18th club, whose next?

Roosters’ CEO Nick Politis told The Daily Telegraph the 18th franchise could go to either of the expected failed bids, the Firehawks or the Jets.
“We should have two new clubs in Queensland,” Politis told The Telegraph.

The fact is Perth does not have the infrastructure to support an NRL club unless it saddles up with the QRL or NSWRL and is successful on the field.

What makes you think the QRL would support a Perth-based bid over one of its own teams?

The media doesn't want a team from Perth.

Ch9 wants another team in Brisbane.

I don't like Perth's chances of getting a team. They've got zero support from the broadcast players and are up against stronger bids from Brisbane and PNG.

The only way I can see Perth getting a team is if they acquiesce the demands made by the North Sydney Bears or Newtown Jets.
We have to go to 20 teams and we have to go to Western Australia. We need more content and to make it a truly national sport, not just one played on the East coast."- Nick Politis

It’s the same dumb mentality that’s over saturated Sydney And kept rugby league locked into two states for most of its existence.

Neither of the brisbane rl clubs are as big as the two perth afl clubs yet you don’t hear sensible people calling for a third afl club in perth because the other two are popular!

broncos and dolphins still have a lot of growth to do before I’d even look at at a third club in brisbane. especially as you have other markets with zero nrl presence at this time.

You really have no idea of rugby league in Australia. You're guilty of conflating Sydney's problems with Brisbane, despite the latter not hindered by poor attendances or low revenue from football operations. A third Brisbane team is in no way comparable to the nine in Sydney. Deep down you know this because you've seen the annual reports from the clubs. You only have to look at the annual reports and attendances generated by the Broncos and Dolphins to know they're lightyears ahead of the Sydney clubs -- and the Melbourne Storm -- when it comes to generating revenue from football operations.

Whether you like it or not, the game is only strong in Queensland and NSW.

Adding teams to Adelaide and Perth won't make the game strong in those cities. Fumbleball is way too ingrained in their culture. I talk with people who've lived the bulk of their lives in Perth. They're rusted on AFL fans and are against an NRL team.

It's delusional to think a Perth-based team will be much bigger than one of Sydney's smaller clubs. If they're a disaster on the field, which is a strong possibility given the difficulties they'll face recruting players, then the club could have fewer active supporters than Cronulla. Albeit without the luxury of drawing on gaming revenue.

The Storm were gifted a strong team when three teams folded at the end of 1997. Despite a golden run on the field, their attendances are terrible compared to the Broncos and Dolphins. They needed News Ltd and ARLC to provide an extra $100m (beyond what they generated from football operations) to maintain a winning team. Sustained on field success has generated a moderate fanbase of 16k attending games at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Perth won't have this luxury. It's not out of the question for Perth to attract an average of 12k to its games. It could attract more. Possibly less. We won't know until it has a team.

Brisbane 3 will most likely attract 20-35k fans per game and generate way more revenue than a team based in Perth. If it's dumb to add a third Brisbane team -- that'll be richer than most clubs and draw two or three times as many fans as a team from Perth -- then wouldn't it be insane to add one in Perth?

The ARLC isn't going to ignore Brisbane and add Perth just because you and @Bukowski believe you're entitled to have a team that will offer little to the game and rely on the QRL and NSWRL for talent.

How did the RFL's expansion into London and Toronto go?

Did your club roll over so a team that no one wants could be added to NYC?

Port Moresby only has 400k people. There's no roads connecting Port Moresby to major cities like Lae.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to this proposal from Albanese should the referendum backfire on him. The "No" case is leading in the polls by a significant margin. I wouldn't be surprised to see Albanese demoted to the backbench before the next election.
185k in Townsville, as you've said they do alright, dont bring up numbers if you not willing to defer to you own cowboys geographical spread

I'd give the dolphins 5 years of free air before bringing in another Brisbane team. I believe there is room for another.
But to claim its the only option? Ridiculous. You'd get more sense from a flat eather.

Go tell that to Phil Gould. He reckons Brisbane is the only city in Australia that can support the 18th team.

Why do you think that is?

Phil Gould is not an idiot. He's been involved in professional rugby league for 40 odd years. Few people have been more successful than him. He knows howa to run club.

What makes you think your opinion is better than his?

The next team will probably enter the NRL in 2027 or 2028. That's more than enough time for the Dolphins.

Here's what Kate Jones said.

