Nrl. Clubs want additional funding to approve expansion of around 3 million extra per club pa

The clubs will always need their pieces of silver. Its shit but that's the way the commission is structured.

Its manufactured with priority picks and extra funding. More than half of AFL players are Victorian. SA/WA would be demolished by a VIC team. NSW/QLD would likewise be demolished by SA/WA. Its always been a Wizard of Oz expansion of the game.
I've said this multiple times, manufactured sports are just a scam, zero integrity... pass that flag around, people here want a draft, just coz they assume it needs work with a salary cap, this is not true, a draft is only nessesary when the rookies you need to spread throughout the game are only coming from one area (AFL in southern states, or NFL in United States) soccer, baseball, basketball, rugby, and most other sports don't need a draft, you can get players from anywhere and locally for that team if needed, while some of these sports have drafts unnecessarily, without really thinking it thru..
It's just a way to even out competitions, it just spreads talent, but that doesn't raise all boats the tide remains ever low.. rugby league has good teams, shìt teams, and godly teams, you can see the top4 right now and they are close to godliness, all other teams are striving to be that or like that, if there was a draft, they'd tank their mediocrity to gain that talent pick, but still be no better than the rest of the butt average teams... its farcical...
It needs to be survival of the fittest, or its not a comp worth watching

I’m guessing you don’t follow the MLB and NBA much MugaB. Look I get where you are coming from with the Panthers and all but seriously as a neutral fan or somebody who hasn’t got skin in a particular match here or there and who just wants to watch a contest, the competition can’t be strong in the long term if results are entirely predictable.

Also, I am not necessarily arguing for a draft but what I am arguing for is something in addition to the salary cap because the salary cap in isolation doesn’t work. It is proven to not work because the ARLC simply can’t police it (it’s not transparent). That’s not even taking in to account the other problems with having a system that essentially determines that every club is the same (which they’re not)

Yeh 50k fans, massive revenue and grand finals suggest expansion teams are a failure lol. Nrl could but dream.

MLB and NBA? I did say some have it, but unnecessarily, as for salary cap, the 3 best teams are using the salary cap in different ways, rosters use their location and undercut value thru their connections, Storm also have location, but are moreso isolated, so no limelight, and with that coach drives/attracts players there.. and Panthers replace top end talent with cheap rookies, even if you had a draft these teams will continue to do this, but only Sharks, Panthers and Tigers would suffer due to losing their up and coming talent to the likes of the Titans, or whoever is sinking in the end of the ladder, you cannot police, "location" or "star coach".
So then the draft solves nothing, and only stunts the clubs who develop talent, right now they get an edge from it to be competitive on stay relevant (if used right) I'd honestly say if we had a draft Canberra would suffer morso than they already do by losing their rookies that are basically keeping them relevant

23k TV viewers after 42 years and an ungodly $ figure per viewer, the game is a myth in NSW and QLD, the stadiums full of expats mask the reality.

I saw heaps more Sharks and Panthers gear getting around Brisbane yesterday than Lions gear, there was virtually zero AFL fanfare in the heavily populated southern suburbs that I get around.

Now do GWS…

Love it … the Sydney Swans have been around 40+ years but are still an “expansion team”…right… how many years does it take to shed that term exactly ?

At least they keep choking in the big one though lol

That is my concern with expansion.

People use Swans, Storm etc as reasons to why it works but ignoring the many, Many failures outside of that

They were all around South Brisbane pubs. Pineapple, Story Bridge, Morrison, Norman, Clarence, Plough etc.

Further you got south, fewer Lions fans there were.

Yes… successful expansion should never be taken for granted … I think there is a lot of difference between the first team and the second team though into a non heartland area..

The AFL have bitten off more than they can chew with GWS … they have poured a lot into this money pit already with terrible results thus far for what has been a relatively successful team on the field .. compared with say the Suns or Titans

People above mentioned a draft being needed. I think it will hurt in these cases, Perth in particular want locals.

The RL setup allows them to develop and keep as much WA locals as they want. A draft sees guys moved on to other clubs.

That will help get community buy in for the long term health of the side

A draft will never work in RL… it’s already been proven to be a restraint of trade legally, and unlike the AFL, RL kids have other options playing Union either here or overseas, and I suspect it wouldn’t take more than a year for it to be challenged again …

in Respect of Perth NRL…they will get reasonable crowds …getting them to watch it on TV and producing juniors will be the main issues ..and we are talking a decades long battle..just like it’s been with the Storm and they aren’t all the way there yet ..

Why do we need a draft? We've been told multiple times that png will provide hundreds of nrl quality players within 5 years. Not to mention those great nrl ready players from WA, the Norf sho and the Central Coast.
