Geography means it’ll be one or the other, CHCH seems well ahead at the moment but if they gave Wellington a couple of token games a year I wouldn’t complain and would be more likely to support them over a solely CHCH team
I think there were four or five nz bids

3 chch
One was wellingon / chch

I think the last was Auckland 2 but that’s just a guess

There was two Chchurch bids confirmed and one rumoured. Never heard any rumour and certainly no public statement there was more than that.

PNG
WA
Fiji
Easts
Jets
SthI1
SthI2

SthI3 rumoured

9th is unknown.

4 were rumoured in nz , 3 south Island and 1 Wellington. Actually there might have been 1 in Auckland too, so might be 5. How many were submitted though I don't know.
So far only 1 Perth bid that's been ruled out...

Not sure, it is a shame however. Has a decent population and a big League following. The stadium is the biggest let down and being an art city very limited geographically- constrained by hills and ocean, hard to see that changing.
Maybe some space for a facility in the lower hurt?
Cool city though, if you get a chance check it out! Seal colony walk on a beach not far from the city- just a really pretty place!

Phoenix (a-league) we’re looking at a rectangular stadium for a while in Petone but nothing seemed to come from that.
Wellington gets talked up as a bit of an ‘Arts City’ but that’s only really the inner suburbs which is also mainly Gov/financial office workers along with students. Hutt Valley is more family friendly with Wainui having a strong league history and on the other side Porirua and surrounds certainly have more of a league appetite.
Also a potential better player pool to pull from in the satellite provinces (Taranaki/Manawatu/Hawkes bay/ Wairarapa) than CHch if they could get better systems up and running there

I was surprised Chalmers didn't resurrect the Wellington bid, he was super keen for many years. Wellington seemingly went in with the Sth Is bid and gave them their backing.

One of the things that's never spoken about is the amount of effort , money and emotion that goes into a bid. There's been plenty of solid bids from Brisbane, Central Coast, Wellington and Perth but to name a few. They put all this time, effort, money, heart and soul into something that ultimately gets rejected.. that was the Wellington story I believe, really hard to come back from that with not only the same enthusiasm but more. Very much part of the Perth story is that the NRL don't want it buried for good which is great!
My point is, I'm not surprised.
You put everything into something you have, it doesn't work..that's it.
We all like a rocky story but that's because it's the exception, not the rule.

Yep totally understand that.
Cumins was super reluctant to step up again having been burnt badly before in 2012. He probably should have listened to his gut and not wasted his time and money!
