The game simply doesnt have the vision but Touch and Nines would be great vehicles to introduce the game to asia. I'd think Touch would actually be the perfect sport for many asian people goven you dont need the physical size to be good at it.

As for Singapore, Union has a foothold due to the old school colonial network being so prominent in business there. You'd have to find a niche opening for League and why people would follow it. Not impossible but would need a good strategy, something NRL knows nothing about. Getting it on FTA in Singapore would be a massive first step.

You are talking about Union like it's a major sport.

It has the profile of Badminton in Australia there.

It's insane to think that Singapore has more to offer the NRL then Perth or Melbourne.

It's a f**king stupid idea to put a NRL team there, and people should feel stupid for suggesting it.

No more insane than a team for a developing nation based in an entirely different country lol

We've had 35 people represent Australia at the Olympics in Badminton :)

Do think the nrl has any idea that it's fans are agruing over expansion to Singapore?!
One look at this thread and the NRL would feel dumber for reading it...
Logan deadshit is really pushing the singapore angle today... next he'll be pushing for hugh jackman to represent his city of logan in the next olympics

20th - Christchurch

I admire your desire to do Perth & Adelaide next (nevermind Brisbane, the current Qld clubs need some time first), but NZ 2 is ready & worthwhile before PNG Darwin or Hobart.
No bidders in NZ tho,

Current Bidders are
East Tigers
PNG/aus govt
Perth/WA govt
Bears (no location, or possibly of the above)
Nothing said about NZ2 as of yet

No one said Singapore is a better location for a team than Perth and Melbourne.

Perth should be the 18th or 19th team.

There's only two bids in Australia worth considering. Perth and Brisbane 3. Adelaide is decades away from fielding a self-sufficient team and the ARLC won't fund it. New Zealand 2 doesn't offer anything to the Australian broadcasters and lacks a sizeable market to place it in. Whoever gets the nod to be the 18th team will need to appeal to the Australian broadcasters and be self-sufficient.

The bulk of the game's revenue comes from the Australian broadcasters. They will decide where the team goes. It won't by PNG, Singapore, Adelaide or NZ.

I'd love to see a RL Summer Series played between November and February. Hold eight RL Nines tournaments across PNG, Singapore, Malaysia, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia and New Zealand. It would provide valuable content to the broadcasters. Players on the fringe of the NRL could use it to showcase their talent.

I'd imagine Singapore would benefit nicely from having a team in the NRL. It would be a great way for the Singaporean government and hotel sector to advertise the city as a tourist destination to Australians and New Zealanders. Getting Touch into the school system is definitely possible. It's one of the few sports that can be played with mixed gender teams.

My odds and reasoning for who will be club 18based on what little we know

Brisbane3 - 3/5
For: safe option and we know nrl is risk adverse. Strong LC backed second tier club ready to step up. Covers the last piece of the seq region. Moves Into the area afl is targeting. Preference of tv
Against: dolphins need clear air for a few years, not growing the game, same fans who already follow the game, possible creation of the Sydney problem in brisbane with over saturation.

Decision: will come down to how safe nrl want to play it

Perth - 3/5
For: new growth market for the game in Australia’s 4th biggest and one of richest cities. Metro market and new tv time slot works for tv value. Strongest grass roots and fanbase outside traditional areas. Supportive state govt and bid team ready to go.
Against: Extra travel time for teams, stadium needs upgrade or replacing to maximise revenue opportunities, player development will take some time. Questions over financial sustainability.

Decision: Will depend on what WA govt offers and how strong a financial viability case bid team can make and if nrl want to genuinely expand the game.

Pasifika/PNG 1/5
for: RL mad country, player pool easily developed, adds to international flavour of comp, Fed govt funding, pathways on place with Hunters.
against: country is unsafe, player attraction and retention would be very difficult, financial viability tied to ongoing govt funding. No value to Australian tv.

Decision: hard to see the obstacles being overcome and the risks being acceptable to conservative nrl. Will come down to if feds offer silly money or not.

NZ2 2/5
for: opportunity to grow nrl audience, player development easier, strategically important opportunity for future of game. Stadium in Christchurch will be a stunner.
against: no apparent bid team or financial support. No obvious single location for team. Auckland2 unlikely, Wellington lacks decent stadium, Christchurch viability questionable. Little value to Australian tv.

Decision: strategy will decide this one, does the nrl genuine,7 want to develop nz? Viability and competitiveness will also be a big question given warriors variable history.

Melbourne2 0/5
just a throw away news article by Vlandys to divert some attention from tassie afl announcement.

Adelaide 0/5
For: new market for the game in Australia’s 5th biggest city. Another metro market for tv value. Rams were well supported in their brief existence.
Against: No bid, stadium needs upgrading, very small grassroots.

Decision: Very remote possibility if nrl is convinced by the 5 metro market Politis argument but more likely club 20 if so.

Wild Card: The go anywhere Bears
Could be a wildcard decider given the myopia of the arlc and Vlandys seming desire to go back to the 70’s. Bears have stated they are happy to own a club in any market, them being tagged on to one of the above may boost its favouritism with the arlc.

so that’s my take on where things sit With what we know. Of course may be lots going on behind scenes we don’t yet know. And if the nrl has a serious strategy to get to 20 clubs in next 10 years then that could change thinking on club 18 decision.

so far re. Bids we know
WA govt funding a bid development to tune of $500k and Cumins has a consortium ready to bid With strong ties to NRLWA and Pirates brand.
Unknowns will Puddy or Sage also want to bid?

PNG has a bid team developing their bid.
unknowns: how will the pasifika element and proposed Australian location influence club ownership. Will nrl want to keep control of club given accountability for govt funding?

NZ2 no recent confirmation of an active bid team, Chalmers only one so far to come forward but wasn’t very specific on a bid.
unknowns: will the usa consortium who tried to buy warriors be interested? Location of club may see other bids co e out of woodwork.

Brisbane Tigers formally announced bid intention if given opportunity.
unknowns: will Ipswich and other local clubs Jon with them to create genuine southern brisbane club?

Bears happy to go anywhere And will no doubt bid either in partnership with someone or on own if given opportunity
unknowns: will the bears back off their non negotiables to be more attractive a partner?

I'm sceptical about the NRL spending all this time on the USA pipe dream when they haven't even managed to bring in WA to make the competition national within Australia first. But if it works then full credit to him.
Make no mistake this isnt about growing the game in usa. It’s about trying to get a stronger tv presence for the sport leading to more betting interest and gambling revenue. If the ROI pays off given the cost and time spent on it we shall see. Meanwhile no cba and no international calendar still!

I'd like to know if the Brisbane Tigers are interested in relocating to Perth!

Having Perth all to themselves, with a strong Leagues Club in Coorparoo and the Brisbane Tigers in the Queensland Cup, might be more financially stable than sharing Brisbane with the Broncos and Dolphins. Old time Brisbane Tigers fans would still get to see them play in SEQ a few times each year.

I cannot see them doing it TBH, but it would help get a second BRL club into the big time and secure a team in Perth with its links to Easts Leagues Club. The gold and black of Brisbane Tigers fits in perfectly with Western Australia.

TBH, I think the networks will want a third Brisbane team for the ratings it'll provide in SEQ. If Team 18 is brought in early then it's best to give the licence to the Brisbane Tigers because they have the resources to overcome a slow start. A team in an expansion area like Perth should be given a few years and concessions to build a strong squad that can compete from day one.
