18th club, whose next?

The Bears had a few good things going for them..

1) Red & Black colors. A classic sports combo, sadly missing in the NRL.

HOWEVER - any expansion team could pick red & black to wear.

2) A pretty cool mascot.

HOWEVER - A bear isn't native to Australia or NZ, and plenty of other decent indigenous animals would make great emblems.

3) They were "Lovable losers", and everyone had a soft spot for them.

HOWEVER - Is that really the culture you want an expansion team to be saddled with?

4) They saw the writing on the wall, and tried to move before they were pushed, their return would be a righting of a tragic wrong (ie the nascent NRL not ring-fencing & supporting them in 1998).

Yeah, well, you got me there... BUT the Sydney/Central Coast market is oversaturated as it is.. for the Bears to come back, it'd have to be somewhere outside NSW.. and unless it's "take this brand or you don't get a license" from the NRL, expansion bids won't want anything to do with them, due to "HOWEVER"s 1, 2 and 3 above - AND the niggling concern that the Bears may up and leave for NSW once they're back in.
Their colour scheme is the only good thing about their bid. They're basically an unsuccessful version of Fortitude Valley Diehards. Both clubs were based just north of the CBD of their respective cities in gentrified areas without a home ground that were surrounded by bigger clubs with demographics better suited to our game.

Still convinced you create another Manly or Cronulla with that approach. Better bet would be for Dolphins to commit ten games to Suncorp and work damn hard to be Brisbanes genuine second team attracting fans from across the city.
If they were to become the Moreton Bay Dolphins and adopt the coastline along Moreton Bay, which stretches from Sunshine Coast to Gold Coast, then they could develop a large fanbase and play all 12 games out of Lang Park. It would require a link with Easts Tigers and Wynnum Maybe Seagulls to work.

Theoretically they could do that as the Brisbane Dolphins, but there has to be a link between the geographic name and moniker for the brand to be marketable. Moreton Bay and Dolphins fit nicely as dolphins live in Moreton Bay.

America usually assigns a moniker that represents the main pastime, industry or wildlife of the city it represents.

Yeah, I hope that IF NZ 2 is selected as next team, they just choose a team based in Christchurch with red & black.

Sure, it's Canterbury (Province) colors - BUT most of their games would be in Christchurch, and they could easily do "event" jerseys for games in Dunedin for instance - like how the Warriors wore black and yellow jerseys for Wellington games.

I’m surprised that somebody like siv hasn’t suggested this already.

Actually scratch that - it can only be expansion if it is in NSW (ironically)

Christchurch would be a good location for NZ 2, with Wellington pencilled in for NZ 3 when the demand is great enough.

If NZ 2 or Perth get in then hopefully they'll use red and black just to f**k with the 29 Bears fans who are still alive.

Btw I was referring to moving the Bears to Christchurch. You could tell them him it is in NSW - he would be none the wiser

The Bears are on the ropes, really clutching at straws to try and find a way back to the table.

Seriously, their latest iteration of a bid was for a "roving" team playing home games in Sydney, in the country, heck where-ever. Just daft!

All we need now is an expansion club to claim red & black as THEIR colors, using THEIR OWN logo/mascot, and being based in a new NRL market outside NSW that's got a decent catchment & great sponsorship opportunities, and the last faint hope of the Bears coming back to the NRL will be gone.

Oh how terrible was their last idea. The most inane idea ever conjured. Their only hope has ever been to try and saddle up with a bid outside of NSW.

Failing that, they have never been a chance and only idiotic retrogrades have ever thought different

great idea!

because god forbid an expansion team used the bears logo and colours bc then they would have access to juniors, fans and members in Sydney

and when they play away games in Sydney rather than having low crowds they can play at nso and sell it out

I expect we will Use red black and gold if it’s the pirates bid.

id prefer black and gold (nod to WA’s state colours) with a dash of scarlet red.

That must be the jerseys that Toomuchsoup did. They are absolute crackers. He is very talented - I also liked his Dolphins jerseys. I’d like to see his take on some other potential expansion sides (NZ 2, Adelaide, Brisbane 3 for example)

Yeh this one is my faves of the many mock ups over the last decade.

It’s a shame that some of these mock ups don’t actually become the jerseys worn by teams. For example that list of Adidas style jerseys that were shared on the Jersey, Mock Up page were absolutely fantastic - makes the actual jerseys chosen by teams look absolutely embarrassing by comparison

Yeh they are often hundred times better than the dross the manufacturers come out with and clubs agree to

I liked them also, but some of them went too far using the adidas stripes, it suited some teams, looked generic for others, the cowboys i didn't really like, but the reds was fantastic
