To be honest, I think a bid (or bids?) may emerge from NZ as soon as the NRL officially calls for bids - especially if the NRL mentions NZ as a place they'd like to look at.

Mind you.. given that the move from 17 to 18 teams is pretty much inevitable, it's implied that a decision will need to be made soon - and the more up-front bids (Brisbane Easts, Bears, West Coast Pirates especially) are getting their names "out there" well ahead of any formal call-for-bids from the NRL

I'm sceptical about the NRL spending all this time on the USA pipe dream when they haven't even managed to bring in WA to make the competition national within Australia first. But if it works then full credit to him.

Bidders would pop-up in NZ if the NRL were to make a declarative statement about their intent to expand in NZ. Who knows what the quality of those bids would be like, but there'd be people in NZ interested if they thought the the NRL was genuine about expanding in NZ.

The NRL wouldn't necessarily need bidders and private owners to expand in NZ anyway. They could make it happen themselves if they really wanted it to happen.

I've warmed considerably to the idea of another NZ team sooner rather than later. It just seems like the NRL and Warriors are hotter in NZ at the moment than they have been for a very long time, and that it'd probably be a good idea to strike while the iron is hot. The NRL announcing that the 18th team will be in NZ sometime within the next year could help keep that hype train going, and give the sport a much needed boost in NZ.

For: new market for the game in Australia’s 5th biggest city. Another metro market for tv value. Rams were well supported in their brief existence.
Against: No bid, stadium needs upgrading, very small grassroots.

Decision: Very remote possibility if nrl is convinced by the 5 metro market Politis argument but more likely club 20 if so.

The longer the NRL leave Adelaide the more difficult and expensive it will be.

It'll be a big mistake if Adelaide aren't given a team within the next 10ish years. It's like the Storm, or Swans and Lions for that matter, the league just needs to bite the bullet and do what has to be done to make it work. It's probably going to be expensive and time consuming to get the team up and established, but the cost of not having any local presence in the 5th largest market in the country will be even greater in the long term.

RL and the NRL needs to stop making excuses about WA and SA and just sack up and get it done.

I was in Melbourne over the weekend, I couldn’t believe the change since i was there last (maybe 2018)

NRL on in every bar, and even a good number on jerseys around.

It seems like a lot of work and a lot of risk for a low reward…

At least perth has some potential, but Adelaide would just be a dot on the map.

Ive said before, I think we would be better off looking at cities in SE Asia; we would be starting with a similar level of existing interest as a VFL State but with much greater potential.
- bigger tv/sponsor markets, bigger populations (not yet middle-class, so the national sport is not set in stone)
And if it works, there at 10 more cities to look at.

Going to Adelaide is giving up and declaring there is nowhere else to grow (*cough* VFL in Tas)
