Colk is evangelical in his belief of expansion, which is commendable to have such passion, but obscures reality: for example NRL aren't going to prop up teams in new markets like AFL. As ppl get older they become more shrewd to these things.

Politis, who many here respect as a pretty smart businessman, recognises the need for a national metro footprint, as have many others. It seems pretty logical to me and others that a national company would see more value in a national reach for its advertising campaign over a 2/3rd reach?
Why has Toyota consistently paid a 1/3rd more for its AFL sponsorship than Telstra has for NRL? A lot of it may be more perception than reality but wars have been waged over perception!

zero chance of that. If there was no money in it they wouldn't go there.

They have said many times the NRL want to be the top sport in the Pacific, They clearly have been told that it is worth more as a result

Particularly if you want to get Amazon, Netflix, ESPN to be players in TV rights

NBL would be next to no value for usa companies. NHL for example barely rates on cable with exception of playoffs. Interest in a league worldwide is limited.

Yeah but it is more a content thing.

NBL may be of interest to fans of a tanking team to see a high draft pick. Is only on ESPN 3 but it is cheap content for them.

Same with the A League. They buy the rights fairly cheap and gives content for a larger market. In timeslots that local leagues don't play in.
