Which established NRL player would sign for them?

How successful would a PNG side with no locals in it be marketing wise? And none likely for years.

It's mind boggling how shit this idea is, and it's only so called positive is "da gubmint gives us money".

What happens when the inevitable happens and that government funding is redirected? None of the answers to that question are good.

Labour are trying to use the NRL as a tool to appease corrupt oligarchs, and that's not the NRL's job, it isn't in their interest, and it will end in tears sooner or later with the NRL being the ones left to pick up the pieces.

The NRL are idiots if they allow themselves to be used that way, but I guess PVL et al. don't really care, as they'll get all the accolades in the short term while future generations are left to pick up the pieces.

Chill

Canberra and Townsville didn't need to be 100% underwritten by the government, they both have populations that can actually afford to buy NRL products, there's broadcast value to them, they don't have to contend with any of the serious social issues that PNG has, and they didn't run the risk of causing a serious international incident if they were to struggle or fold.

A PNG side will end up struggling and almost certainly folding when the government funding is redirected, and it's only a matter of time before that happens. Given PNG's corruption issues I wouldn't be surprised if significant amounts of that government funding disappears as soon as it reaches PNG anyway...

BTW, unless you're planning on selling tickets for AU$1-2 and running matchdays at a massive loss, your 100k stadium would end up over ¾ empty on average with only the upper-class of PNG society capable of regularly attending.
Meanwhile most of the population lives in abject poverty, 50% of Papuan kids suffer stunted growth from malnutrition, most of the population doesn't have access to clean water and electricity, the average Papuan doesn't have access to most of the basic amenities you take for granted, etc, etc...

There's no broadcast value in Canberra. Ask afl

I’m still pondering how on earth they will build a team. Would you want to live in port Moresby, or cairns and have to fly long distances for your games EVERY week? Where’s the appeal in that?
Maybe they’ll have to have salary cap dispensations?

Lol, Perth is a huge away trip too

It's not the same situation, RL was not their major sport.

A more appropriate comparison would be a QLD team with no QLDers in it. It would go down like a lead balloon.

Noone in PNG could afford to buy merchandise either. I mean the cost of a jersey alone would be some people yearly wage.

But the real kicker is the political shitshow that this sets off, tax payer dollars funding Brandon Smith new Audi. Albo will get his arse kicked all over Australia about this.

This is a typical Government move, put a new <insert building, position, team> in an area and everything will be rosy and the problem is solved.

That Darth V'landys has hitched on is not a great surprise as he's easily seduced by the sweet sweet money.

Nobody cares about that.

Super rugby have pacifika teams. Seems like a lot of xenophobia.

So for this to happen:

Government has to guarantee 25 million minimum pa for 50 years.
(Minimum).
I haven't seen anything on the news about that being put to policy and it is political suicide. The moment it's mentioned it will be shut down.
Australian's are struggling and you want to pay for a football team?
Come on.
I think at this stage it's lip service to keep the option open.
