Adding more teams just to try and suffocate other codes is a bad strategy. Sydney has 9 teams but it hasn't stopped the Swans from being the most attended and highest sponsored club in the city. The Swans success has little to do with taking over areas where there are no NRL clubs and very much to do with RL's failure to appeal to the upper and upper middle classes. You could put another 3 teams in Brisbane and it won't have much of an effect on the Lions. The QLD media might have more RL stories than before but the Lions won't lose support, nor will kids stop playing AFL. It's just very fanciful to think more RL teams and more RL content will fight off other codes. This is why the NRL desperately needs to get into new markets because trying to push out its competitors will never work.
You ignored the other and most important reason I highlighted... to grow with an expanding heartland. And yes if you can make life hard for the opposition in the mean time and waste their money great.

Swans, Giants, Suns and Lions aren't getting another SL war gift. Lions and Swans have stagnated since then in terms of TV and game day attendance. Giants and Suns will always struggle

Yep. Being reactive is a losing strategy. Build new markets is the way forward. All the evidence is that qld is ours. Let’s take a chunk of WA please.

People of Ipswich and Logan will always see them as the inner city club they are though. Unless they move from Langlands to Springfield which is unlikely

Interesting times for RL in Logan. We've now got the Souths Logan Magpies based at Logan Metro Sports Park in Heritage Park. The LCC is investing in its facilities.

Tigers cover the eastern suburbs and Magpies are now in the western suburbs.

In order for the Brisbane Tigers to work they will need to affiliate themselves with the Magpies and Jets.

The Souths Logan Magpies have found their new nest and are ready to swoop.

The club is set to play its first game at Logan Metro Sports Park this Saturday (March 18), thanks to a partnership between Logan City Council and Queensland Rugby League (QRL).

Council’s premier Heritage Park venue is set for revival as a flagship rugby league facility under the stewardship of the new leaseholders.

The QRL’s exciting game plan for the venue will build on the City of Logan’s proud reputation as a junior rugby league powerhouse.

Clubs in Logan have produced the likes of:

Former Kangaroos, Maroons and Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith
Samoa World Cup, Maroons and Canberra star Josh Papali’i
Former Australian and Queensland representative and Bronco Corey Parker.
Australian and Queensland representative and NRLW Premiership player Tallisha Harden
The main field at Logan Metro is the same size as the playing surface at Suncorp Stadium, the home of State of Origin.

The Magpies kicked off their 2023 season with a strong Round 1 result under their new head coach Karmichael Hunt, who is a rugby league and rugby union international who also had a stint in the AFL.

The multi-field complex is also the new home ground for the Browns Plains Bears RLFC.

School rugby league carnivals will be held at the venue, which will also facilitate new talent pathways for local players, coaches and referees.

Mayor Darren Power said rugby league has proud traditions in the City of Logan.

“Our city is a proven breeding ground of rugby league talent and this new arrangement ensures that will continue,” Cr Power said.

“The next generation of rugby league legends will get to hone their skills in their own backyard.”

The partnership will see Logan City Council invest in facilities and opportunities in support of the QRL’s activation of the Logan Metro Sports Park.

QRL CEO Rohan Sawyer acknowledged the support of Logan City Council.

“We’re extremely proud of this partnership and the many benefits it will deliver to the Logan community in the years to come,” Sawyer said.

“We know how much rugby league means to people in communities right across Queensland, which is why we’re thrilled to partner with Logan City Council to provide another safe and inclusive space for rugby league participants.

“This particular project strengthens rugby league talent pathways, a key component of the QRL’s recently released Infrastructure Strategy. Logan already has a proud history of producing NRL players and it’s exciting to think about the array of talent coming through the area via the Browns Plains Bears and Souths Logan Magpies.”

City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said the reimagined Logan Metro was another example of Council making sport more accessible to local athletes and their families.

“We are delighted to support the development of a sporting facility that will allow clubs like South Logan Magpies and the Browns Plains Bears to stretch their wings,” Cr Koranski said.

“We are also looking forward to the venue becoming a place where rugby league can be enjoyed and celebrated by the entire City of Logan community, starting with the Magpies’ first home game this weekend.”

Division 8 Cr Jacob Heremaia said that Heritage Park residents join the rest of the Logan community in welcoming the redevelopment of Logan Metro.

“This partnership is a boost for not only the passionate rugby community in Logan, but its local residents who will benefit from the reinvigorated facility,” Cr Heremaia said.

“Logan Metro is more than just a top-of-the-line facility, it is a home and a heart for sports in our community."

The redevelopment of the facility comes following extensive community consultation on the project led by Council’s Advisory Committee which included Councillors Jon Raven, Tim Frazer and Scott Bannan alongside the Mayor and Councillor Koranski.

Hunt, whose love of league began as a junior Souths player, hopes the Magpies’ move will inspire future City of Logan champions.

“It’s a great facility for us as a community club and a semi-professional one, to have all this field space and the gym access,” Hunt said.

“It’s nice to bring our whole operation to Logan… (and) have a presence in the community that we represent.”

Logan Metro Sports Park is at 357 Browns Plains Road in Heritage Park.

Not necessarily, the Ipswich Council was working with the state government to pledge a stadium for the Jets if their bid got up.

