Which offers better value to the NRL and its broadcast partners?

Perth or NZ 2?

Good question, it's hard to say what Sky NZ would pay for a second NZ team.

In the NZ2 scenario, you would likely get a bump from Sky plus a bump from Australian broadcasters simply because there is an extra game to sell.

In the Perth scenario, you will only get a bump from the Australian broadcasters for the extra game.

Both have pros and cons but Perth seems to make the most sense:

- Perth is the bigger market
- NZ has more readily available talent
- Perth would probably bring more fans and members than Christchurch or Wellington
- NZ2 would draw more away fans to games in Australia (ex-pat Kiwis)
- NZ2 creates another derby in the NRL
- Perth has big money ready to back a bid (which will give the NRL confidence)
- NZ2 would be fishing where the fish are which is the NRL strategy
- Either option would put a little more pressure on RU
- Only the Perth option will attempt to take it to both RU and AFL

Fumbleball don’t have any superstars or incredible athletes. It is a strength for them in a sense that they are always going to have a steady stream of players or even with the implementation of a draft or a mandatory vaccine process (seriously what other sports could fumbleball players choose)

It doesn’t help them with regards to marketing through players

I would say Buddy Franklin helped increase the Swans profile and membership numbers, probably also number of kids wanting to play. Look what Benji did for League. I'm not a marketing expert but sticking AFL and Swans logos on milk cartons or other marketing attempts like this just associates the brand with mundane things IMO. Lots of minor sports have done this over the years and it hardly ever boosted their profile.

Your actually seeing the reverse occuring since the changes to NSW Cup, RM Cup

There has been a reimergance of the Newtown district, Mounties taking over Liverpool, Wenty, Cabramatta Hills divy up Parramatta. And a lesser extent St Marys, Blacktown and Windsir in Penrith. And Camobelltown popping up as its own entity

The districts and the NRL clubs they’re aligned with are still the same. Newtown is just a NSW Cup team, they don’t control a Newtown district, that’s been given to (mostly) Souths.

The Bears are the notable exception.

Haha look i respect any professional athlete and no doubt they work hard to condition their bodies. I am amazed at how inaccurate a lot of AFL players kick though whenever I have watched... Is the Sherrin just hard to kick?

A ton of them are basketball prospects. Nic Natinui would have played rugby union if there had been a WA pathway when he was in school. It's no good running them down, when two of league's biggest stars in Folau and Hunt crossed into the sport and failed dramatically.

Obviously the Gaelic football connection too, Gaelic players often come to Australia.

Oh it's a weird bloody thing to watch absolutely, but a lot of them are freakishly good athletes.

News today out the Gold Coast that the Suns are building an early childhood centre to cater to 200 kids at any time, next to Metricon. These are the moves the AFL makes to move into RL territory, suddenly the Suns brand becomes synonymous with kids education, your kid is 5 and starts going to the Suns learning centre, they go to school and the Suns players show up to do clinics, they go to high school and it's AFL Queensland who run all the clinics and host the SEQ Schools Cup.

The NRL needs to be pushing clubs to be more than just game day entities.

Once we hit 20 think we call it a day as far as NRL expansion goes and look to grow game through second tier.

-2 conferences, 2 games against conference rivals with one against other conference to alternate home and away by season.

A mixed finals series or "maybe" Gus's idea of seperate conference finals. Get the Sydney GF etc... I don't think the NRL will relocate a Sydney club and unless one really shits the bed its hard to see any team relocating. Especially with the way the grant is structured now to be above the salary cap.

I dare say you're right about the order of teams coming through.

But I wouldn't necessarily say that 20 is the limit on teams. We would need our audience to grow significantly to support more than 10 games a week, but it's certainly not out of the question.

It's part of a strategy though. They're already through the schools, you can call up AFL Queensland as a school and they'll supply you goal posts and equipment if you agree to enter the AFLQ Schools Cup.

They know that if you are pushing your brand from early childhood through to primary and secondary you'll net fans longterm.

No facts or stats to back my thoughts here, but my opinion is that NZ2 adds nothing at all, rather divides Kiwi support. Why on god’s green earth would another team grow the game? I don’t see the Warriors anyway dividing, turning off any fan. Better to help the Warriors be consistently high performing, I think that would do light years more than a second team..