“I have a lot of empathy for the fact that rugby league has an Ipswich connection and that area is our heartland,” Jones said.

“We have to always make sure we keep our heartland in our decision making. We won’t rush decisions. We are ambitious, but we will make sure we do this sustainably and we do it in consultations with the clubs.

“We are going to look at all options, but as I have said in the past and as the chairman (V’landys) reiterated today, Pasifika is very strongly in our mind.

“The Federal Government is very keen to see that expansion and want to put their money where their mouth is. We also have 50 per cent of our players from Pacific nations, so that’s a great talent base.”

Jones said there was “no reason why in the future we can’t have 20 teams”.

“Our goal is to be a truly national competition and that means expansion,” she said.

“It won’t be at the expense of existing teams. We want to grow sustainably, so it will take time, but we are investing in the pathways to create the talent to keep our game strong.

“I think Peter said 2027 (for the 18th team to be added). He will be restlessly devoted to growing the game.”

As i confirm this is mostly true, but at the same time the arlc are still open to having Wa involved as the media will always wonder why NRL dont value a potential city in perth, there is plenty to gain from having a player pool created in the western australian state, their problem has always been about securing enough excess of the player pool to service a perth franchise in its infancy, before handing over a licence, they need places like NZ and the P.Is setup in pathways aswell as making sure every club is creating their own before heading far west

Tribal warfare broke out in PNG just a few weeks ago. Four men in the back of a utility truck dragged three naked men with rope tied around their ankles. Half a dozen naked men's bodies were sprawled on the grass near a river. A large crowd of men armed with machetes stood around them.

The Australian reports that the PNG Gov is struggling to provide basic services to its population. Adding an NRL team to the country while its people are starving and killing one another over limited resources is a recipe for disaster.

Phil Gould's blunt answer on his podcast when asked if it should be Perth, PNG or a second NZ team next in the NRL:

"Brisbane"

When quizzed on the options presented in the original question he made these comments:

NZ - "eventually, but not yet. They aren't ready for one yet"

Perth - "perhaps, they'd be the third option for me"

PNG - "under serious consideration because the Governments are involved"

Only issue I have with that is if junior talent is the only thing stopping a Perth team then how the hell are Melbourne in the competition? 25 years in the league and only produced 2 Victorian players. For all of the Storm's success who needs another Queensland team when Melbourne pretty much are a Qld team.

25 years if News Ltd owned influence, cash top ups for a decade at the start of it, and a reluctance from the head of the NRL to action on Melbourne actually creating their own juniors, but thats now in the past, and this current ARLC are hellbent on making every club not only viable, but to ensure each of them are cultivating their own juniors

you’ve made an awful lot of assumptions and guesses in there. And Perth isn’t melbourne, rugby league has always been much stronger here than in Victoria. We just had 45k turn out for nrl Ffs!

You obviously weren’t around in the early 90’s when The game was strong in perth? It will never be #1 in perth but can still be strong. Saying I don’t understand the game here when you are so blatant.y ignorant of rugby league In The west is laughable.

as for brisbane, no one’s arguing a third team wouldn’t be a decent sized club but there is a law of diminishing returns as is seen in Sydney The more clubs you squeeze into a city. And it comes down to does nrl need new markets or just keep consolidating existing ones.

but at the end of the day it really is a philosophical position, do you believe rugby league should be trying to grow into new markets and spread the game or do you believe it should stick to where it is historically strong and not be worrying about growth into new areas. You and I clearly differ in what we believe is best for the game long term, and that’s ok.

for me I’d like to see the nrl grow a pair and bring in:
West Coat Pirates
Oceana Orcas (out of wellington and playing 6 games in png if govt will fund it)
Adelaide bears

That sets up the nrl for new market growth for the next 30 years.

TBf there’s been different people advocating for different expansion ideas for years now. Just in last 12 months we’ve had dolphins ceo and coach, Brohman, politis etc advocating for perth, Gould and politis advocating For brisbane3, johns and others advocating for png, different commissioners advocating for pretty much everyone! I wouldn’t hold any stock in any of them. End of day nrl and it’s tv partners will determine where’s next based on risk, funding and where they strategically want to take the game over the next two decades.

I suspect the decision around 18 or 20 clubs will also play a major part in who club 18 will be. hopefully when they’ve stopped fcking around on their Vegas junkets they can turn their attention to so called ‘turbo charging’ expansion decisions!
