Interesting comments from Abdo.

18th team announced by end of 2024, and also direction for beyond 18? Good if true.

“league slipped quite comfortably ahead, due to the addition of the Canberra Raiders.

That lead has been worn down in the last few years with GWS’ success and the Raiders’ struggles.”

hahhahahaa

this goes with them taking over qld now too

camberra rugby league comes first

heck the afl thinks their sport is so small there they don’t want to put a team there and even put tasmania in ahead of them

In all likelihood the brumbies will get killed off when super rugby restructures again

you can’t sustain a full time club of crowds of 5000

Yeah, the situation with Super Rugby Pacific is interesting, and they might just be looking at expansion of their own (particularly USA & Argentina) with speculation here of bizarre ideas like relocation of Moana Pacifica to Hawaii & their Perth team being a quasi-South African side...

It'll be sad to see the Brumbies fold. They were the cream of the crop when RU meant something in this country. It shows how far the sport has fallen in 20 years.

I remember when the academic f**kwits claimed RU and soccer were set to kill off the NRL and AwFuL due to their "global" profile. The opposite has turned out to be true.

Rugby union was never much more than a niche sport in this country. The Wallabies prospered when the sport was amateur. Professionalism has left the Wallabies behind the bigger and more cashed up bodies, such as the NZRU, RFU, SARU and FFR. The Irish, Welsh and Scots are probably ahead of the ARU. The Japanese have are ahead, too. Australia's economy is too small to compete with North America, Europe and Japan.

The quasi South African side based in Perth is probably the stupidest idea I have ever heard (one of at the very least). Some of the others lik USA or the Hawaii based side are ambitious and/or far fetched but they make a bit more sense

It’s nearly as dumb as the PNG side minus government funding based in cairns joining the NRL competition.

The super rugby bid minus any government and or private funding just about tops it.

You have to love an idea of a side representing one area but basing themselves somewhere else. Or an idea targeting one specific subsect of the population to the exclusion of everybody else. Makes total sense.

It’s the classic example of trying to please everyone but ending up pleasing nobody.

Union was a real threat to the nrl in early 2000

super rugby was flying with packed houses and their World Cup was a big success

nrl was still weak from super league and the salary cap was so low they could get any player they wanted

that’s what makes its crushing defeat now so satisfying

afl is next

Brian has no problems with the Australian govt funding a fiji super rugby side but does have a problem when they do the exact same thing for a rugby league side
I couldn’t careless about the super rugby competition that is desperate for teams compared to the NRL in which space is a premium.

a PNG NRL team would be a waste of a franchise/team when we have Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane3 etc also vying for the 18th spot.