If they played at Suncorp 100% they'd still be the third best attended and viewed team in the NRL helping pull the averages and finances of the league up for everyone else.
Not if it’s Ipswich jets, whose treking to Suncorp from Ipswich? If they’re going to be a southern brisbane it needs a neutral brand that attracts fans from all the southern suburbs and western corridor of brisbane and beyond.
and not just another sht “the”.

For years the "expansionists" of LU predicted doom and gloom for the Dolphins.

Dolphins entered the competition and proved them wrong on all fronts.

Now they're doing the same for Brisbane 3.

But if anyone dares to play devil's advocate and question the viability of a Perth-based team then the same sooks throw a hissyfit.
You’re talking bs again.
In fact what we were saying has very much become true! Any second brisbane club was going to be succesful . The city’s been crying out for a second team for 25 years.

What we were saying is giving it to an exiting club brand with a very clear Redcliffe focus playing part time at suncorp would not furnish the whole of brisbane with a second club.

And lo and behold just a few months after introduction people started calling for a southern brisbane club, literally validating what we said all along!

ask yourself, if easts and have got the license and come in as south brisbane firehawks playing all games at suncrorp do you think there would have been immediate calls for Redcliffe to be admitted as brisbane3?

Yes, I'd imagine we'll end up with something that is new as you've got the Magpies representing Logan but with no money, the Jets representing Ipswich but with no money, and Easts with money representing neither area

How can I take you seriously?

You defended Hull FC and Hull KR playing in the Super League, arguing they service different sides of a small city. Hull has 260k residents spread over 71.5km2.

We now know you think a small city of 260k needs two clubs to service its residents.

So why are you arguing that a large metropolitan area -- stretching 15,842 km2 from Moreton Bay in the north to Logan in the south and Scenic Rim in the west with a population of 2.6m people -- can be adequately serviced by two clubs?

The irony is you're on record saying that the bulk of a team's active fanbase live within a 25km radius of its stadium.

Using your logic we will need more than two teams in Brisbane.

Brisbane's 2.6m population is 10 times greater than Hull's 260k.

I’ve lost track of the Western Corridor / Ipswich Jets + Brisbane Bombers bid. Did the combine dissolve when they missed out for Bris 2?

You said the same thing about Brisbane 2. The Dolphins were the second best attended club in the NRL in 2023.

No matter who became the second Brisbane team, it was going to be criticised by the "expansionists".

After all the bluster I've heard from the Perth advocates about Western Australians being parochial, rich and supporting all of their teams in massive numbers -- plus the "enormous" support for the game that's based on Google Trends data -- I'll be expecting the Pirates to draw 40k at Perth Stadium with a member base of 50k. If a Perth-based team doesn't bring the next NRL broadcast deal in line with AwFuL's then it will make a mockery of everything Perth Red has said over the last year.

My God, they're two different leagues, two different countries, two different circumstances.

Can we please move on from this?!

We should ignore this glaring double standard because it doesn't support the expansion narrative he's been spinning for years?

So it's "okay" for Hull and the ESL to break all the arbitrary rules that the expansionists on LU created for Brisbane 2 and the NRL?

No!

It's not just his double standard on Hull. Despite complaining about the Western Reds having to foot the flight and accommodation bills of their opponents in 1995, the ESL did the same with the Toronto Wolfpack. He defended the axing of the Wolfpack.

He wants the ARLC to make concessions for Perth, yet he defends the RFL for not doing the same with Toronto.

Geez you are thick, you cant compare SL and nrl. They are hugely different in revenue needed to run a Club. Brisbane has 2 clubs. Seq 3. Come back in Ten years when we’ve got none serviced markets up and running.

perth, nz2, Adelaide. Then we can look at brisbane3 in 15- 20 years for club 21. As long as mugs are still feeding pokie machines Easts will still be around then Or Ipswich may have found some mOney and a stadium.

Why do you think Adelaide and Perth are so important?

I've seen you predict doom and gloom for the NRL unless it expands to Adelaide and Perth within the next ten years. You haven't provided any evidence to back up your claim.

Media analyst Colin Smith said the NRL should ignore Adelaide and Perth.

You're going to have to accept that the game doesn't need a team in Perth. We don't even know if a Perth-based team will be financially viable. The last one they had went broke.

who is actually arguing that Hull should have 2 teams? if you wanted a well spread out comp in the UK you wouldn't have half the current Super League teams. You would have a few teams in London, 1 in Birmingham, 1 in Manchester, 1 in Liverpool, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle etc but half these cities don't play League and SL doesn't have the money or reach to expand into any of them.

Hull, has 2 teams, brisbane has 2 teams. Happy days. No need for three in either city, for now.

I
same reason politis does: metro reach and national prominence. Growing new fans and new markets. More money and more fans. Simples really.

not to mention in perth at least there is a reasonable sized hardcore rugby league community that should have a local club to follow. it’s pretty selfish when you have two clubs to follow and another 1 hour away to be asking for third when a sizeable amount of other rugby league fans don’t have any.

Adelaide is a totally different kettle of fish. Harder and will take longer, that’s why I think aBears relocation there may be the only option for a club in the next 30 years in SA.

No different to nrl, you wouldn’t have nine teams in one city and be advocating for three in another if you were starting fresh. What we have is due to historic positioning of where the game has been strongest. Couple that with rl’s myopia and mostly total inability to grow into new markets and voila.
