On Wednesday, V’landys confirmed the NRL will begin formal research into whether to add a plane to its other investments, including hotels in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Woolooware in Sydney’s south.

“It’s a very good suggestion, and it’s got enormous benefit,” V’landys said. “We discussed it [on Wednesday] and we’re definitely going to do an analysis.

“You can do promotions where you can take fans to different venues, and especially if we expand to Perth, Papua New Guinea, the south island of New Zealand or wherever, it becomes a more realistic option.”

I read that bolded part too and maybe read between the lines to see something not really there, but to mention Perth, PNG, and SthNZ in that sentence suggests that perhaps that is where they are aiming to put teams in the near future.

Might have been a slip of the tongue, but could just be pulled out of the air randomly.

Owning and operating a private jet is very expensive, it's not like owning a jetski which you can just park in your garage for the odd times you are going to need it. Think weekly maintenance, storage, staff (and not just flight staff, you can't just pick up the phone and say "Jeeves, we're headed to Townsville, start up the jet", there is a lot of organising required to book airport slots etc). Jet fuel is very expensive too.

If you're shipping teams around you're probably going to need at least 40 seats so it's a fairly large aircraft. The bigger the aircraft the greater the cost.

It's reasonable to do a feasibility study on it but I doubt it will occur. Very few sporting teams or organisations have their own aircraft, mainly the very big boys in the US, because it costs so much to operate versus using commercial or chartered aircraft.

Agree. What does the NRL know about running a jet?

What about leasing one on retainer with a discounted rate the more it's used?

Get the owner on board as an NRL sponsor, do we have one of those atm?

Just brainstorming...

I’m sure the nrl know how to do a cost benefit analysis on owning v leasing v current situation

but sure maybe they need to read this thread to know more

Time to open a '22nd team Who's next' thread, that's where it gets interesting because you'll have Fiji, Wellington and Adelaide in the hunt plus probably around that time Govt funding ending for PNG, will they be able to stand on their own two feet? Will they shut down? If it's the latter, it's a killer for the Fiji bid which leaves you with Adelaide and Wellington and the NRL might go with both for a 22 team league.

Edit: forgot Melbourne 2 which might be ready to put their hand up by then.

I like your thinking there - and Christchurch not only gives the Warriors a domestic rival & opens up another pathway for NZ talent to play here, but also brings a new dimension in venues with the fully enclosed Te Kaha & Forsythe Barr (Dunedin) stadiums in play as home grounds.

That's a factor that might spur the Australian clubs & powers-that-be to look at similar builds there.

Tigers money will probably end up helping form the western corridor team so they'll be part of #2
I can’t see it. Reasons below.

Western Corridor has some of QLD’s biggest companies especially in Toowoomba of all places. Commercially, Western Corridor into Darling Downs could “commercially and financially” sustain its own team IF big businesses were to put corporate dollars into a franchise. Think McNabs, Wagners, FKG’s etc. Western Corridor as a region doesn’t necessarily need East Tigers money.

Another point; Ipswich Jets for all their Q-Cup 1st grade failings in recent years are still developing juniors reasonably well and in volume. Pathways both in junior club land and schools under their umbrella is working.

Admittedly Tigers are slowly encroaching close to Ipswich/Jets area. Geographically, the nearest Tigers affiliated club is Flagstone Tigers (just out from Jimboomba) which is roughly 15 or so kms from Ipswich boundary. However this is more a failing from Souths Logan Magpies in streamlining Logan (it’s a big region and Maggies don’t have that much cash) than anything else.

Tigers probably have a better chance at capturing Logan tbh. They have multiple junior clubs ie Rochedale, Springwood, Flagstone etc and the strongest RL schools Mabel Park SHS & Marsden SHS under their umbrella. But to be frank Logan is a mess as far as JRL is concerned relating to which senior club rules the roost. WM Seagulls have just as many, if not more junior clubs in the area. Again, Magpies can’t service the region properly but I digress

This might change of course and Tigers might get QRL and NRL’s blessing to post up in the western corridor and bid for a license out of there but I’d be surprised if the governing bodies or East Tigers themselves would actually want to.
