Well going by the media reports every station and his dog was going for that other sport. If thats not true then I will happily take it back. I personally feel that the deal was done too quickly, and going by PVL's comments it seems he bought into the Fox narrative.
I do honestly hope i"m wrong.

I don't doubt they spoke, I doubt how keen they were.

Take Stan/Ch9. How does 9 do both?

I imagine if Ch7 was going for NRL one of the 1st questions would be. Who gets preference on Friday night?

No way does say Storm v Broncos get more publicity then 2 big AFL clubs on that same night.

I would need to look at the timelines but I remember 9 and 7 going for Olympics and Tennis at that time, Both of whom ch9 got.

Tin foil hat has me thinking that was leaked to make ch7 pay overs to put them out of the running for that.

The News Limited hacks stalk PVL non stop and reported a few lunches he had with ch7 exces, So who is to say the rights weren't discussed behind closed doors.

Most importantly,

NSWRL has taken NRL to court
NRLPA had the public fall out

Neither has said the deal was bad, Nor has any club... all of whom get the NRL's books opened yearly.

So it is very hard for one person to help out a mate and do a poor deal, That is what I like about the ARLC setup. All stake holders get shown books and see meetings minutes as it is their money afterall

its irrelevant what ch9 did with the Saturday game. The fact is they would have paid nrl $185mill.
The deal only ended up $360mill. He should have been given chance to tear news ltd a new one as well.
I do agree they should have been made to show the Saturday night game though. Not having nrl on a Saturday night fta remains a dumb position for the game.
Why did Smith sign a deal that allowed Gyngel to sell the Saturday game back to Foxtel?

The only party that made extra money from the sale of the Saturday game and simulast rights was Ch9.

Gyngel played Smith like a fiddle and the game paid the price.

People would take your anti-V'landys rants more seriously if you acknowledged that Smith made a huge mistake and was out of his depth.

V'landys made a huge mistake. The difference is V'landys has delivered in other areas, such as expansion. Smith was as useless as soap to a Pommy when it came to expanding the game.

Regional ch10 ownership is a mess, Ownership is split up and the NSW/QLD/Vic owner will likely change hands.

No way a major code like RL goes with them until that is sorted, especially with how important Regional is to the sport

That is before you get into the Paramount plus side of it

A strong bid from Ch10/Paramount will force Ch9 to at least match their offer or risk losing the rights. Ch9 cannot afford to lose the NRL rights.

Plus nine got a further reduction because foxsports demanded the nine games be also streamed on their network

real figure from nine was around 80 million pa

gyngell took advantage of smiths inexperience

West Coast Sharks.

The strange part is, the Sharks win with this move but everyone talks like its thier death.
They go from 1 of the smallest geographical location and populations to the biggest- an entire state.
Sharks fans will still be Sharks fans( let's casual Sharks fans are 150k), it might disappoint the regular attendees ( 10 to 20k) but you'll get new one's .

All the risk for WA is removed .
You already have an active fan base tuning in, juniors, roster.. everything.

The Dragons move permanently to Wollongong- Southern Dragons.

Expansion... Expand!

Pure supposition.
FWIW the NRL have (as part of their investment strategy to have assets in times of economic downturns)purchased a brand new hotel right next door to Shark Park development. Revolving around accommodation. And guess who will utilise the accommodation during the winter months in particular? Visiting teams/management/fans.
The retail development next door due to open 1st week Feb ,the new leagues club completion mid to late 2024.Meaning ground capacity asa result will be increased ,due to restrictions now as a result of the development.
The Sharks in fact have now the 2nd biggliest (sic) junior league in Sydney. You think they will be involved if the club is relocated. The club fans showed they were crapped off playing games at Jubilee.
PVL has stated openly the game is tribal ,meaning established with a history, rest assured he ain't going to axe or relocate any Sydney club. With one proviso if a club was completely unsustainable.
Finally the Sharks in Sydney will attract a lot more Sydney Tv ratings ,than a Sharks domiciled in Perth will do in Sydney. And guess what Sydney is the biggest commercial market in Straya.
In view of the riots in PNG that has IMO put the hammer on them in the NRL for quite some time..On that basis the 18th team should be Perth.

Can't disagree with any of that, well done. But you could have scored 100% if you said nz2.
