I don’t think it’s hairbrained, I said as recently as yesterday that if the nrl wants to catch the afl it needs to be at twenty teams by 2033. Just the way it happens in rugby league lol. A club chairman proposes an idea at a meeting and the media run with it with a load of bs flung around it. I mean as soon as I read that the expansion would be worth $20million a year or $400mkll over twenty years I knew the quality of the article! Then couldn’t help throw the bears in but now in Pacifica lol.

Yeah I saw the $20 million bit as well. I think elsewhere it said a $2 billion year deal over 5 years, whacko, maybe that journo was saying that would be Foxtel`s contribution.

I agree - it’s a bit strange.

It is perfectly fine to be cautious about things like how is the PNG team going to be competitive or are they able to fund and probably implement this stuff in such a short turnaround but it is exciting that there is at least talk about it and that they are going to take things on head on.

Also, if you are wanting a Perth team for example this is the best opportunity they are going to probably get. You have a bloke who knows he got dudded on the last deal, who knows they need extra content without seemingly any preconceived ideas of where it is going to be and it looks it’s about money pure and simple

If it’s about the latter more than anything else then they are probably the most likely option outside of this PNG idea.

Look I’ve been advocating for a balls out strategy and to go to twenty teams for a long time. If this is it or just another false Dawn, and after so many in the last 12 years it’s hard not to be sceptical, time will tell.
IF Vlandys delivers a twenty team comp,e specially with png added, I’ll gladly praise him from the high heavens for doing something I didn’t think the nrl would ever have the balls to do.

This is just an idea put forward by politis and Vlandys has said they haven’t thought about, have no data, have no real strategy for it, but are willing to investigate it. Why they dont have that data ready yet is anyones guess After a decade of talking about expansion.
