed and at other times leaving them out when they should be used!
Apostrophes are used for only two purposes. These are to indicate:
  • contraction
  • ownership
Contraction

The term 'contraction' refers to the shortening of a single word or two words that are adjacent (next to each other). When two adjacent words are joined together and contracted an apostrophe is used to indicate the omission of one or more letters.

Technically the term South's is a contraction of South Sydney. The word South refers to a specific direction and it is impossible to have plural South. As such, use of an apostrophe is correct English in this case however I would settle for Souths.

When the person who is basically responsible (by his own choice) for every game day thread and thread containing any sort of "official" information regarding the NRL competition, bastardises your team name at every opportunity, it becomes quite annoying after a while. I don't give a sh*t if you do it in regular discussion threads, but when you are providing a service to people who read this site specifically for this information that you provide, it comes off as a fair insult.

Yes I know this isn't nrl.com but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't show some level of professionalism and take pride in what you do.

I would hate to see the number of complaints you'd come up with if the Bulldogs name was bastardised in most of the game day threads involving them. Just asking that you show a little bit of respect for the people who read the information that you post and leave your personal opinion out of it. That is all.

No, you are wrong and digging a whole further for yourself.

For a start, South's is not a contraction of South Sydney. If it was, it would be South's' (not the apostrophe after the small 's') or even South'S' if case is to be considered, and as it's a place name then it surely has to be.

Also, you cannot choose which part of the contraction you keep (ie, keeping the S from Sydney but lopping off the ydney). A more correct contraction (other than those mentioned above) would have been South'y or South'ney or similar.

South's is just a typo that you have made when trying to prove a point. Embarrassed by this, you attempt to show that you have used proper English when, in fact, you are trying to apply rules that are not applicable (it is quite permissible for Souths to be of plural form here as it is a place name and not a word describing the direction) and ignoring the basic tenets of those that you do site.

Quite frankly it just makes you look illiterate.

lol

If its not a contraction of South Sydney when referencing the South Sydney Rabbitohs then where does it come from? I'd love for you to educate me on the history of my club.

Ftr, you are the one digging a "whole" for yourself or whatever fraction you wish to express.

Stick to baiting Newcastle fans and bitching about how the Raiders are treated mate.

In the posts containing the "official information" you're harping on about, there is no such reference to Souffs that you're whinging about. It is a single reference in a game day thread made about 10 posts in mentioning the team has been updated in an earlier post. I believe that post was far enough on to be part of regular discussion.

I'd see your point if I'd included it in a graphic or in the posting of the team list, but tbh I think you're being an uptight pedant. I do take some level of pride and professionalism into the main post in each of these threads, that I would think is quite obvious, but I don't see why it should extend to general posts I make after the fact, which is where the Souffs reference was made.

I have never ever ever seen "South's" referenced ANYWHERE in the last twenty years, certainly not by the club itself or the NRL anyway.

It's a reference to the name of the club, much in the way we say Norths, Easts and Wests.

The West Belconnen Warriors are still called Wests, but it's hardly a contraction of West Belconnen now is it?

Ftr, you are the one digging a "whole" for yourself or whatever fraction you wish to express.

Whoops, stupid typos. (Or is that typo's, because, despite the fact that it looks and in fact is completely wrong, typos is a contraction of typographical errors and therefore, according to you, must have an apostrophe).

Stick to baiting Newcastle fans and bitching about how the Raiders are treated mate.

Tim, what I am basically trying to say here is that when you type anything in the match day thread, I and many other South Sydney fans take what you type seriously as you are seen as the bearer of the official information. Hence, I tend to read everything you say, whereas I would tend to skip or ignore stuff typed by others. It would be much appreciated if you could refrain from referring to my team as "Souffs" when making updates to the match day thread. As I mentioned earlier, South's, Souths, Bunnies, Rabbits whatever would be much appreciated.

It's a reference to the name of the club, much in the way we say Norths, Easts and Wests.

The West Belconnen Warriors are still called Wests, but it's hardly a contraction of West Belconnen now is it.

TBH, on further reflection I believe we are both wrong. Wests, Souths, West's, South's whatever is actually a contraction of "Southern Suburbs of" i.e. Southern Suburbs of Sydney, Western Suburbs of Belconnen. Hence South Sydney or West Belconnen is actually a contraction to begin with. Technically you are incorrect further though because you should still use an apostrophe, but no one else does so I digress. The names are probably more slang now than proper English anyway so meh.

Before you argue with this, consider the following,

You never hear South Australia or Western Australia spoken of as Souths or Wests and this is because the "South" or "West" is a shortening of a singular, i.e. Southern State of Australia.

I did however find this bit of your post quite interesting-

Whoops, stupid typos. (Or is that typo's, because, despite the fact that it looks and in fact is completely wrong, typos is a contraction of typographical errors and therefore, according to you, must have an apostrophe).

Considering this part of the post earlier on in the same thread, which kicked off the entire discussion-

South's is just a typo that you have made when trying to prove a point. So basically its ok for you to attack someone over a perceived typo, but when the shoe is on the other foot, suddenly, typo's become ok?

Quite frankly, this makes you look like a hypocrite. In fact, it doesn't make you look like one, it proves conclusively that you are one.

Translation: You've got nothing.

Incorrect again, because, unlike you, I have a life and don't feel the need to stick my nose into arguments that don't involve me to begin with. Quite frankly, arguing about apostrophe's and grammatical errors on a football forum is quite tedious. Perhaps we should get back to arguing about Rugby League? As a pair of Mod's on this forum, it would be good form for us to set a good example for others and stop hijacking this thread. If you would like to discuss this further you can send me a PM.

I don't think it makes me a hypocrite. If you had simply owned up to the fact that you made a typo in the first place instead of going to great lengths to find that some obscure rule regarding the use of apostrophes makes it acceptable then we could have moved on.

But I digress. It's certainly a small issue to disagree over, and does neither of us credit.

Back to football, Timmah you left out a trial from your list:

Canberra Raiders vs Wests (or is it West's? ;-)) Magpies, West Belconnen, Saturday Feb 13th.

Good Man, lets smoke the peace pipe and get over it.

Looks like Dave Taylor will be a late scratching from this weekends trial against Manly. All reports are that he rolled an ankle at training pretty badly. Could even miss the Allstars match.

I don't see this "unwritten rule" anywhere in the forum guidelines. As far as I'm concerned, in posts containing "official information" I'm respectful, once those posts are made, anything after is free game. I won't be policed on what I post after the fact. If I ever do it in any match graphics or team lists, as I said, do your worst. Otherwise, like it or lump it.
