I don’t know about a combined PNG/PI team, all seems abit silly. The Hunters based in Cairns has some merit. If the Government coughed up for a new 15k-20k stadium in cairns it would be great for the region and League in general. 50/50 split home games between Cairns & Port Moresby. The traveling would be a killer though. But if both governments want it to happen (Aus/PNG) and are willing to spend some coin on RL, I say go for it.

Gov`t`s change, priorities change, 15 million a year for a League team in P.N.G. sure ain`t going to be a vote winner in the other half of Oz (and an almighty chunk in the States that do) and would be an easy target for an opposition spruiking budget cuts, and what happens then.
V`landy`s big thing for the Dolphins was their financial stability, especially in uncertain times, relying on Governments to fork out tens millions of dollars possibly indefinitely, ain`t financial certainty.

$15 million is a tiny %of the foreign aid budget and could be simply wrapped up into the png aid budget already in place. It is not hard to rationalise, implement and maintain. Negative responses would be in the news cycle for a day. The opposition would be hard pressed to maintain an argument about this with the China issue breathing down our necks.

I'm not a believer in PNG being anywhere near ready for an NRL team, maybe in 20 years time. But Australia give $600m a year in aid to PNG, that $15m is small fry and can probably come out of that existing aid without causing too much of a political fracas.

Channel 9 just reported new teams to be Pacifika, Qld team and the bloody Adelaide Rams!

Although the Rams shocked me at first, if people read the article there seems to be a lot of what if’s and maybe’s.

We have had Perth, Adelaide, Pasifika, QLD, a second New Zealand team all mentioned. I get the feeling that they are saying we want to get to 20 teams, give us your proposals.

We`re a funny old game, if the Dolphins had of gone 0 - 2 we`d all be crying in our cups looking for a silver lining, but a couple of wins and we`re taking on the world.
I remember when I first went on the Pommy forum a couple of years ago, (first impressions are always strongest) it was literally a roller coaster of emotions every day, quite amazing really how it would follow a pattern.

I would wait and see how this whole concussion issue is going to play out over the next few years before thinking about 20 teams to be honest... we could possibly see the end of all contact sports.

It’s a thought bubble article. The only solid takeaways are that there is a goal for the NRL to get to 20 teams with 10 years or so and that the Australian government is trying to improve ties with PNG through the NRL. The when and where of actual franchises is iffy.

But you’ve got Perth, New Zealand 2, PNG, Pacifika, Bears, Firehawks and Jets all trying to get one of those 3 spots. It’s a good way to get competitive tension in the bidding process because after 20 who knows if they’ll expand again.

First, we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin.
