I only recent found out there are TWO Kansas City's.

Maybe there are two Brisbane's?
That's only because the border between Missouri and the state of Kansas runs through the middle of the city, so it needs a governmental structure for each state.

That is not the case in Brisbane, but it is basically the same thing as happens in border towns across Australia, for example Coolangatta-Tweed Heads and Albury–Wodonga.

Yeah - there's a team from each of those places as well. That's a strength of the NRL it's tribal in biggest city in country. Brisbane could be same but you want a plastic broncos knockoff & Adelaide. That was tried & failed. Brisbane clubs still exist through it all & will when firehawks fail.

I'm not married to the Firehawks, and I don't understand what this really has to do with the post you are replying to lol.

I was being facetious.

In all honesty how many teams can Brisbane / SEQ support?

I say 4.
The real question isn't how many can they support, it's how many should they support.

If you were willing to have a bunch of weak suburban and regional clubs that are totally reliant on the NRL to make ends meat, then I'm sure that Brisbane alone could support 4-5 clubs and the Sunshine Coast another.

But if you want clubs that are powerful commercial entities that are sustainable in their own right, then less is more.

So they could support up to 7 or 8, but they should only get 3 in the short term, and maybe a 4th in the long term.

The only way an extra team will be funded is through broadcast rights money, and the only reason they'll agree to an extra Brisbane team is that it gives both Channel 9 and Fox Sports the opportunity to have one exclusive Brisbane game each week. Would a 3rd Brisbane team bring in enough additional subscribers beyond two existing teams to make it worth pursuing for Fox Sports? Highly unlikely I would've thought, unless it is replacing a team from elsewhere...

South East Queensland I would say 4 medium/long term.

Broncos & Titans as is, though I'd like to see Titans push harder in to Northern NSW as well.

For the other 2 I'm leaning towards another 'Brisbane' team for now (Firehawks, Bombers etc) based on in the South of the city. Then instead of trying to create teams to cover large bases like "Western Corridor Jets" or "Moreton Bay Dolphins" bring Ipswich or Sunshine Coast in when they're up to supporting their own side playing out of those areas for most of their games.

Broncos - 12 games Suncorp.
Titans - 11/12 games Gold Coast, maybe 1 game in Northern NSW.
Firehawks - 12 games Suncorp.

Then Ipswich or Sunshine Coast 10-20 years down the line with all or most of their games in a new stadium in the area, maybe derby games at Suncorp.

I prefer the Bombers bid, but want it incorporate the process that the Firehawks are using. Direct association with Easts Tigers and Wynnum-Manly Seagulls, composite Brisbane Bombers name, immediately establishes a pathway chuck the Easts and Wynnum logos on the back of the jersey,

3rd Brisbane team would draw larger TV audience than Perth or Adelaide

Seagulls tried to appeal to both GC & nnsw. NSW ppl won't follow qld team so it failed.
2nd Brisbane team with no point of difference to broncos won't gain support. Nrl tried with Crushers & it failed.
Regional teams for areas like Sunshine Coast limited to small fan base. Steelers for example have been cast aside. Another failure.

Seagulls & Crushers were 20+ years ago, might be time to stop pretending it's 1998.

Regional teams like North Queensland and Newcastle are disasters.. Don't you support Redcliffe getting a team playing out of Dolphin Oval? That would be limited to a smaller fanbase than Ipswich or Sunshine Coast (with another 20 years population growth).

Moreton Bay has population bigger than both those places maybe combined. Being in Brisbane allows for derbies but also doesn't limit support from sunshine coast. Team based on sunshine coast would never get support from Brisbane or boast TV metro TV ratings

well the fox deal is done so either there is already an increase in payment built in if expansion happens, or it will all be down to the next fta deal to pick up the $15mill annual bill. Keep hearing there is “provision” in the Fox contract but what does that mean?

He’s right about the GC and Northern NSW.

Even today it makes absolutely no commercial sense whatsoever for a GC team to target the much smaller, much less densely populated market, with a cultural divide, in Northern NSW.

It’s like local teams in Canberra that have tried to grow their presence in country NSW over Canberra, it’s always a bad idea.
