This is standard operating procedure for Thurston, and always has been. When he is on, he is on... but when he isn't - which is way more often than any Cowboys fan will admit - the bloke does a fantastic impersonation of the invisible man. Has never been one to win behind a beaten pack, either.
Thurston will almost definitely end up an immortal, it's just another media darling award. I don't even think Thurston is fit to lace Lockyers boots, let alone Johns. Cam Smith I would also have ahead of him. Inglis can still make a decent claim, too... although I feel he suffers a similar plight to Thurston in that he has a propensity to go missing. Thurston is definitely the best half of his generation - but it has been a generation of extremely lacklustre halves. Does that automatically earn him the immortal moniker?
It doesn't even matter if it's a coaching decision for mine, the greats know when to get the ball. I can't even fathom Johns, Lockyer, Fittler... hell even Ricky Stuart not getting the ball any and every time they wanted it. It's no excuse for Thurston - it's his team, the whole team is built around him. There's no excuses left for him, he's had good teams around him for years now... it's way past time to deliver.
