its not how its been done no, but is how it should be done

grow some balls, pick a strategic location or 2, let multiple bidders bid and pick the best option

Perth has been blue balled enough times by the NRL over the years I can understand anyone with quiet aspirations of owning an NRL side there being hesitant of coming forward early
Coz they all are tight arses, they reach out for hand outs, instead of building a club like redcliffe, or a local competition like the brl then bidding for a combined team or just any ol club, to the likes of what Redcliffe, Easts, and Ipswich had to do, hell nearly all the nswrl clubs had to get promoted, these guys think we are a dot on a map, we deserve one... what are you bringing to the table??, might aswell be Argentina than Perth,
The ARLC aren't looking to build some new team, they want to promote one, let them do it, and just fund the grant via the broadcast deal, they want competetive juniors, pathways, and local infrastructure ready for NRL, dolphins had all this, plus they had assets, not backers assets, they are already a rugby league club... thats what the arlc want, they aint going hold your hand show you the ropes on how to be successful rl club, they are just handing you keys and letting you run with it

Perth provides expansion into non NRL area but needs lots of funding & NRL not going to do it. No backer has emerged.

Nz 2 was to be about player development but even rugby is struggling for players there. In terms of bringing money to game this bid does nothing. In fact could be another titans.

Tigers / jets brings financial strength, more Brisbane content to boast broadcasting
so rugby league lol. We need to expand. Let’s keep adding teams t9 our heartlands.

no one except these two consortiums you mean?

That's not how it works. We knew Brisbane bids years old. 2nd kiwi bid will be same backers as 2007 bid. Perth will be Benny & sage & unnamed business ppl.
And we’ve had three bid consortiums talking about bidding for ten years in the west!

No backer has emerged because one hasn't been called for, if the NRL said "we want a team here" and put it out to tender I'm sure a bunch of bids would come out of the woodwork

It wouldn't be any more costly than a 2nd NZ team (if anything probably less) and as every other sport has shown, most of whom are much smaller in every regard to the NRL, the "travel is too hard" argument is void

SE Qld needs time to settle into its new 3 team layout, the Titans are still haven't really gotten to their feet.
A 4th team would be much better brought in as a potential team 19/20 further down the line, 1 safe heartland with 1 true expansion like they hopefully do now
Except there is. consortium led by cumins and a cosnorting um led by Puddy Have both gone public as wanting to bid.
If sage will once again want to bid is yet to be seen, plus whoever else comes out of the woodwork.
Clubs are now making a profit, might entice some investors if they think they can actually make money.

Our AFL mate is confused with the difference between expanding the game and expanding the competition.

Expand the game: go to somewhere new.
Expand the competition: go to where you know a team will be supported.

McDonalds don't put a franchise in Antarctica just because the odd penguin might want a quarter pounder. But they do put another one close to another one because they know there is demand.

So rugby league, no wonder we haven’t really grown beyond our traditional shoreline in a hundred years.

McDonald’s dont open another maccas next door because the existing one is popular. If they were rugby league they’d have never opened outside of america, you know because the rest of the world didn’t eat burgers.

As opposed to your beloved AFL that has expanded all over the globe.

I reiterate that I am not opposed to a Perth club.

I am opposed to AFL fans who cry and wish doom on other clubs because they occasionally want to watch a rugby league game when they get bored with the shitfest that is afl.

I am also opposed to clubs who don't and can't contribute to the playing pool and individuals who put shit on existing clubs but are quite happy to harvest their juniors.

The NRL has an interesting split of fans. I'd say the fans that go to every game and travel would be a small percentage. I love going to a game, but I love watching a weekend of sport at home. I think the latter type of fan is more prevalent and this is why the game is focused on coverage vs game day experience.

What defines a supporter in the modern game is very subjective but if you did a pole and asked the average sport fan "Who you follow in the NRL and do you watch games at home?", I'd say it would be a drastically different figure.
The invention of 75 inch screens makes it so much more enjoyable to watch the game at home

And not have to fight through 1-2h peak hour traffic or have to leave work early

Only minus is the lack of RG or U21s coverage

Because as unfortunate as it is it wouldn't actually bring much more to the game than the PNG supporters already do

Whats the point in having a team represent an area it doesnt play in

I'd imagine your average PNG local couldn't afford to regularly fly to Cairns for regular season games and I'd assume any PNG TV rights would be worth close to nothing

PNG has major issues with its infrastructure and economy. There's no road connection between Port Moresby and PNG's other major cities. Only about 15% of Papuans have access to reliable electricity. The GDP per capita is under $5k USD. It's not a safe country to live in.

The best case scenario for PNGRFL is to field teams in the lower age divisions of the QRL.

Tigers / jets brings financial strength, more Brisbane content to boast broadcasting money. Tackles afl in key battleground just like gold coast before.

Only one bid stacks up

I wouldn’t write off Perth just yet. We know Tony Sage, Peter Cummins and Laurie Puddy are keenly interested in running an NRL club. Cummins has funded rugby league in Perth for decades.

I'd love Brisbane to have a third team, but for now I'd prefer to see the Dolphins establish an identity that generates a strong supporter base to rival the Broncos. I don't know how they're going to do it as there will always be a Redcliffe vs Brisbane divide within their potential support base.

If we want the game to grow then we will need to invest in Adelaide and Perth. It's ridiculous that we don't have teams in Adelaide and Perth.
