The NRL has an interesting split of fans. I'd say the fans that go to every game and travel would be a small percentage. I love going to a game, but I love watching a weekend of sport at home. I think the latter type of fan is more prevalent and this is why the game is focused on coverage vs game day experience.

What defines a supporter in the modern game is very subjective but if you did a pole and asked the average sport fan "Who you follow in the NRL and do you watch games at home?", I'd say it would be a drastically different figure.

Why will cairns care about PNG & vice versa?!
They don't, its a team for the region, they are just aligning a dedicated pathway directly from digitel cup to this new franchise, and also able to pull from thier local juniors too (the northern pride)
No different to dragons contracting nene mcdonald on the wing, its just this team will be able to have more guys like him , since distance is a lot closer then anywhere else you would base a team (not in PNG that is) cairns is a 1 hour flight to port moresby, PNG is too unstable to have the NRL trust a license there, yes games can be played, but not fulltime, and you cannot have a team representing a nation, thats what internationals are for, this would be just another club

This works cross code as well, and is exactly what Melbourne have done

End of the day a "die hard rusted on fan" as vlandys would say is not your average person, most people who like one sport will also watch another, and are capably of supporting multiple teams

A team from Perth would look to emulate this, they aren't taking on the Eagles and Dockers, they compete in a different sport, they would be looking to make themselves the second choice team for those supporters
So most people in Melbourne aren’t normal then judging by the strorns crowds and memberships

Perth provides expansion into non NRL area but needs lots of funding & NRL not going to do it. No backer has emerged.

Nz 2 was to be about player development but even rugby is struggling for players there. In terms of bringing money to game this bid does nothing. In fact could be another titans.

Tigers / jets brings financial strength, more Brisbane content to boast broadcasting money. Tackles afl in key battleground just like gold coast before.

Only one bid stacks up
No backer has emerged because one hasn't been called for, if the NRL said "we want a team here" and put it out to tender I'm sure a bunch of bids would come out of the woodwork

It wouldn't be any more costly than a 2nd NZ team (if anything probably less) and as every other sport has shown, most of whom are much smaller in every regard to the NRL, the "travel is too hard" argument is void

SE Qld needs time to settle into its new 3 team layout, the Titans are still haven't really gotten to their feet.
A 4th team would be much better brought in as a potential team 19/20 further down the line, 1 safe heartland with 1 true expansion like they hopefully do now

Because as unfortunate as it is it wouldn't actually bring much more to the game than the PNG supporters already do

Whats the point in having a team represent an area it doesnt play in

I'd imagine your average PNG local couldn't afford to regularly fly to Cairns for regular season games and I'd assume any PNG TV rights would be worth close to nothing
Australian govt has talked about backing PNG, i just think it would be better if it was based in far north qld, rather than in PNG as a "png team"
To me having the warriors in NZ is great, but it doesn't mean they have to ONLY contract NZ local talent, some of their best squads had james maloney, chad townsend and steve price...
Now if we "PNG" team based in png for the papuans, do you think they'd be able to get chad townsend to play for them, or would a place like cairns be more suitable... and it would loosen the perception that it was an papuan only team

Roy Morgans poll with this relaxed definition of a "supporter" show the Storm as the most supported team in the NRL

Funny that, its not like Victoria is a rusted on AFL state, oh wait

That's not how it works. We knew Brisbane bids years old. 2nd kiwi bid will be same backers as 2007 bid. Perth will be Benny & sage & unnamed business ppl.

So they can continue to barely fill it every other week?

Majority of Sydney "fans" prefer to watch from their couch so I dont know why they are the most stubbornly against non Sydney teams, they'll still be on the same box in your living room
This is bs

Im pretty sure the cowboys would have something to say about this

as for PNG attracting aus players your dead right, which is why we should continue to pump up the game in PNG with more internationals, Id even love to see NSW and or QLD play a PNG side, and all the while we can sit on this golden goose hoping that one day the country itself develops enough to sustain a first grade professional RL team

hence my quotation marks on supporter

but end of the day its not as far removed as what most of you guys call a supporter in Sydney

Melbourne out performs most if not all Sydney clubs on almost every merit,

but for some reason "expansion is risky and AFL states wont support NRL teams" lol
Not juniors they don’t

and storm had a hundred million thrown at them

even clubs with leagues club haven’t had that level of support over ten years or even 20 years

Storm could be placed in any other location and they probably would’ve had more impact

at least we aren’t spending hundreds of million trying to convert afl kids to league like afl is trying to do in nsw and qld

its not how its been done no, but is how it should be done

grow some balls, pick a strategic location or 2, let multiple bidders bid and pick the best option

Perth has been blue balled enough times by the NRL over the years I can understand anyone with quiet aspirations of owning an NRL side there being hesitant of coming forward early

Your last line is the reason for the first

"thrown at them" is another word for investment, and successful investment at that
you have to spend money to make money
