You want an expansion side in a new big city to look professional in a modern all seater stadium - that's your point of difference to the traditional suburban and regional clubs

Especially if you're trying to get an afl fan in perth interested in nrl, dragging them from optus out to bitsa with some lipstick stadium like hbf (it's a decent enough stadium on paper sure, but nothing special), straight away their first impression of the sport will be its shit, compared to if it's to the shiny new boutique stadium next to the one they are already used to going to
Yep exactly

and the arlc demanding it isn’t a big deal given the money Perth have and what afl just achieved in Tasmania

the biggest problem with the reds was they had a bad stadium to play out of

hopefully we have learned the lesson

300 million extra for a modern stadium when they make billions in surpluses … it’s a rounding error
This then adding in the fact a centralised sporting precinct is more economically beneficial and arguably easier to maintain in the long run (in terms of singular PT lines, surrounding amenities etc) surely would be on the WA govs mind

Get people used to going to the one place for sport and youre more likely to see those people attending all of the sports

Honestly personal opinions on their game aside I'd love to see the two codes work together every now and then on something like a mini cross code magic weekend / double header / etc

It almost happens here with Anzac day unofficially but imagine if a state gov got involved and made an official muti-sport double header or full on weekend sports festival, it would be huge for an expansion team in perth for example to get a shitload of afl fans across to a game after an Eagles game.

I'm imagining a "sports festival" where you can buy day passes and gain access to nrl & afl games, maybe even other sports (soccer, basketball, netball etc) all in the one precinct. You'd get fans of all sports mingling and talking shit in pubs and bars and attending each other's games

From my experience getting them to watch / attend a game is the hardest part and most of the people I've dragged to a storm game have kept atleast somewhat an interest in the nrl afterwards (its undeniably a more entertaining product), a few have become regular supporters of their own accord afterwards

End of the day we're probably never going to be no. 1 in the afl states but if we can replicate what the Storm have done becoming everyones second team, and double down on that the benefits would be huge

unfortunately it would involve civil conversations with the afl and probably a similar event for their benefit in nsw/qld, so will probably never happen

Perth will be way easier for rugby league than Melbourne was

it was once considered the third rugby league state

having only two afl sides to compete with instead of 8 or 9 in Melbourne is easier

getting a crowd average of 15k should be easy and corporate support will be good with the wealth of the state

My point is if you can convince those afl fans to also follow league then you aren't in competition for supporters, capture the overall sports fan audience

You can go to a storm game and count the number of afl scarves to prove this point, as far as dollars are concerned it makes no difference to the club if they are also attending their afl clubs games

If I was a betting man I’d say either perth or Wellington . Could be bears in either location or stand alone.
I can see either of the places who miss out on club 18 or brisbane3, Adelaide, Sunshine Coast or outside shot PNG making teams 19 and 20 in the next decade plus.

the nrl should put up $3mil a year extra on the grant for any sydney club willing to move to gosford.

surely Christchurch would be the better pick for NZ? much better stadium for RL (when its built) and a better point of difference to the warriors (N v S island), populations are mostly same same as well

Regional clubs should get an extra 1 million pa in grant

afl states and nz should get 2 million more

same salary cap as the rest

Not really in terms of population. South Island is about 1.2 million, north is about 3.8 million.
