Would Cairns locals turn up and support a PNG team? Some would turn up just to see a live game of footy regardless who’s playing but could they ever get invested?
I'm more worried about the Papua's being invested. They will be lucky to have 1 Papuan in the team and they are only in PNG for the games. Will they feel like it's actually a PNG team?

So we’re probably gonna get a team made up mostly of Australians but being called PNG and playing in a foreign kit most likely making it difficult for anybody here or there to get invested. I’d personally be calling it Cairns and make a big deal out of creating pathways for a couple of Papuan hopefuls to get a real shot at a trial or two. The main focus should be creating a genuine derby for Cowboys/Cairns fans imo. I still think NZ2 should be the 18th franchise however.

That would be a better option. We're only gonna get one shot at PNG , we need to do it right.

Cairns is way to small for a NRL team, and NQ way to small for two.

The Cowboys have trialled many a Papuan over the years, and quite a few Fijians etc.

They just haven't panned out. Regardless you could always setup those pathways with the Cowboys for a 10000th of the cost and risk.

The Cowboys have a geniune Derby, the Broncos. It's easily the biggest club game in QLD and virtually the entire NRL.

The issue with that is Cairns is way way down the list of expansion location priorities. It would be behind Brisbane 3/Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and CQ for Queensland options alone before we get to the rest of Australia & NZ.

Any new or existing team could create pathways like that anyway, especially if some incentive was offered by the NRL. We don’t need to plonk a team in an isolated city of 170k to make that happen.
