18th club, whose next?

Only one legitimate option? And you wonder why people call you a dumbarse.

Prove me wrong or go away.

Phil Gould is on record saying is the only legitimate option in Australia for the 18th licence.

Is Phil Gould a dumbarse?

There are no legitimate bids from New Zealand. That rules them out.

The only bids we know of are the Brisbane Tigers, Ipswich Jets, a Perth-based consortium and a dumb PNG team that will be based in Cairns and funded by the Aus Gov.

If you think PNG is a "illegitimate option" then you're a dumb arse. No one will want to live in PNG, hence the reason this Frankenstein club will be based out of Queensland. Super Rugby has a similar concept and it draws terrible attendances and gets flogged every week. If we follow their example then we're inviting disaster into our game.

The broadcasters will not pay anything for a PNG team. Only 15% of Papua New Guineans earn a wage. A whopping 85% of Papua New Guineans do not have access to electricity. PNG is one of the poorest and most violent countries in the world.

You don't offer any value to these threads. You're overly emotional and only see what you want to see. When I showed you the comments from the Head of Strategy. WWOS you incorrectly assumed he was a biased local employee who doesn't speak for the network.

During breaks in the on-field action, Mediaweek caught up with Head of Nine Queensland, Kylie Blucher, and Head of Strategy WWOS, Simon Fordham.

...

For Fordham, making the most of this momentum looks like bringing more games to the region – and potentially another team.

Fordham: “We’re really committed to working with the NRL in growing the competition, and Queensland is a big part of that. We think there’s room for another team here in Queensland, and the Dolphins have been the perfect example.

The more games we can get played featuring Queensland teams in Southeast Queensland, the better. The engagement in rugby league here is just next level, and the energy of the crowds has a material impact on the quality of the broadcasts that we make. It helps create atmosphere, it makes the commentary team rise, it makes the production team rise.”

The city is covered with the two clubs it has. it doesn’t need another one. And the nrl certainly doesn’t. That’s not to say another one couldn’t survive and be a sustainable club in same way there’s nine clubs in Sydney but it’s not needed.
We need to grow the game, we need new markets, new fans, new sponsors new audiences. The game has spent too long consolidating, time to expand.

I understand you want a team in Perth. It doesn't change the fact Perth offers no commercial value to the game and will rely on the NSWRL, NZRL and QRL for players. It's not up to the NSWRL, NZRL and QRL to prop up a team in Perth.

It's wrong to say Brisbane 3 will be no bigger than a Sydney team. The Dolphins are already bigger than all Sydney clubs.

Brisbane Tigers will generate more revenue from sponsorship and corporate hospitality than a Perth-based team. It won't even be close. Brisbane Tigers will be playing 12 home games out of the world's best rugby league stadium with superior facilities. Its attendances will be bigger than Perth Oval's capacity. It'll receive strong media coverage in a rugby league city.

A Perth-based team will forever be behind the Eagles and Dockers in the media. It might sneak ahead of the Force, but it could trail behind them because the Perth market prefers RU over RL.

The game isn't going to fund expansion. The only reason PNG is being taken seriously is because Albanese is willing to throw $200m at it over 10 years. The WA Gov haven't even bothered to upgrade Perth Oval to NRL standard. That's despite it having two tenets. The NRL knows the Queensland Gov will always pitch in to support its NRL teams.

A Perth-based team will offer nothing but headaches for the Aus and NZ broadcasters. Ratings in Perth for Thursday and Friday games will be minimal for Ch9 because they'll be up against the local 6pm news bulletin. The Sunday Ch9 game will be televised into Perth at 2pm.

It's hard for people to understand just how engrained Rugby League is in PNG culture. It isn't just A sport. It is THE sport. Every little village has multiple teams. 10,000 players might be in the formalised competitions but I'd estimate that the vast majority of PNG males are playing at least a couple of games of rugby league each year in some form or another. Honestly, with that size potential player pool, if you put money into talent identification and training, you can get a full squad that can beat the best in the NRL.

Just remember that only about 1,000,000 people in PNG have a TV in their house. A lot of villages can't even get signals because of the mountains. That said when people watch Origin etc there's usually a 30+ people around the one set. I've seen it firsthand.

85% of PNG households don't have access to electricity. The GDP per capita is $3,500. Only 15% of people are actively employed.

It's probably worse than that as there are remote sections of the country where it's hard to accurately gauge the true population. But like I said there's about a million people with TVs. We have solid numbers on this because the country went through a digital conversion recently. Of the people who are employed though, there's more than enough to pay for merchandise and tickets and most of them live in Port Moresby. The GDP per capita is an average in a country with extremely high inequality. Where the wealth is accumulated, a season ticket to a PNG NRL team would be the number one entertainment ticket in town because it's effectively the only entertainment ticket in town.

Just opinions dickhead.

I'm not the one playing the man instead of the ball. Personal insults are the last resort of people who don't have a counterargument.

The "opinion" of the Head of Strategy WWOS" is quite important because they are one of the game's broadcast partners.

If he made a statement like this about Perth then you would be using it as proof that Perth will get the next team. A few weeks ago you were babbling about Perth getting the next team because they promoted the double header at Perth Stadium.

I'll add that the opinions of Phil Gould and Fordham are based on data that supports their stance. Brisbane Broncos and Redcliffe Dolphons generated strong crowds and attendances at Lang Park that provided great ratings for Ch9. That's not an opinion. That's a fact that drives you crazy because no other bid can surpass it.
Revenue from football operations was very strong for Dolphins and Broncos. In fact, the Broncos increased their membership base and attendances. Dolphins averaged 32k at Lang Park with 30k members. A Perth-based team won't get close to that. Neither will NZ2.

Vlandys wants to add three teams but potatoe Head thinks Brisbane is the only option.

V'landys is contemplating the idea of adding 3 teams after it was proposed by Nick Politis. It's not carved in stone. I'll add that Politis reckons the Ipswich Jets and Brisbane Tigers should get two of those licences.

Port Moresby only has 400k people. There's no roads connecting Port Moresby to major cities like Lae.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to this proposal from Albanese should the referendum backfire on him. The "No" case is leading in the polls by a significant margin. I wouldn't be surprised to see Albanese demoted to the backbench before the next election.

It’s the same dumb mentality that’s over saturated Sydney And kept rugby league locked into two states for most of its existence.

Neither of the brisbane rl clubs are as big as the two perth afl clubs yet you don’t hear sensible people calling for a third afl club in perth because the other two are popular!

broncos and dolphins still have a lot of growth to do before I’d even look at at a third club in brisbane. especially as you have other markets with zero nrl presence at this time.

Roosters’ CEO Nick Politis told The Daily Telegraph the 18th franchise could go to either of the expected failed bids, the Firehawks or the Jets.

“We should have two new clubs in Queensland,” Politis told The Telegraph.

The fact is Perth does not have the infrastructure to support an NRL club unless it saddles up with the QRL or NSWRL and is successful on the field.

What makes you think the QRL would support a Perth-based bid over one of its own teams?

The media doesn't want a team from Perth.

Ch9 wants another team in Brisbane.

I don't like Perth's chances of getting a team. They've got zero support from the broadcast players and are up against stronger bids from Brisbane and PNG.

The only way I can see Perth getting a team is if they acquiesce the demands made by the North Sydney Bears or Newtown Jets.

I'd give the dolphins 5 years of free air before bringing in another Brisbane team. I believe there is room for another.
But to claim its the only option? Ridiculous. You'd get more sense from a flat eather.
