Cairn will be a base, wont be playing home games there as much, maybe 2-4 if that, the idea is to take this team to the islands, aswell as the bulk to Port Moresby, think of the warriors during covid, the way they were setup, yes it wasn't ideal like because thet had to work in Australia while the virus was around aswell as protocols, but a standardized set up without those restrictions in place, set up in cairns
Why would they play games in cairns?

What does bob manning get out of it, he has been campaigning for this and more tourism content for over a decade, even had been pushing a stadium too
If cairns council are fronting up a new stadium centre of excellence and a 5 star hotel for the players to hold up in then yeh they deserve some games lol

Theyll get them regardless, i dont see them getting cairns being involved and not use atleast 2 trials, maybe 1-2 nrl home games too, breaks up the travel schedule, 1-2 in fiji, 1in tonga, 1 in samoa, bulk in PNG
That should stretch out 12 home games

Qld govt are upgrading barlow park for the Olympics, not sure what exactly is involved, but its one of the 17 venues they are investing in

The world was a very different place 100 years ago.
There’s reasons why rugby league is a big sport in Australia and not England and a lot are to how the different governing bodies competed with rival football codes

taking our super league australia has an excellent record when it comes to expansion
CONTINUED:

One proposal is for the far north Queensland town of Cairns to be a full-time base for a Pasifika club, but V’landys said any PNG headquarters has not been locked in.
“At this stage, we are keeping an open mind in terms of location,” he said.
“Cairns has been mentioned, but there is not a set destination.
“We have to investigate whether a PNG team could be part of a joint venture with other entities like North Sydney Bears or the Brisbane Tigers.
“Perth is another location.
“If we were to reward someone for passion and determination, you would give it to Perth, because they have been so determined to get a side in the NRL.
An 18-team competition gives the NRL an extra bargaining chip in broadcast talks.
Not only would the NRL be able to sell a ninth weekly game to Fox and Channel 9, but V’landys believes a Pasifika franchise in the NRL can be an educational weapon for Papua New Guinea.

“It’s important for our broadcast negotiations because that would give us a ninth NRL game every week to take to the broadcasters,” he said.
“That’s the one thing the AFL has always had over us.
“They always have that extra game they can leverage to get paid for, we don’t have an extra game, but we will with 18 teams.
“We have a multifaceted plan. This is not just a benefit for the NRL. We can assist people in PNG and the Pacific in many, many ways. Sport is an amazing tool in building communities and building relationships and building hope.
“There’s 17 million people in Papua New Guinea. There’s 25 million in Australia, so when you look at it it’s a very big country and basically their religion is the NRL and rugby league.
“It’s not simply just having an 18th team. We have plans to have an education and sporting syllabus in schools in PNG, Tonga and Samoa, where rugby league will be at the top of the list for their physical exercise and we can also help academically.
“A PNG team would have kids in that nation playing rugby league, participating in sport and having a pathway to success at the elite level of the NRL.”
Asked if Australian NRL stars would be concerned about the potential dangers of living in PNG, V’landys said: “I don’t believe safety is a concern.
“We will make PNG a safer place by having this relationship.
“The locals idolise rugby league players, so the NRL can help PNG thrive as a nation.”

I find this ongoing thought of a Pacific/PNG side out of Cairns has passed the ridiculous stage. I mean come on. It was a funny outlandish idea, but seriously, what the hell is a Pacific side anyway? They only sign Pacific Islanders or PNG players? How ridiculous is that? Almost as ridiculous as having an entire team of Pacific Islanders playing home games in Australia.

The only team which should play out of Cairns are the Northern Pride and if they want a team in the NRL then they can submit their own bid.

Geez, they will be travelling alot for their 12 'home' games. Add the 12 away games which could include trips to Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Auckland. This PNG-Pasifika team will be very tired at seasons end, and probably run dead last.

If they are based in Cairns, then let's keep it as simple as possible. Firstly make it as a PNG team, not PNG-Pasifika Frankenstein type. Secondly, have all 12 home games in PNG. To cut on travelling, PNG could play 2 or 3 home games in blocks at a time. Once they complete a block of home games, they return to Cairns.

And thirdly, in the off season, the players could spend some time in PNG, like a month, to prepare for the following season.

Now that's just the football side of it.

that to me already says is an option for the nrl, but these two clubs are looking for a permanent license,
That's not going to happen, as he already stated the license will stay with PNG

He also said fiji and Tonga will be part owners too

if easts tigers are the winning location they will get ownership too

I’m strongly in favour of it being in Brisbane vs. air a it makes their finances bulletproof

Pasifika 747's.
Sponsored by Boeing.
A team that represents the Pacific ends up representing none of it.
Today were playing in Tonga for Tonga 🇹🇴 💪 next week is for the pride of fiji 💪and next week in PNG
Has to be the dumbest shit ever.

A PNG side alone is going to be like growing a plant on the moon . Every thing it needs to survive will have to be supplied.

I near guarantee that this all end with the NRL playing 1 or 2 fixtures pa in PNG with the government paying it - if we're lucky!

Like all negotiations, the opening bid is just a dream.

Which totally defeats the purpose... At that point the team isn't a PNG or Pasifika team, it's just a team that gets paid to FIFO for the odd game in PNG.

It would be better for all involved if you took the money it'd take to play those games and just pumped it into local RL in PNG instead, but that wouldn't give the pollies a ribbon to cut.

They are upgrading the lightning to Barlow Park for $4M

And even if it was getting upgraded, the Olympics is in 2032, where does this team play in the meantime?

Cairns does not have a venue capable of hosting regular NRL games, and the Feds and State will not be funding a $500M stadium for a few games of NRL for a side locals will actively not care about.

It's the stupidest idea in RL history, and everyone knows this except the Dickhead at the top, and his News Ltd sycophants.

Wouldn't the flow on be to assist that level?

NRL clubs sign kids from 15 into various program. Why would this happen?

All of the islands having improved setups would lift that standard though.

PNG Hunters especially would benefit greatly

Brisbane Easts or Bears surely have to run it. As to give it finances and a huge benefit as a start up

You're creating a false dichotomy.

You can achieve all of the above without wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayers dollars on an NRL side that's doomed to commercial failure, and it's insane that anybody would suggest otherwise with a straight face.

The only reason that development of Papuan players isn't happening on a mass scale already is because the NRL and clubs have found it hard to get visas for young Papuan players in the past, and I'm sure that it'd be much easier for Albo to deal with that problem than funding an NRL side in PNG forevermore.

I love how quickly the discussion has moved from 'PNG should have an NRL team' to "we should put another team in Sydney or Brisbane and get them to play the odd game in PNG to justify it".

We all know that a PNG side is a pipedream, so can we just move on please.

Old misery guts spewing his anti expansion bile

bagged the dolphins for months and look how they are going
Your "expansion" proposal is to put a team in every suburb of Brisbane and Sydney and I'm the one that's anti expansion lol.

Why don't you try addressing the actual argument.
