18th club, whose next?

Brian has no problems with the Australian govt funding a fiji super rugby side but does have a problem when they do the exact same thing for a rugby league side
I couldn’t careless about the super rugby competition that is desperate for teams compared to the NRL in which space is a premium.

a PNG NRL team would be a waste of a franchise/team when we have Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane3 etc also vying for the 18th spot.

It’s not the fact that the Australian government are putting this money into the PNG side that’s the problem; it is seemingly the idea that the side is completely reliant on this funding to survive.

It’s not that hard to see the government taking that funding away in the future - government priorities change - then what happens. It’s a pretty valid question.

There is also the logistics: if you can’t base this side in PNG then that kind of defeats the purpose of the side.

No major Australian football code would be stupid enough to do that would they ?

So the argument is that because some other competition does it, our game should do it as well?

I also wouldn’t call Rugby Union a major Australian football code anymore.

But…..but the financial slack would be taken up by the mythical mining funding and…….and the team would fly into Port Moresby from cairns to play home games.

Brian the super league tv deal is worth 40 million Aussie dollars pa. That funds 12 teams

the Australian govt is putting in 60 million pa for one team

that’s the only reason the arlc is doing this

nobody in their right mind who likes league should say the arlc should turn down that money

I was talking about afl and gws

fyi Canberra isn’t part of Sydney

heck homebush isn’t even part of outer western Sydney

But you want to copy the afl in putting teams in places where their are little fans and juniors

interesting

That’s called a red herring sir. I don’t recall supporting any team that essentially bases themselves in an entirely different location to where they play.

Btw whilst GWS shouldn’t play multiple games in Canberra as it is stupid, it’s slightly different to what is being proposed here. GWS aren’t basing themselves in Canberra and playing all their games in Sydney or vice versa; whilst this side are going to base themselves in Australia because they can’t do so in PNG.

That to me is a pretty big red flag and that is not even getting into the issues of reliance on funding, very little revenue coming in and recruitment of players and other logistics.

Anyway, if they get in I hope it succeeds because we have had way too many sides die in the past.

“league slipped quite comfortably ahead, due to the addition of the Canberra Raiders.

That lead has been worn down in the last few years with GWS’ success and the Raiders’ struggles.”

hahhahahaa

this goes with them taking over qld now too

camberra rugby league comes first

heck the afl thinks their sport is so small there they don’t want to put a team there and even put tasmania in ahead of them

In all likelihood the brumbies will get killed off when super rugby restructures again

you can’t sustain a full time club of crowds of 5000

The NRL should be grateful for the Giants in Canberra.

There's a very real AFL base in Canberra and if Canberra got an AFL team, the most popular team would be a two-horse race between them and the Raiders.

But nobody gives a shit about the Giants, so as long as they keep milking Canberra, the Raiders will be the only horse in the race.

How many sides failed other than due to the super league war ?

Clubs used to get funding 1.5 million under the salary cap. Now it’s 5 mill over the cap. Just about any club will work

EXPANSION PNG will be given the green light as a stand-alone team at some stage in 2024. They will be based in Cairns but play the majority of their matches in Port Moresby.

Justin Holbrook is the frontrunner to coach the side but don’t discount a play for Craig Bellamy.

The NRL could announce the introduction of two teams but with a staggered timeline. The 19th team will be Perth with a potential alignment to the Newtown Jets. Team 20 will be a hybrid. A second team in New Zealand with a Pacific flavour which could incorporate North Sydney.

Perth Jets and Pasifika Bears sounds good to us.

Has the NRL lost its mind??

what is the fascination with dual 50/50 clubs?

Rugby league fans in Perth should be grateful the Dolphins are taking a game over there.
